Jimmie R. Jones of Newport, Arkansas, departed this life on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at the age of 84. He was born July 17, 1940, in Monticello, Arkansas, the son of Jimmie Jack and Nora (Tucker) Jones.
Mr. Jones graduated from high school in Monticello and attended the University of Arkansas at Monticello, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. On January 20, 1963, Mr. Jimmie Jones married Miss Joyce Burgess, and together they enjoyed 61 years of marriage.
Mr. and Mrs. Jones relocated to Newport, Arkansas, where he became the owner and operator of Jones Home Furnishings in 1971. He enjoyed traveling across the U.S., visiting markets, often turning those trips into family vacations.
Mr. Jones was a fan of the Arkansas Razorbacks. He enjoyed watching westerns, gardening, collecting blue and white stoneware, and doing yard work. An avid fisherman, he was a kind, gentle man full of wisdom.
Mr. Jones was a long-time member of the Newport First Baptist Church, where he was a Deacon and a Sunday School teacher.
Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his son, Roger Curtis Jones, Sr.; his grandson, Roger C. Jones, Jr.; two brothers, Morrell Jones and Thomas Jones; and his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joyce (Burgess) Jones of the home; one son, Blake Jones of Parkville, Maryland; one granddaughter, Lisa Jones of Newport; one great-granddaughter, Caroline Rose Jones of Newport; several nieces and nephews; and a lifetime of friends.
Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 27, at Newport First Baptist Church, with interment in Watson Cemetery. Friends may visit at the church, on Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. until service time.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Loyce Walker, Earl Johnson, Brett Casey, Bobby Ross, Doug Tims, and Randall McGinnis. Honorary pallbearers are Christine Sanders, and members of Harold Erwin’s Sunday School Class.
