West scores 25 points, hauls in 14 rebounds to lead Scots past Hendrix 86-73

BATESVILLE, Ark. – Newcomer, junior forward Colbie West of Bradley, proved his worth on Thursday, Nov. 14, by scoring a team-high 25 points and hauling down 14 rebounds to lead the Lyon College Scots to a hard-fought 86-73 victory over the visiting Hendrix Warriors at Becknell Gymnasium.

The Scots (2-0) also got 18 points from Cave City’s Trenton Bell, who hit 6-of-13 three-pointers on the night. Sacramento, California native senior Malik Madison scored 15 points and added three more blocked shots to his season total. Kylon McCullough of North Little Rock put in 14 points, while Long Island, New York’s Frank Toney put in seven points, six assists, six rebounds and four steals in the win by Lyon College.

The Scots ran out to a 19-point lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, 27-8, thanks to West, McCullough, Madison, Toney and Bell. McCullough’s three-pointer at the three minute mark kept the Lyon College lead at 19 points, 41-22.

Lyon led 41-27 at halftime.

Early in the second half, Hendrix cut the Scots lead to nine points, 41-32, but three dunks from Madison, a basket from West, then three-pointers from Bell and McCullough raised the lead to 26, 60-34 with 15:05 left in the game.

West continued to score inside and Kennedy Warren put in a basket, then Luke Bridges came in and got two free throws for a 69-47 lead with 9:32 to go.

Hendrix picked at the lead until it was 69-60 and made it nine points again with 5:10 to go, 72-63, despite Toney popping a three-pointer from the wing. Bell hit a three-pointer, West scored two more baskets and Madison put in two free throws to make a 16-point Scots lead with 3:08 left.

West hit another shot inside, Madison added another free throw and Bell kept the Lyon College lead in double-digits with his sixth three-pointer with 36 seconds to go to make it 86-73.

The Scots scored 38 points in the paint, had 19 points off of turnovers, 18 second-chance points, 32 points on fast-breaks and got seven points from its bench.

Lyon College was 33-of-71 from the field, made 11-of-32 three-pointers, hit 9-of-13 free throws, had 45 rebounds, 21 assists and nine steals as a team.

Scots drop 31-21 decision at Austin College in football finale

SHERMAN, Texas – The Lyon College Scots ended their 2024 football season, their first in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, with a 31-21 loss at Austin College on Saturday, Nov. 16. The Scots (1-9, 0-8) took the early lead on a 7-yard touchdown run from Bryton Usrey. With the extra-point kick from Jesus Romero-Castillo, Lyon College led 7-0 with 11:51 to play in the second quarter.

Austin College tied the game at the 8:32 mark of the second quarter and that score stood at halftime.

The Scots fell behind 24-7 early in the fourth quarter, but Jaylin Babers capped off an 11-play 75-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown. Romero-Castillo added the PAT to cut the score to 24-14 with 7:46 to play in the game.

Austin College scored again on a 39-yard touchdown run, but the Scots fought back when Javarion Williams caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Usrey to make it 31-21 with 3:34 to go.

For the game, Usrey was 21-of-39 passing for 171 yards and threw one touchdown and had one interception. Babers rushed 30 times for 147 yards and scored a touchdown. Williams led the Scots receivers with six catches for 53 yards and a touchdown.

Austin College gets by Scots’ at Becknell 82-74

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Austin College Kangaroos took a late 10 point lead and held on to defeat the Lyon College Scots 82-74 at Becknell Gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 16.

The Scots (2-1) trailed by one point at halftime 39-38.

Kylon McCullough led Lyon College with 17 points, Israel Palmer had 13 points, Malik Madison had 11 point, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots, and Frank Toney rounded out the Scots double-digit scoring with 11 points and five assists.

Colbie West scored nine points and had eight rebounds, Trent Bell scored five points, Jaaron Harriott had three points, while John Paul Morgan and Kennedy Warren both scored two points each.

The score was tied 11 times and there were seven lead changes, most of which came in the first half.

Toney started the game with a layup off the opening tip that was won by Madison. Later, West completed a three-point play to tie the game at 10-10, then Toney tied the game at 12-12 and Morgan scored inside for a Scots lead. Madison put in a basket made a steal and Palmer made one of two free throws to make it 17-12 with 10:08 left in the first half.

