Obituary: Betty Fay (Brown) Shelley

Betty Fay (Brown) Shelley of Newport, Arkansas, departed this life Friday, January 17, 2025, at the age of 80. She was born September 9, 1944, the daughter of George and Rosie (Boone) Brown.

Mrs. Shelley was a graduate of Newport High School. She began working in housekeeping at Harris Hospital for many years and later worked at Price Chopper as a cake decorator. She married Mr. Carl W. Shelley on April 8, 1967, and together they built a life for their family.

Mrs. Shelley loved crafting, knitting, and crocheting. She was a wonderful cook and often used vegetables from her garden. She enjoyed canning her homegrown vegetables and tending to her flowers. Mrs. Shelley’s greatest joy in life was the time spent with her husband, sons, and granddaughters.

Mrs. Shelley is preceded in death by three brothers, her twin, Kenneth “Buck” Brown, Myron Brown, and Edward Brown; one sister, Mary Roach; and her parents.

She is survived by her husband of fifty-seven years, Carl W. Shelley, of the home; two sons, Michael Shelley and wife, Melissa, of Newport and Eric Shelley of Nashville, Arkansas; a brother, Ronald Brown of Smithville; three sisters, Ellen Barner of Newport, Connie Prince of Newport, and Kittie Jewel and husband, Ernie, of Algoa; two grandchildren, Michelle James and husband, Jordan, of Batesville and Amanda Shelley of Chicago, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 20, 2025, at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel, with Minister Stephen Barner officiating. Visitation will follow.
