Scots drop 1-0 decision in final two seconds at McMurry

ABILENE, Tex. – The Lyon College Scots lost a 1-0 match at McMurry on Friday night in the official season-opener for both teams.

The Scots (0-1) held McMurry scoreless until the final two seconds of the match when a War Hawk got the only goal of the game. Lyon College had 12 shots at the goal and five of those were on-goal attempts. Mathes Nunes had two shots on goal, Lucca Torres had one shot, Nate Peterson had three shots that included an on-goal, Erik Oliveira had four shots and two of them were on-goal, while Tomas Biasi and Joao Barros each had one shot at the goal.

Goalie Adryan Ledezma had five saves for the Scots in the net area and played the entire 90 minutes. Lucas Crivilattie played 90 minutes as a starter, Biasi got in 83 minutes, Peterson was in for 81 minutes, Flilipe Santana de Oliveira played for 74 minutes, and Fabian Martinez was in the match for 73 minutes.

Other starters included Tomas Garzon, Micah Rangel, and Gustavo Giesbrecht. The Scots substitutes were Diego Roter dos Santos, Nunes, Traviss Ragan, Inaki Terra, Tiago Donadon, Ariel Reyes, Luca Cirigliano, Torres, and Cristian De La Rosa.

Lyon College men’s soccer ties Howard Payne 1-1

BROWNWOOD, Tex. – The Lyon College Scots men’s soccer batted to a 1-1 tie with Howard Payne University on Saturday night in Brownwood, Tex.

The Scots (0-1-1) fell behind in the first seven and a half minutes on a first-half penalty kick, 1-0. However, in the second half, Joao Barros kicked in a low-scoring goal on a penalty kick at the 76:10 mark of the second half to tie the match 1-1.

Lyon College had eight shots and half of those were on-goal attempts. Those shots came from Erik Oliveira, Filipe Santana de Oliveira, Mathes Nunes, and Barros were all on-goal with Barros getting the tying shot. Lucas Crivilatti was in the game for 89 minutes playing strong defense in the backfield with Tomas Garzon and midfielders Micah Rangel and Nate Peterson. Thomas Biasi was on defense for 81 minutes and stopped attempts from Howard Payne to score. Josh Eckhart played the entire game and stopped both shots on goal.

Substitutes, Taylor Prater, Diego Roter dos Santos, Ryan Jenkins, Gustavo Giesbrecht, Traviss Ragan, Inaki Terra, Tiago Donadon, Ariel Reyes, Luca Cirigliano, and Lucca Torres all played important respective roles in the tie.

The Scots will be at Hendrix College on Friday, Sept. 6 and play their first home game of the season on Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. against Ouachita Baptist University.

Scots women’s soccer defeated 7-0 at McMurry

ABILENE, Tex. – The Lyon College women’s soccer team lost a 7-0 decision at McMurry on Friday night in the season-opening game.
The Scots (0-1) trailed 3-0 at halftime. Jessica Steele had two shots that included one on-goal shot. And that was most all of the offensive attack by Lyon College in the contest.

Zoe Papazoglou and Katelyn Balderas, both captains for the Scots, played 81 minutes each. Steele put in 80 minutes, while Allison Byars played 74 minutes, and Lauren Couture was on the turf field for 71 minutes. Other starters included goalkeeper Bethanny Moore, Mackenzie Moody, Millie Beller, Emily Betzold, Emilee Simpson, and Alexis Whitley.

Subbing in for the Scots were Jessie Stauffer at goal-keeper, Deaiveon Carter, Destinee Flowers, Maggie McCollum, Emma Rumore, Hanna Klara Birgisdotti, Natalie Wyatt, Mikayla Neveloff, and Nataly Furne.

Stauffer and Moore both had seven saves at goalie in the match.

Lyon College women’s soccer loses 8-0 at Howard Payne

BROWNWOOD, Tex. – The Lyon College Scots women’s soccer team did not score in an 8-0 loss at Howard Payne on Saturday afternoon.

Lyon (0-2) had only four shots for the entire match, and just one was an on-goal attempt. Katelyn Balderas had three shots at the goal and one goal, and Millie Beller from Cave City, Ark., had a shot at the goal. Sydney Wolf made four saves, and Bethany Moore had two saves at goalie.

Jessica Steele played 58 minutes, Zone Papazolou played 70 minutes, and Lauren Couture played 76 minutes. Hanna Klara Birgisdottir played 47 minutes, Natalie Wyatt had 24 minutes in the contest, Beller played for 54 minutes, and Balderas did not come off the field for the entire 90 minutes. Emily Betzold played 53 minutes, Emilee Simpson was on the field for 64 minutes, Wolf played goalie for 76 minutes, and Allison Byars put in 65 minutes.

The substitutes, Jessie Stauffer came to relieve Wolf and played 30 minutes, Moore also came in at goalie and played 14 minutes, Alexis Whitley limped off the field after playing 65 minutes, Nataly Furne had 36 minutes, Mikayla Neveloff played 25 minutes, Emma Rumore played 34 minutes, Maggie McCollum was in for 49 minutes, Makenzie Moody was in for 40 minutes, Deaiveon Carter played 18 minutes and Angela Penaflor got in for one minute.

The Scots will be at home on Thursday, Sept. 5 to face Randall University.

Scots volleyball defeats Belhaven, loses to Rhodes in tournament

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Lyon College women’s volleyball team traveled to Memphis for the Rhodes College Opening Weekend Tournament.

The Scots played a doubleheader at Mallory Gymnasium in Memphis on Saturday against Belhaven University from Jackson, Miss.

The Scots swept Belhaven in three sets, winning 25-14, 25-20, and 25-21.

Statistical leaders for Lyon College in the Belhaven match included Kylee Sabella (nine kills), Caroline Snow (13 assists), Mikhayla Wright (three blocks), and Cristen Cleveland (six digs, four aces).
In the Rhodes College match, the Scots took the Lynx to four sets, winning only the third set (23-25, 12-25, 25-17 and 26-24).

Statistical leaders for the Scots in the Rhodes match included Caroline Snow (20 assists) Samantha Ferguson (two blocks), Cristen Cleveland (two aces), and Kylee Sabella (14 kills, 11 digs).

The Lyon College women’s volleyball team will return to action next weekend for the First Tatum Cunningham Invitational. The tournament will be played next Friday, Sept. 6 and Saturday, Sept. 7 at Becknell Gymnasium.

Lyon College cross country teams run at Memphis Twilight

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Lyon College men’s cross country team was led by Gavin Bush on Saturday night at the Memphis Twilight four-mile race.

Bush finished 118th in a time of 27:17.43. Daniel Thomas was second for Lyon College with a time of 27:23.61 for 119th place.
Ethan Byler led a five-pack of Scots by running 124th in a time of 28:38.10, Jakobe Alcorn was 125th in a time of 28:53.85; Andrew Hernandez was 126th in a time of 28:57.29; Noah Cordes ran 127th in a time of 28:59.09 and Timothy Brady ran 128th in a time of 29:17.12.

Sean Hall was 132nd in a time of 33:20.52 and Chance Wheeler ran 134 in a time of 35:10.20.

The Lyon College women’s cross country team ran at the Memphis Twilight race on Saturday night, led by Brianna Krantz.

Krantz ran 81st in the 5K in a time of 22:21.90 and Madison DeRoussel was 85th in a time of 22:41.04, then a three-pack of Scots came in with Kacie Teruya at 101st in a time of 25;28.62, Alora Huver was 102nd in a time of 26:41.97 and Novalee Lackey was 103rd in a time of 27:00.78.
