Scots men’s soccer knocks off Blue Jays 3-1 in Fulton, Mo.

FULTON, Mo. – The Lyon College Scots men’s soccer team stayed atop the SLIAC standings with a 3-1 win over the host Westminster College Blue on Thursday night.

The Scots improved to 6-5-2 overall and are now 4-1 in the SLIAC standings.

Lucas Crivilatti had two goals, both of which were assisted by Matheus Nunes. Erik Oliveira had the other goal for Lyon College and was assisted by Lucca Torres.

All three of the Scots goals came after Westminster took a 1-0 lead in the second half. Lyon College is riding a three-match winning streak.

Crivilatti scored in the 63rd and 76th minutes, and Oliveira scored in the 80th minute. Lyon College had 18 shots in the game, eight of which were on-goal attempts.

Scots goalie Gabriel Rangel had six saves in the match. Crivilatti had two shots on-goal and both of them scored, Tomas Garzon had a shot, Oliveira had three on-goal shots and one scored. Nunes had three shots and two assists, Gustavo Giesbrecht had one on-goal shot, Joao Barros had three shots at the goal, Nate Peterson took one shot, Tiago Donadon had two on-goal kicks and Luca Cirigliano had two shots in the match.

The Scots are on the road in SLIAC action on Saturday at Webster.

Westminster defeats Lyon women’s soccer 1-0

FULTON, Mo. – The Lyon College women’s soccer Scots battled in a scoreless game until the final seconds of the first half when Westminster scored a goal and went on to take the SLIAC match 1-0 on Thursday afternoon at Kent & Judith Mueller Stadium in Fulton, Mo.

For the Scots (3-6-2, 2-1-1), it was their first conference loss.

Jessica Steele had a shot in the second half that was saved by the Westminster goalie. Then Emma Rumore took a shot on goal, and Nataly Furne had a shot on goal in the second half. Bethanny Moore and Jessie Stauffer had a combined nine saves at goalie for Lyon College.

Scots men’s golf wins second straight USCAA National Championship

STATE COLLEGE, Penn. – The Lyon College Scots men’s golf team has captured its second straight United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Championship on Tuesday at the Penn State Blue Course in State College, Penn.

The Scots shot a 298 in the first round on Monday to take a 14-stroke lead over second place. On Tuesday, they shot a 305 for a 603 total, which was 15 strokes better than second-place Johnson & Wales Charlotte.

It was the second straight year that Lyon College golf finished as USCAA National Champions.

For the final round, Brooks Vangilder finished with a six-over 78 and had a birdie on the first hole and the ninth hole. He parred two, three, five, eight, 10, and 13 through 17.

Ryan Kriz finished with a nine-over 81 and had pars on one, three, five, six, eight, nine, 12, 15 and 17. He birdied hole 16.

John Blake Turner shot a six-over 78 in round two with a birdie on hole 12. He parred holes 1 through 6 for even par, then parred nine, 11, 14 and 15 and 18.

Michael Winne had two birdies, one on hole six and one on hole nine, then parred five, seven and eight on the front nine, and parred 10 through 13, 15 and 16 and 18 to finish with a five-over 77.

The Scots golfer of the day was Manav Perfecto, who finished at an even-par 72 for the second round to lead Lyon College. Perfecto had six birdies that included starting off with a hole one, then he sank hole five and hole nine. On the back side he sank birdies at hole 12, 14 and 15. Perfecto parred hole two, four, six and seven, then parred 10, 11 and 13 on the backside.

Lyon College swept a field of 20 other teams to win its second championship.

Scots men’s golf leading USCAA National Championship match by 14 strokes

STATE COLLEGE, Penn. – The Lyon College Scots men’s golf team led the 2024 USCAA Men’s Golf National Championship by 14 strokes over second place after round one at the Penn State Blue par-72 Blue Course on Monday, Oct. 14.

After the first day, the Scots were 10 over par and led the Apprentice School by 14 strokes and Penn State Mont Alto by 18.

Individually, John Blake Turner of Lyon College was in second place overall after shooting an even par-72. He birdied hole seven, 16 and 18 and had pars on holes one, two, five, six, eight, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 17.

Brooks Vangilder was tied for third place with a two-over 74 in the first round. Vangilder had birdies on one, nine and 12, while parring six, eight, 10, 11, 13, 14, 17 and 18.

Ryan Kriz was tied for fifth overall with a 3-over 75 after the first round. Kriz had birdies on holes 10 and 16, while parring all but one of his first nine holes. On the back nine, Kriz parred 13, 14, 15, and 18.

Michael Winne was tied for ninth place overall with a 5-over 77. Winne birdied hole number one, hole 12, 15 and 16. He parred two, six, eight, nine, 10, 14 and 17.

Manav Perfecto was in a tie for 24th overall with a nine-over 81 in the first round. Perfecto birdied holes nine and 14, while parring one, six, seven, 10, 12, 13, 15 and 17.

There were 99 individual golfers in the tournament.

Scots fall to Austin College 35-17

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College Scots (1-5, 0-4) dropped a 35-17 decision to Austin College on Saturday, Oct. 12, during SCAC football action at Pioneer Stadium in Batesville.

