A Stone County man charged in the 2023 death of his wife was found dead earlier this month.
The Stone County Leader first reported the Dec. 11 death of Fred Michael Mixon (pictured), 52, who was found at his residence near Mountain View, off Highway 5 South.
Mixon had been charged with first-degree murder in the Jan. 30, 2023, shooting death of his wife, Leslie Jo Mixon, 57. He surrendered to authorities that day following a brief standoff.
Authorities discovered Leslie Mixon’s body inside the residence after executing a search warrant. Fred Mixon was released in April 2023 after his initial bond of $1 million was reduced to $500,000. His trial had been scheduled for Dec. 18, 2024.
Stone County Sheriff Brandon Long told the Stone County Leader that Mixon’s death remains under investigation, but there is no evidence of foul play. A report from the state medical examiner’s office is pending.