McCullough hit a three-pointer to break a 17-17 tie and put Lyon College back in front, then Palmer scored on a jumper to make it 22-19. McCullough hit another three for the Scots, but Austin College answered to make it a one-point game 25-24. Harriott’s tip-in with 5:51 to go in the half put Lyon College back in front 27-26. Bell tied the game at 29-29 at the free throw line and McCullough broke free on a fast-break for a dunk to tie the game at 31-31.

Toney hit a jumper, Bell made a three-pointer and Kennedy Warren put in a jump shot in the final seconds of the half to get the Scots to within one point.

West knocked down a three-pointer to start the scoring in the second half and put Lyon College up by two points, 41-39 and Madison added two free throws. Austin College came back to tie the game, but McCullough hit a jumper for the Scots. Madison made a jumper in the paint, but Austin College tied the game at 47-47 with 14:26 to go.

Toney scored and McCullough made another three-pointer, but Austin College ame back to tie the game at 52-52 with 11:20 left. A dunk from Madison got the Scots to within one point, but the Kangaroos opened up a six point lead, 60-54 until Harriott made a free throw.

Austin College led by nine points, 64-55 when Madison made two more free throws. West made one of two free throws and Palmer scored on a driving layup to cut the score to 68-60 with 6:29 left.

McCullough and Palmer both made one of two free throws, but Austin College maintained an eight-point lead with 1:40 left to play, 77-69. Palmer made a layup and completed a three-point play, but it was too little too late as the Kangaroos added two free throws in the final 13 seconds to maintain their eight-point lead.

Taylor scores 34, Kaza puts in 32 as Scots rout Austin College 106-85

BATESVILLE, Ark. – Samantha Taylor scored 34 points and dished out 11 assists to go with six steals, and Natalya Kaza scored 32 points on 12-of-19 field goals to lead the Lyon College Scots women’s basketball team to a 106-85 win over the visiting Austin College Kangaroos on Saturday, Nov. 16, at Becknell Gymnasium.

The Scots (3-0) also got a double-double from Savanna Lopez, who had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Dalye Hambelton had 10 points, as well, and hit three three-pointers. Molly Mason scored six points and had nine rebounds, Haven Cooper had four points and five boards, while Savannah Stout and Mia Winston both three-points apiece, Alexis Shelton added a basket, and Izabel Soto and Chasity Taylor scored one point each at the free throw line in the victory.

Lyon College scored 40 points in the paint, had 28 points off of Kangaroo turnovers, hit 16 second-chance points off the offensive glass, made 30 points on fast-breaks and got 14 points from bench players.

The score was tied one time and there were two lead changes early in the first quarter.

The Scot led 28-18 after the first period and built that to a 51-38 halftime lead. Lyon College outscored Austin College 28-24 in the third quarter and 27-23 in the final stanza to score over 100 points for the second time in three games.

In the annual Toy Toss contest, Taylor scored the first points on a layup just six seconds into the game and toys came flying on the court. Austin College came back after the stoppage of play to score four straight points, but Kaza made her first of six three-pointers on the night.

Lopez scored inside and Taylor made one of two free throws, then a layup for a 16-8 lead for Lyon College. Kaza put in a layup, but Austin College closed the gap to four points with two quick scores, but Taylor made another free throw and Shelton scored inside. Kaza made a layup and hit another three-pointer and Taylor scored to make it 28-18.

Mason scored to start the second period, Hambelton made a three-pointer and Lopez put in a short jumper to give the Scots a 37-18 lead with 7:02 left before halftime.

Kaza made a layup for a 20-point Lyon College advantage and Mason kept the Scots lead at 20 with another basket. Kaza hit her third three-pointer for a 44-23 lead with 4:23 to go in the second period and a three-pointer from Stout gave Lyon College its largest lead at 22 points with 3:57 left.

Kaza made her fourth three-pointer and Taylor added a free throw before halftime for the Scots.

Taylor made four free throws in a row and Hambelton added two from the line before Taylor scored on a layup for a 59-42 lead at the eight minute mark of the third quarter. Taylor put in two more free throws, Mason scored and Kaza got a layup to fall for a 65-42 Lyon College lead with 6:46 to go in the third period.

Kaza’s fifth three-pointer came a minute later and Taylor put in two more free throws before Winston made a jumper for a 72-52 Scots lead. Taylor made two more free throws and Cooper put in a layup. Winston made one of two from the line and Cooper scored again to put the Scots up 79-62 by the end of the third.

Taylor, who was 16-of-18 on free throws for the game, made two more to start the fourth period for Lyon College. Lopez and Kaza scored, then Kaza sank two free throws for an 87-72 lead with 7:28 to play.

