Officers from the Batesville Police Department (BPD) and others participated in a grueling physical event on Friday to memorialize those who died in the 9/11 attacks.

The memorial ruck challenge started at 6 a.m. to honor the nearly 3,000 people, including Batesville’s Sara Low, who died in the tragic terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Rucking is walking with a weighted backpack — males carrying 30-pound packs and females carrying 20-pound packs.

Participants in the challenge, which started at the Batesville Police Department, walked up the old river amphitheater steps 110 times (to represent the 110 stories of the World Trade Center towers) and then tackled a four-mile walk through town and back to the BPD.

On its Facebook page, the BPD said completing the event was “worth the pain to commemorate those who we lost on that tragic day.”
