Kaza scores 37 points to lead Lyon past MUW 85-80
COLUMBUS, Miss. – Natayla Kaza tied a Lyon College single-game scoring record for the second time when she hit 37 points in an 85-80 win over the Mississippi University for Women Owls in Columbus, Mississippi, on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 23.
The Scots (4-3, 1-0) secured their first SLIAC win of the season. Kaza made 15-of-24 field goals, 5-of-12 three-pointers, and two free throws, along with eight rebounds.
Dalye Hambelton scored a season-high 17 points and had seven rebounds.
Savanna Lopez scored another double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds to go with six blocked shots. Samantha Taylor had ten assists and nine points, Haven Cooper added five points and six rebounds, Molly Mason had four points, and Alexis Shelton had three points.
Lyon College scored 48 points in the paint, 16 points off of 19 MUW turnovers, 14 second-chance points, 21 fast-break points, and eight bench points. The lead changed 11 times and was tied four times.
The Scots outscored MUW 28-23 in the first quarter, and 21-19 in the second period to lead 49-41. Both teams scored 19 points in the third quarter and the Owls outscored the Lyon 19-17.
West, Toney lead Scots past MUW
COLUMBUS, Miss. – Colbie West scored 15 points and Frank Toney added 13 to lead the Lyon College Scots over the Mississippi University for Women Owls 62-50 on Tuesday night, Nov. 26.
The Scots (4-4, 1-0) also got eight points from Kylon McCullough, six points from Malik Madison, four points from Israel Palmer, seven points from Trenton Bell, five points from Warren Kennedy and four points from Luke Bridges.
The Scots held a 30-27 halftime lead and outscored the Owls 32-23 in the second half.
West led in rebounds with eight and Madison had five blocked shots in the SLIAC contest.
Lyon College women’s basketball loses at Webster 77-67
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Despite a double-double by Samantha Taylor, who had 14 points and 11 steals and 18 points from Natalya Kaza and 14 points from Savanna Lopez, the Lyon College women’s basketball Scots dropped a 77-67 decision at Webster on Thursday night, Dec. 5, in SLIAC action.
The Scots (4-4, 1-1) led 17-13 after the first period, but trailed at halftime 29-27. Lyon College was outscored 21-19 in the third quarter and lost the fourth quarter 27-21.
Kaza made three-of-five three-pointers and hit five field goals to go with five free throws and had five rebounds for 18 points. Taylor tied a school record with 11 steals in a game (her own record when she was a freshman), dished out eight assists and hit for 14 points. Lopez had her outside jumper hitting in the first half and was six-of-10 from the field for 14 points.
Others to score included Haven Cooper with eight points and seven rebounds to lead the Scots. Dalye Hambelton had six points and five rebounds, Molly Mason scored four points and Alexis Shelton hit a three-pointer in the game.
Scots lose at Webster 75-69
ST. LOUIS, Missouri – Colbie West scored 24 points and had 12 rebounds, while Malik Madison had 12 points and 10 boards in a 75-69 loss at Webster on Thursday night, Dec. 5.
The Scots (3-4, 1-1) trailed 36-29 at halftime and a had a short-lived lead in the second half only to give way to Webster.
Frank Toney had 11 points, while Kylon McCullough scored seven points and had eight rebounds, Trent Bell added six points, Warren Kennedy added four points, Brody Tucker came off the bench to hit a three-pointer and Luke Bridges added a basket.
Lyon College scored 38 points in the paint, eight points off of turnovers, had 19 second chance points and got nine bench points. The score was tied twice and the lead changed seven times in the game.
The Scots shot 41 percent from the field and 30 percent from the three-point arch. Lyon College made 11 of 14 free throws and suffered 17 turnovers.
Scots men’s wrestling results from University of Ozarks Eagle Duals
CLARKSVILLE, Ark. — Five Scots competed at the University of Ozarks Eagle Duals on Saturday, Dec. 7.
The Scots were one of four teams at the meet, as they competed against host University of the Ozarks, Williams Baptist University, and Westminster College.
Ty Ferguson went 2-3 on the day, scoring a pin in his final match against Kannon Blagg of Westminster. Clay Queen Jr. finished 2-2 at the meet, also scoring a pin in his third match versus Austen James of Westminster. Eli Lupton finished 1-2 on the day, scoring a pin in his lone victory against Micah Oltmanns of Williams Baptist. Shmuel “Sam” Tabak went 0-3 on the day, narrowly missing the victory in his opening match as he fell via decision by only a single point. Liam Selhorst finished 0-1 on the day.
The Lyon College men’s wrestling team will return to action following winter break, as they will head to Missouri Baptist compete at the Tom Smith Invitational on Saturday, January 11.
Westminster defeats Lyon women’s basketball
FULTON, Mo. – The Lyon College women fell behind 15-0 and trailed 28-9 after the first quarter and never were able to get back into the game against the Westminster Blue Jays in a 96-50 SLIAC road loss on Saturday afternoon.
The Scots (4-5, 1-2) turned the ball over on their first three possessions, missed seven shots in a row and never recovered.
Lyon trailed by 21 points after the first quarter and 48-25 at halftime. The Scots were outscored 23-17 in the third period and 25-8 in the fourth quarter. They shot 24 percent from the field for the game and made only one of 12 three-pointers. Lyon College had 24 turnovers in the contest.
Natalya Kaza was the only player in double figures with 15 points for Lyon College. Samantha Taylor had seven points, six steals and five assists. Savanna Lopez had only six points and 10 rebounds, Haven Cooper scored seven points and had six rebounds, Molly Mason scored three points, Mia Winston had four points, Dalye Hambelton had one point as did Emily Walley, while Savannah Stout, Chasity Taylor and Jewel Walley had two points apiece.
Scots men’s basketball defeats Westminster
FULTON, Mo. – Kylon McCullough scored 22 points and Frank Toney added 18 to lead the Lyon College Scots past the Westminster Blue Jays 85-69 on Saturday afternoon in SLIAC action in Fulton.
The Scots (4-4, 2-1) led 34-30 at halftime and broke open the to a double-digit lead midway through the second period. Brody Tucker came in off the Scots bench to knock down three three-pointers that keyed the double-digit lead that rose to as much as 21-points four different times.
Colbie West, Luke Bridges and Johnzelle Bush each scored seven points apiece, while Malik Madison added five points, four blocked shots and six rebounds. John Paul Morgan and Trent Bell added four points each.
The Scots shot 53 percent for the game from the field and made eight of 22 three-pointers. Lyon scored 40 points in the paint, had 15 second chance points, and scored 20 points off of the fast-break. The score was tied four times, which came early in the first half and there were five lead changes during that point.
