Scots football loses 48-6 at McMurry in SCAC opener
ABILENE, Tex. – The Lyon College football Scots entered their first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game against the McMurry War Hawks and lost 48-6.
The Scots (1-1, 0-1) gave an interception for a 32-yard touchdown on three plays into the contest.
Trailing 8-0, Lyon quarterback Joe Galay ran the ball in for a 5-yard touchdown, but the try for two points failed, leaving the score 8-6.
Mason Davis and Will Litton combined to sack the McMurry quarterback and force a 4th-and-20 punting situation. Later, Zach Morange broke up a long pass attempt by the War Hawks and the first quarter ended with the Scots down by two points.
In the second quarter, Lyon had the ball at the McMurry 1-yard line, and Jesus Romero-Castillo’s field goal attempt was blocked. Soon after, McMurry scored on its own field goal from 29 yards to make it 11-6.
The Scots fumbled the ball away on the next series, and McMurry capitalized with a touchdown to make it 18-6.
Lyon College threw another interception, which was returned 45 yards for a War Hawk touchdown, extending their lead to 25-6 by halftime.
McMurry took the second-half opening kickoff and drove in for a touchdown to up its score to 32-6. Then, a 17-yard Lyon College punt resulted in another War Hawk touchdown to make it 39-6 in the third quarter. Then a 23-yard Scots punt ended up with McMurry kicking a 36-yard field goal to go up 42-6
McMurry added another touchdown midway through the fourth quarter that was highlighted by Michael Woods Caw blocking the extra point, but the Scots trailed 48-6 at that point.
The Scots used four quarterbacks in the game, Joe Galay, Noah Paez, Grayson Johnson and Bryton Usery.
Lyon College will host its home-opener against Howard Payne University on Saturday, September 21 at 6 p.m. at Batesville High School.
Lyon College women’s soccer battles Central Baptist College to 0-0 tie
BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College women’s soccer Scots battled the Central Baptist College Mustangs to a 0-0 tie on Saturday morning.
The Scots (1-3-1) had 12 shots at the goal and two on-goal kicks, but none could find the net. Defensively, Allison Byars was instrumental in the shutout, and goalie Jessie Stauffer made two saves on the only two attempts the Mustangs took.
Individually, Jessica Steele had two shots, Millie Beller took two shots at the goal, Nataly Furne and Alexis Whitley had one shot each, and Zoe Papazoglou, Emma Rumore, Katelyn Balderas, and Allison Byars all had one shot each. Beller and Byars had the two on-goal attempts, and both were saved.
Angela Penaflor, Deaiveon Carter, Mackenzie Moody, Hanna Klara Birgisdottir, Natalie Wyatt, and Mikayla Neveloff all had roles in the match.
From the 9:47 mark of the first half to the 26:12 mark, Furne had a shot go wide, Beller’s shot was saved at the bottom left of the goal, Whitley’s went out left, Balderas shot was just wide right, Beller took another attempt, Steele’s shot was left of the goal, and Rumore was also left on her attempt. Steele had one later attempt that was off the top bar of the goal.
Byars shot ame at the 50:36 mark of the second half and was saved at the bottom left of the goal. Papazoglou had a shot go just high of the goal in the 78th minute, and the match ended without a score from either team.
Scots men’s cross country runs seventh in Steve Guymon Invitational
SEARCY, Ark. – The Lyon College Men’s Cross Country team ran seventh of nine teams in the four-mile Steve Guymon Invitational at Harding University on Friday afternoon.
The Scots had 180 total points for the run.
Leading the way for the Scots was James McNew, who was 44th in a time of 23:37.6. He was followed by Gavin Bush, who ran 47th in a time of 24:00.2. Other Scots included, Noah Cordes at 57th in a time of 26:13. 4, Jakobe Alcorn ran 58th in a time of 26:34.8, Timothy Brady ran 59th in a time of 26:37.4, Daniel Thomas was 61st in a time of 26:44.3, Ethan Byler was 62nd in a time of 27:16.0, Andrew Hernandez was 63rd in a time of 27:41.6, Zach Harvey ran 64th in a time of 27:44.0 and Sean Hall was 75th in a time of 31:22.6.
There were 78 runners in the men’s portion of the meet.
Scots upend University of Dallas
BATESVILLE, Ark. – Gustao Giesbrecht scored the match’s only goal at the 17:26 mark of the first half as the Lyon College Scots men’s soccer team defeated the University of Dallas Crusaders 1-0 on Friday evening on the Lyon College turf field.
The weather changed the venue of the game from the grass surface at Huser Field to the football turf field on the other side of the campus on Friday. The change made for fast and wet conditions and the Scots (2-1-2) got off eight shots, three of which were on-goal attempts.
Erik Oliveria had a shot, as did Joao Barros and Giesbrecht, who netted his only attempt. Filipe Santana de Oliveria had a shot on goal, and Cristian De La Rosa had three shots, one of which just went over the top of the goal post.
Lyon College goalie had two saves in the game on three shots by the Crusaders.
Scots tie Ouachita Baptist University
BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College Scots men’s soccer team got a goal from Micah Rangel in the 70th minute on an assist from Erik Oliveria to take a 1-0 lead, but the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers came back to score in the 71st minute to tie the match, which ended in a 1-1 tie on Wednesday afternoon at Huser Field.
The Scots (1-1-2) had 14 shots in the match, four of which were on-goal opportunities to the Tigers’ five total shots.
Goalie for the Scots, Gabriel Rangel had two saves on the day and played the entire 90 minutes. Micah Rangel had two shots on goal and put the last one in for a score. Oliveria had four shots,one of which was on-goal and Mathes Nunes had two on-goal shots. Lucca Torres had a shot in the match, as did Filipe Santan de Oliveria and Tiago Donadon had two shots.
The first half was scoreless.
