Obituary for John Mark Gillihan – written by Dallas Gillihan, in loving tribute to his father.

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of John Mark “Spanky” Gillihan, a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend, who left us on September 12, 2024. Born on May 6th, 1970, in Batesville, Arkansas, Mark lived a life rich with love, laughter, and a deep appreciation for animals and the great outdoors.

A life of passion and peace

Mark was a true outdoorsman at heart. From an early age, he developed a connection with nature, spending countless hours hunting in the Arkansas hills and fishing on the lakes and rivers. He shared his love for the outdoors with his children, brothers, and friends. It was a quiet, simple way of life he cherished.

A loving family man

Above all, Mark was a devoted family man. He took great pride and honor in being a father to Dallas, Destiny, and Matt; a husband to Kyla; and a grandfather to Denver Mae. He loved his dogs River, Bandit, Tails, and Little Ann. His gentle spirit and support created an environment where love flourished. He taught his children the importance of hard work, honesty, and respect for nature; instilling in them the values he held dear.

A caring friend

Mark was known for his humbleness, kindness, and accountability, Mark was a man you could count on. Mark ran the Batesville Custom Paint Store, a “make sure it is done right” business he took pride in. Mark wasn’t a very talkative person, but his ability to listen would make people feel valued and heard. Whether it was lending someone a helping hand, or reminiscing on old stories with friends, he brought warmth to those around him. His honest and generous spirit will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A legacy of love

As we remember Mark, we celebrate a life well-lived. One filled with adventure, love, and compassion. He leaves behind a legacy that will last through cherished memories of family, fishing trips, hunting excursions, and ranch sorting trips with his daughter. His spirit will remain forever in our hearts.

Celebration of life

Services are entrusted to Willis Funeral Service of Batesville, AR. A celebration of Mark’s life will be held on Monday, September 16, 2024. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., with the funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church in Cave City, AR. Family and friends are invited to share their memories and honor a great man. A private family burial will take place at a later time.

Rest in peace, Mark. Your love and spirit will forever guide us as we navigate the waters of life without you.
