James earns first collegiate win; Results from TWU Dual
DENTON, Texas — D’Mysha James earns her first collegiate victory as the Lyon College women’s wrestling team competed at Texas Woman’s University.
The Scots competed in a tri-dual in Denton, Texas, where they took on both Texas Woman’s University and Schreiner University.
Coach Emma de Brum had five of her wrestlers compete at the event, as Rubi Gonzalez competed at 110, Mikayla Wallace in the 138, Madisen Nash in the 145, Sidney Milligan at 160, and D’Mysha James in the 180.
The day of competition began for the Scots at 3 p.m., when they had their first dual against host, Texas Woman’s University. Later in the evening, they held their final dual against Schreiner, which began at 7:30 p.m.
Gonzalez first took on Victoria Pena of TWU, and fell via pin fall at the 1:10 mark. Later on, Gonzalez competed against Prestejah Yockeman of Schreiner, where she lost on a pin fall at the 1:52 mark.
Wallace also finished 0-2 on the day, losing both matches via technical fall, 10-0 Laisha Rios of TWU and then 12-1 to Brooke Wieczorek of Schreiner.
Nash made her first appearance of the 2024-25 season at today’s tri-dual. She opened her day of competition against Maegan Flaherty of TWU, where she fell via 10-0 technical fall. Nash then again fell via 11-1 technical fall at the 3:11 mark against Azana King of Schreiner.
Milligan lost both her matches via narrow decisions, first to Mia Howell of TWU (5-1) and then to Scarlett Snodgrass of Schreiner (2-2).
James finished 1-1 on the day, with both her matches being exhibitions. She opened the day with a pin fall loss to Pauline Grace Heimuli of TWU at the 2:35 mark. James then earned her first collegiate win in a hard-fought battle against Symphanie Simpson of Schreiner, taking the match via pin fall at the 5:21 mark.
The Scots will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 15 when they compete at the SLIAC Conference Championships, which will be held at the University of the Ozarks.
Lyon College archers medal in State Indoor tournament
The Lyon College archery team took home gold, silver and bronze medals at the Arkansas State Indoor Collegiate tournament held in the turf room of the Lyon College football field house on Saturday.
After two rounds of 60 arrows, the following archers brought home a win for the Scots.
Enoch Busbin brought home first place in the Men’s Bowhunter class and Landon Jackson was third in the category.
Delacey Kell was first in the Women’s Compound competition for Lyon College.
Kaitlyn Lucio was second in the Women’s Bowhunter class and Maggie Mason gained a bronze medal for third place.
The Scots archers are scheduled to go to Hattisburg, Mississippi on Feb. 6 through February 9 to compete in the Regional Indoor Tournament.
