Lyon College basketball teams have tough time on the road

Lyon College men lose to Greenville 121-116

GREENVILLE, Illinois – Colbie West scored 31 points and had 12 rebounds, Malik Madison had 23 points, Kylon McCullough scored 16 points, John Paul Morgan put in 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Frank Toney added 13 points, but the Lyon College Scots lost at Greenville 121-116 on Saturday afternoon in SLIAC men’s basketball action.

The Scots (10-7, 7-3) trailed 67-53 at halftime but outscored Greenville 63-54 in the second half and came within two points late in the game.

Others to score for Lyon College were Kennedy Warren, who had four points; Hudson Rogers, who had six points; Tucker Cunningham, who had three points; Johnzelle Bush, who had two points; Trent Bell, who had two points; and Brody Tucker, who had two points. Luke Bridges played in the game but did not score.

The Scots shot 58.6 percent from the field but made 1-of-9 three-pointers and 33 of 44 free throws.

They scored 80 points in the paint, had 21 points off of turnovers, scored 19 second chance points, had 15 fast break points, and got 29 points from the bench. The score was tied twice, and there were seven lead changes, all in the first half.

Warren scored the game’s first basket to put Lyon College up by two points, West added a free throw, and Toney made a layup for a 5-1 lead. McCullough hit a free throw, and Madison put in a layup for a Lyon College 8-1 lead. West made a layup to put the Scots up by nine points, 10-1, at the 17:13 mark of the first half.

Greenville returned to tie the game at 13-13 three minutes later. Morgan made two free throws to put the Scots in front, but Greenville hit a three-pointer to go up by one, 16-15. Bush got a tip-in to put Lyon College back in front, but Greenville took the lead.

McCullough made a layup with 11:23 to go in the half for a one-point Scots’ lead 23-22, then added two free throws, but Greenville tied the game 25-25 on a three-pointer.

West’s layup with 9:38 to go in the first put Lyon up 29-28, but Greenville went on a 9-0 run to retake the lead.

The Scots trailed by as much as 20 points three times late in the first half. Hudson’s layup for Lyon with 17 seconds left made it 67-53.

The Scots came back, and at the 17:19 mark of the second half, Warren hit a jumper to close the game to two points, 70-68. A little over two minutes later, Madison got a dunk to make it a one-point game, 73-72.

At the 13:54 mark, Toney hit a three-pointer to make it a one-point game again, 78-77. However, the Scots went down by as much as 15 points midway through the second half but made another run.

With 1:36 to go in the game, Toney made two free throws to close the gap to two points, 117-115. With 46 seconds left, McCullough made a free throw to cut the lead to three points, 119-116.

Scots women’s basketball falls at Greenville by 20

GREENVILLE, Illinois – Natalya Kaza scored 22 points, Chasity Taylor added 12, and Emily Walley scored 10 points in a 97-77 SLIAC loss at Greenville on Saturday afternoon.

The Scots (7-10, 4-6) fell behind 26-14 after the first quarter and trailed at halftime 54-29. Lyon College outscored Greenville 29-15 in the third quarter but lost the fourth period 28-19.

Savannah Stout scored eight points, Molly Mason scored six points, Dalye Hambelton scored six points, Haven Cooper scored six points, Savanna Lopez scored four points, and Alexis Shelton scored three points. Lyon College shot 37 percent from the field and made 6-of-26 three-pointers and 19-of-28 free throws.

The Scots had 28 points in the paint, scored 15 points off of turnovers, had seven second-chance points and six fast-break points. The bench highlighted the game with 36 points. The game was tied once and had two lead changes in the first few minutes of the first quarter. After that, Lyon College never held the lead.

The Scots came as close as 11 points on a layup by Cooper at the end of the third quarter to make the score 69-58.

Scots fall at Spalding 70-61

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – Frank Toney and Kylon McCullough scored 17 points, but the Spalding Golden Eagles won a 70-61 SLIAC contest on Thursday night.

The Scots (10-6, 7-2) trailed 29-22 at halftime and were outscored 41-39 in the second half.

Colbie West, Malik Madison, and Trent Bell each scored five points, Luke Bridges and Kennedy Warren scored four, and John Paul Morgan and Johnzelle Bush each scored two.

Lyon College shot 37.9 percent from the field, hit five of 14 three-pointers, and made 12 of 19 free throws. The Scots scored 28 points in the paint, had only four points off of Spalding turnovers, had 10 second-chance points, 13 fast-break points, and got 13 points from the bench.

The game was tied four times, and there were seven lead changes. A tip-in from Madison gave the Scots the initial lead in the first half. Warren added two free throws seconds later to make it a 4-3 lead, and at the 13:24 mark, Toney put in a layup for an 8-7 lead for Lyon College.

After Madison added a free throw, Spalding tied the game at 9-9. Bell made a three-pointer for a 12-10 Scots advantage, and Bush scored on a jumper for a 14-11 lead. Bridges made a free throw to keep Lyon in front, but Spalding made a three-pointer to make it 16-15.

The Scots trailed by as much as 10 points, 27-17, with three minutes to go in the first half.

West made a free throw in the second half to get Lyon College to within two points, 34-32, with 15:05 to go. Warren had a tip-in to tie the game at 34-34 at the 13:59 mark, but Spalding retook the lead.

Toney made a three-pointer and then came back for a layup to tie the game at 39-39 with 12:03 left to play, but again Spalding took the lead. Bridges completed a three-point play to get the Scots to within one point again, 43-42, at the 9:42 mark.

Two minutes later, McCullough made a three-pointer to give Spalding a two-point lead, 47-45. Two minutes after that, the Scots were down by 10 points, 55-45, and never recovered.

Scots women’s basketball falls at Spalding University

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – Natalya Kazascored 15 points, and Savanna Lopez scored 10 to lead Lyon College women’s basketball in a 78-58 loss at Spalding University on Thursday night in SLIAC action.

The Scots (7-9, 4-5) trailed 21-20 after the first quarter and 36-31 by halftime.

Spalding outscored Lyon College 18-13 in the third quarter and 24-14 in the fourth period.

Lopez finished with a double-double that included 10 points and 11 rebounds. Kaza had 15 points, six steals, and seven rebounds; Dalye Hambelton had nine points, 11 assists, and six rebounds; Haven Cooper had eight points, while Alexis Shelton, Molly Mason, and Emily Walley all had five points each. Chasity Taylor had one point, while Savannah Stout, Jewel Walley, Olivia Jones, Izabel Soto, and Olivia Wallace all played in the game but did not score.

Lyon College shot 39 percent from the field, hit four of 16 three-pointers, and made four of eight free throws.

The Scots got 30 points in the paint, scored 13 points off of 22 Spalding turnovers, had nine second-chance points, five fast-break points, and got 14 points off the bench.

The score was tied four times, and four lead changes happened in the first quarter.
