Independence County native and Cedar Ridge High School alum Austin Reaves scored a career-high 38 points Friday night, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a narrow 102-101 victory over the Brooklyn Nets.

Reaves tallied 15 of his points in the fourth quarter, including three 3-pointers, to help secure the win.

“This is unbelievable for a hometown boy!” Independence County Judge Kevin Jeffery told White River Now. “Austin Reaves continues to make Independence County proud.”

According to ESPN, Reaves shot 13 of 23 from the field and was a perfect 8 of 8 from the free-throw line. His previous career high was 35 points, achieved twice, including in a Dec. 31 game against Cleveland.

“Since Christmas Day — the Lakers’ last 10 games — Reaves is averaging 22.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 8.9 assists per game while shooting 44.7% from the field and 40.6% from beyond the arc,” Ron Gutterman of LakersNation.com reported. “He is legitimately playing at an All-Star level, something head coach JJ Redick said during this stretch.”

Reaves, a Newark native, attended Cedar Ridge High School, where he won back-to-back Class 2A state championships during his first two years. He was also a two-time Class 3A All-State selection. Reaves joined the Lakers in 2021.