Lopez put in a jumper and Hambelton made a three-pointer. Taylor sank two more free throws and added a layup to push the Lyon College lead back to 20 points, 96-76 with 5:35 to go.

Taylor made a three-pointer seconds later and Lopez hit another jumper to make it a 101-81 lead with 3:10 left on the clock. Taylor made another three-pointer, Chasity Taylor added a free throw and Soto scored with 26 seconds left from the free throw line to account for the Lyon College scoring.

Oliveira scores overtime winner to send the Scots to USCAA National Championship match

CORAOPOLIS, Penn. — Oliveira scores in overtime, Rangel picks up 15 saves to send Scots to USCAA National Championship match.

The Nov. 17 match between the #4 Scots and #5 Stanton University couldn’t be settled in the first 90 minutes, as the match went scoreless in regulation. A defensive masterclass by sophomore goalkeeper Gabriel Rangel kept the Scots in it, as Stanton got 28 shots off in the match. 15 of those shots for the Elks were on-goal, and every single one of those shots were saved by Rangel. That makes two clean sheets in two USCAA Tournament matches for the Brazilian goalkeeper, and increases his season total to 80 saves.

The Scots had nine total shots, with six of them being on-goal. Joao Barros had two shots, with one of those being on goal, Gustavo Giesbrecht’s lone shot of the match was on-goal, and Micah Rangel had a shot. The lone goal of the contest came just minutes into the overtime period, as sophomore forward Erik Oliveira broke the stalemate with the match winner in the 95th minute to secure the Scots’ 1-0 victory, sending them to the USCAA National Championship. Oliveira had four shots on the match, with three on-goal including the winner.

PITTSBURGH, Penn. — Lyon College men’s soccer defeated #2 Bryant & Stratton Syracuse 3-0 to win first USCAA National Championship on Nov. 18.

It was yet another dominant defensive performance by the Scots, as they held a Syracuse team that had scored nine goals in their first two USCAA Tournament matches to a shutout in the championship game. Syracuse got 18 shots off, but only four were on-goal and they were all saved in another brilliant 90-minute performance by sophomore goalkeeper Gabriel Rangel.

The Scots broke through first in the 37th minute off a scorcher that was tucked into the top left corner by freshman Lucca Torres. Coming into the USCAA tournament, Torres had two goals on the season. He added two more during the Scots’ tournament run, including both the rocket from today’s match along with the dagger in the USCAA opener match against #1 Rochester.

Torres’ goal gave the Scots a 1-0 lead, which they carried into the intermission.

Twenty minutes into the second half, senior Gustavo Giesbrecht tacked on a second goal to double the Scots advantage. The final blow came just ten minutes later as sophomore Matheus Nunes scored in the 75th minute to secure the 3-0 victory for Lyon College.

Sophomore forward Erik Oliveira assisted all three goals for the Scots in today’s national championship match.

The Scots had 15 total shots, with eight of them being on-goal. Giesbrecht and Nunes each had four total shots with two of them being on-goal and one goal scored each, Torres’ lone shot of the match was on-goal and reached the back of the net, Tomas Garzon and Joao Barros each had an on-goal shot, and Oliveria along with Nate Peterson and Luca Cirgliano each had one shot.

The Scots finished their season with a 10-match unbeaten streak, where they outscored their opponents by a remarkable 30 goals to three.

They finish the 2024 season with a final record of 11 wins, four draws, and five losses. They also finish the season with their second consecutive St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season Co-Championship and as the USCAA Men’s Soccer Division I National Champions.

Scots upset by Ozarks at home 81-78

BATESVILLE, Arkansas – The Lyon College men’s basketball Scots were upset at home in Becknell Gymnasium on Tuesday, Nov. 19, by the University of the Ozark Eagles 81-78 before a full house.

The Scots (2-2) got 23 points each from Kylon McCullough and Israel Palmer, 14 points from Malik Madison and 10 points from Frank Toney.

Colbie West added five points and John Paul Morgan put in a three-point play that put Lyon College in the lead late in the game.

A technical foul and a two straight turnovers in the final 30 seconds, spelled defeat for the Scots against the Eagles.

The game was tied 36-36 by halftime and Lyon College built as much as a five point lead early in the second half, but most of the contest was a back-and-forth battle with Ozarks.

The Scots scored 40 points in the paint, had 14 points off of turnovers, 12 second chance points, 15 fast-break points and got three points from the bench. The score was tied seven times and there were 13 lead changes.

