Eagle Mountain Elementary students will have another day off on Tuesday as crews continue cleaning up after an overnight fire gutted one classroom and caused water damage to another.
According to Batesville School Superintendent Dr. Ken James, a milk delivery worker reported the fire after noticing smoke from a classroom window around 1:30 a.m. Monday.
The school district said the fire was contained to one classroom due to the quick response from the Batesville Fire Department. However, damage and safety concerns prompted administrators to cancel classes on Monday as a precaution. James confirmed on Monday afternoon that Eagle Mountain Elementary will also not have classes on Tuesday. All Eagle Mountain staff will report to the district office on Tuesday at 8 a.m.
James said Metro Disaster Specialists are on-site and working to clean and disinfect all affected areas. He said the district hopes to resume classes on Wednesday morning.
