The Independence County Historical Society will delve into the history of the Cedar Grove community during its January meeting, set for Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025, at 2 p.m.

The event will take place at the Old Independence Regional Museum, located at 9th and Vine Streets in Batesville, and is free and open to the public.

The featured presentation, a slide show, will be led by Ginger Sandy, a lifelong Cedar Grove resident and historian. Sandy has dedicated years to researching the James family, a prominent name in the area, tracing their lineage back to Baltimore, Maryland. Her findings have been a focal point of the semi-annual James Family Reunion, where she regularly shares her work.

The Cedar Grove community, situated just south of the Independence and Sharp County boundary, lies along the historic Old Military Road. Built in 1830 by the U.S. government, the road served both local residents and travelers heading to Texas.

Sandy’s expertise and commitment to preserving Cedar Grove’s heritage earned her the 2018 Award for Excellence in Heritage Preservation from the Preserve Arkansas Association. The award recognized her work on the “Cedar Grove/Mobley Historic Preservation Facebook Page.”
