Dr. Branndii Peterson (above), executive director of TRIO programs at Lyon College, has been elected president of the Arkansas Association of Student Assistance Programs (AASAP), the organization representing federally funded TRIO programs across the state.

Peterson will lead AASAP’s efforts to support educational initiatives aimed at first-generation, low-income students and students with disabilities. TRIO programs, established under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “War on Poverty,” provide resources to help disadvantaged students succeed in postsecondary education.

Since joining Lyon College in 2021, Peterson has overseen the college’s TRIO initiatives, including the Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program and the APPLE Project Upward Bound. Both programs aim to bridge educational gaps and provide resources that prepare students for post-secondary success.

“Dr. Peterson’s election as AASAP president is a well-deserved recognition of her dedication and impact,” said Lyon College President Dr. Melissa Taverner. “Her leadership has strengthened TRIO programs at Lyon, transforming lives through education, and her influence at the state level will further elevate these essential services for students across Arkansas. We are incredibly proud of her and excited to see all she will accomplish.”

AASAP, founded in 1971, facilitates collaboration among TRIO project directors and staff statewide. Peterson said she looks forward to continuing that mission and helping students and families navigate the college experience.

“TRIO programs are more than just a benefit to our students; they serve as a resource for their families as well,” Peterson said. “We guide parents and students through crucial steps, like understanding financial aid or preparing for college life. Our programs foster partnerships that empower students to transition smoothly into the next phase of their lives.”

In March 2025, Lyon College TRIO staff will join TRIO alumni and advocates from across the country in Washington for the annual TRIO Policy Seminar, which highlights the impact of TRIO programs on student success.

Peterson’s career includes leadership roles at Goodwill Industries of Arkansas, Tyler Studios, and Job Corps. She holds a Ph.D. in urban higher education from Jackson State University, an MBA, and a master’s degree in healthcare administration.