It was Austin College’s first win of the season (1-5, 1-3).

Austin College led 7-0 after the first quarter, but Jesus Romero-Castillo kicked a 29-yard field goal for the Scots to make it 7-3 with 9:46 left in the first quarter.

Austin College scored on a 75-yard run to make it a 14-3 game 30 seconds later.

Lyon College returned with an 18-play, 66-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown run from Jaylin Babers with 50 seconds to go in the first half to make it 14-10.

Austin College started the second half with a 71-yard touchdown run to go up 21-10 in the first 30 seconds of the third quarter. Lyon fought back and got an 11-yard touchdown catch from Reginald Brown II from quarterback Grayson Johnson at the 4:33 mark of the third period to make it a 21-17 game.

Austin College scored with 2:04 left in the third on a 6-yard run to go up 28-17 and added another 71-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to account for the final score.

Individually for the Scots, Johnson was 29-of-42 passing for 228 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Babers ran 22 times for 79 yards and had a touchdown. Brown caught eight passes for 64 yards and had a touchdown. Javarion WIlliams had five catches for 53 yards, Babers had four catches for 50 yards, Cedric Allen had six catches for 38 yards and Aedan Huntsman had five catches for 18 yards.

The Scots were led defensively by Mason Davis, Caleb Clark, Will Litton, Michael Wingo and Rene Dominque with five tackles each.

Scots women’s soccer defeats Blackburn 6-0 in SLIAC match

BATESVILLE, Ark.—Katelyn Baldaras had two goals, Deaiveon Carter scored her first goal as a Scot this season, and Hanna Birgisdottir, Jessica Steele, and Millie Beller all scored in the Lyon College women’s soccer team’s 6-0 win over the Blackburn College Beavers in SLIAC action on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Huser Field in Batesville.

The Scots (3-5-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the SLIAC) scored a goal from Balderas, assisted by Mackenzie Moody, in the 14th minute of the game. Balderas scored again in the 24th minute, and Carter put in her goal, assisted by Angela Penaflor, later in the 24th minute. Lyon led 3-0 at halftime of Senior Day.

In the second period, Birgisdottir scored in the 58th minute on an assist by Emma Rumore, Steele scored in the 82nd minute, and Beller added her second goal of the season in the 83rd minute.

Sydney Wolf was goalie for the Scots and didn’t have much action, but did preserve the shutout victory. Carter had four shots, three were on-goal and one of those was netted. Moody had one shot, Birgisdottir had three shots and one of those was a goal, Natalie Wyatt had three shots with one of those being on-goal, Balderas had three shots and scored two of those, Allison Byars had two shots on-goal, Penaflor had one shot on-goal, Steele had two shots on-goal and one score, Beller had one shot and one goal, and Nataly Furne had seven shots, five of which were on-goal.

Scots men’s soccer defeats Blackburn 2-1

BATESVILLE, Ark. – Tiago Donadon got his second goal of the match in the 51st minute to lead the Lyon College Scots to a 2-1 win over the Blackburn College Beavers in SLIAC soccer action at Huser Field in Batesville on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Donadon got his first goal at the 40:26 mark of the first half to break a scoreless tie and it was off an assist by Erik Oliveira.
Blackburn came back to tie the game in the final seconds of the first half. Then, a barrage of goal kicks from the Scots resulted in Donadon’s second goal, which Matheus Nunes assisted.

The Scots improved to 5-5-2 on the season and 3-1 in the SLIAC.

Oliveira had one shot on goal of his three shots, Gustavo Giesbrecht had two shots on goal of his three shots, Taylor Prater had one shot on goal, and Donadon had six shots, two of them on goal, and both were netted.

Adryan Ledezma played goalie for the Scots and had three saves in the match.

Scots volleyball splits doubleheader at Eureka tri-match

EUREKA, Ill. — Lyon College volleyball split their two matches at the SLIAC tri-match at Eureka College on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The Scots (12-6, 4-4) played their first match against Eureka (3-9, 3-5) at 10:00 AM on Saturday. The match resulted in a 3-0 victory for Lyon College, as the Scots took it in straight sets by final scores of 25-17, 27-25, and 25-22.

Statistical leaders for the Scots in the Eureka match included Kylee Sabella, who led the Scots in total kills (14), digs (13) and blocks (1). Madeline Hopson and Caroline Snow led the way in assists, with both players garnering 16 each. Samantha Ferguson led the way with two aces while also picking up a team-second-best 10 kills in the Scots’ victory over the Red Devils.

Immediately following the Eureka match, the Scots turned around to take on Westminster College (11-13, 5-1) at noon. This match saw the Scots fall to the Blue Jays in four sets, by final scores of 20-25, 25-19, 23-25, and 20-25.

Statistical leaders for the Scots in the Westminster match included Hopson again leading the way with a remarkable 26 assists, while Olivia Locke led in total aces, picking up three. Sabella once again led in three statistical categories, including total kills (13) with Mollie McCoy not far behind in that category (11). Sabella also led in total digs (15) and tied with Ferguson in total blocks (5).