Madison opened the game with a dunk on an assist from Toney. McCullough scored on a layup seconds later and Madison put in a basket inside for a three-point lead.

Madison scored again on a layup, then made two free throws for a 12-9 Scots advantage at the 14:54 mark.

Ozarks tied the game at 12-12, but a basket and a dunk from Palmer put Lyon up by four again. The Eagles scored 10 straight points to go up 22-16 before McCullough canned a jumper.

West scored inside, Palmer made one of two free throws and McCullough hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 24-24 with 3:49 to go in the first half.

After Ozarks took the lead again, Palmer sank a three-pointer, but the Eagles answered. Palmer hit another three-pointer and again, Ozarks answered. Finally, Madison got another dunk to tie the game at 32-32, but Ozarks moved out to a four point with 1:04 to go in the half.

Toney put in a layup and Madison got his third dunk of the game with 10 seconds left to tie the game 36-36.

Madison scored again to start the second half, then McCullough added a layup for a four-point Scots lead early on.

McCullough’s three-pointer at the 18:07 mark made it a 43-38 game.

Palmer scored twice, but Ozarks managed to cut the Scots lead to one point with 14:41 to go in the game, 49-48. McCullough made another three-pointers and Toney hit a trey for a 55-50

Lyon College lead, but Ozarks went on an 8-0 run to take the advantage.

West made a free throw, Toney put in a jumper and McCullough added a layup for a 60-58 lead for Lyon, but Ozarks tied the game at 60-60 with 8:06 left.

Palmer made a jumper shot and McCullough hit another three-pointer to extend the Scots to a five-point advantage and after a score by the Eagles, Palmer made two free throws and McCullough made one of two for a 68-63 Lyon College lead at the 5:45 mark.

Ozarks got to within two points, 70-68 but Morgan completed a three-point play to push the lead back to five with 4:12 to go. Toney made a three-pointer to keep the lead at five, but the Eagles came back and took a one-point lead, 77-76 with 48 seconds to play.

McCullough made a jumper for the Scots to retake the advantage with 35 second on the clock, but two crucial turnovers by Lyon ended up as a five-point swing for the Eagles to end the game.

Lyon College defeated by Washington University

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Lyon College women’s basketball team was blitzed by first-year Washington University head coach Lisa Stone’s Bears 119-49 on Friday, Nov. 22, in the first round of the McWilliams Tournament at WashU Fieldhouse.

The Scots (3-2) were led by Natalya Kaza with 11 points, Savanna Lopez hit for 10 points, Samantha Taylor had five points, Izabel Soto scored five points, Molly Mason had four points, Haven Cooper had four points Olivia Wallace scored four points, Jewel Walley hit a three-pointer, Savannah Stout scored a basket and Chasity Taylor had a free throw. Mia Winston, Alexis Shelton, Emily Walley, Olivia Jones and Faith James played in the game, but did not score.

Lyon was outscored 24-9 in the first quarter, 32-10 in the second quarter, 26-11 in the third quarter and 37-19 in the fourth period.

Scots women’s basketball falls to Transylvania in consolation game

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Lyon College women’s basketball team lost to the Transylvania Pioneers 110-54 in the consolation game at the McWilliams Classic at Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday afternoon.

The Scots (3-3) had no one score in double figures for the contest. Lyon College was led by Samantha Taylor with nine points, Savanna Lopez had eight points, Natalya Kaza had eight points, Haven Cooper scored six points, Molly Mason had four points, Emily Walley scored seven points, Olivia Wallace had four points, Jewel Walley had two points, Savannah Stout had two points, Izabel Soto scored two points and Olivia Jones scored two points. Alexis Shelton, Mia Winston and Faith James played in the basketball game and did not score.

The Scots were outscored 32-9 in the first quarter, 22-9 in the second quarter, 28-15 in the third quarter and 28-21 in the fourth period.

Lopez was named to the McWilliams Classic All-Tournament team.

Lyon College men’s basketball drops game at Austin College

SHERMAN, Texas – The Lyon College men’s basketball team fell in non-conference action at Austin College on Saturday afternoon 71-65 on Saturday afternoon.

The Scots (2-3) trailed 33-32 at halftime and were outscored 38-32 in the second half.

Kylon McCullogh led the Lyon College with 18 points, Israel Palmer added 16 points, Frank Toney scored 12 points, Madison Malik scored seven points, Colbie West added a free throw, Luke Bridges scored five points, Brody Tucker added three points, John Paul Morgan scored two points, while Trenton Bell and Kennedy Warren played in the game, but did not score.
