Scots men’s wrestling competes well at 2025 Cumberland Open

LEBANON, Tennessee — Lyon College men’s wrestling had a good showing at the 2025 Cumberland University Open.

The Scots garnered 15.5 team points, finishing in 11th place out of 29 teams, against opponents from several Division 1 programs from the SEC and the Big 12.

Five of Coach Chris Wilmington’s wrestlers competed at the event today, finishing 6-10 collectively.

Clay Queen Jr. finished 2-2 on the day with five team points, picking up his wins against Asher Seaver via pinfall at the 0:44 mark and also against Hayden Cannady of the University of Pikeville via a 16-0 technical fall.

Liam Selhorst also finished 2-2 on the day with five team points, picking up his victories against Isaac Perriguey of the University of Memphis and then against Jordan Haskins of Lindsey Wilson College via 12-3 majority decision.

Eli Lupton finished 1-2 on the day, with his victory coming against Jacob Clark of Huntingdon College via pinfall at the 2:54 mark.

Robert Lee also finished 1-2, with his lone victory against Adam Swanton of the University of Alabama.

Shmuel “Sam” Tabak finished 0-2 on the day.

The Scots will return to action on Saturday, February 15 when they travel to the University of the Ozarks to compete at the 2025 SLIAC Conference Championships.

Scots break seven indoor school records

ELSAH, Illinois — Lyon College Track & Field breaks seven school indoor records over the weekend at Principia College’s 2025 Prin Relays.

Novalee Lackey set a new Lyon College indoor women’s pole vault record with a mark of 2.40, Olivia Letkey set the indoor women’s long jump with a mark of 4.40, Samantha Love set the indoor women’s high jump record with a mark of 1.40, James McNew set the indoor men’s 3000-meter run record with a time of 9:57.39, Brianna Krantz set the indoor women’s 300-meter dash record with a time of 44.59, the Lyon A men’s distance medley run set a new record with a time of 12:06.26, and finally the Lyon A women’s 4×200 meter relay team set a new school indoor record with a time of 1:57.17

Toney scores 22 to lead Scots past Westminster College 102-67

BATESVILLE, Arkansas – The Lyon College Scots got 22 points and eight assists from Frank Toney and 18 points from Kylon McCullough that led to a 102-67 win over Westminster College on Saturday afternoon at Becknell Gymnasium.

The Scots (12-7 and 9-3) led 60-33 at halftime and outscored Westminster 42-34 in the second half.

Colbie West added eight points and six rebounds, Malik Madison scored eight points, had six rebounds and three blocked shots, Warren Kennedy scored four points, Luke Bridges put in nine points, John Paul Morgan had five points and five rebounds, Tucker Brody added five points, Tucker Cunningham scored five points, Johnzelle Bush had four points, Trenton Bell added three points, Hudson Rogers scored three points, Jackson Midyett had three points, Gavin Brunson scored three points and Isaiah Sweetwine added two points in the win.

Lyon College had 44 points in the paint, scored 17 points off of turnovers, had 15 second-chance points, scored 22 fast-break points and got 42 points from the bench. The Scots led the entire game and there were two lead changes.

McCullough scored the first four points of the game and Toney added a three-pointer for a 7-0 Lyon College lead early in the first half. Westminster came back to take a 10-7 lead until West and Toney scored to put the Scots up 11-10 at the 13:57 mark. Toney put in a layup and West scored inside, then Toney made a three-pointer. Bell made a three-pointer and Madison got a dunk off the fast-break. Bush and Cunningham both scored for Lyon College, then Madison scored to make it a 29-21 Lyon College lead with 8:05 left in the first half.

Bush made two free throws, Cunningham made a three-pointer and McCullough hit a three-pointer to make it 37-23. Kennedy scored on a layup, McCullough made a three-pointer and Warren scored again. Toney hit a three-pointer, West scored and McCullough made a three-pointer for a 52-31 Scots lead with 2:37 to go in the half. McCullough made two three-pointers and Toney a hit three-pointers, then Bridges closed out the half with a basket.

Madison opened the second half with a dunk for Lyon College, Toney put in a layup, and McCullough hit a layup for a 66-33 lead with 17:38 to go. Toney completed a four-point play to make it 70-33 Scots and Madison ended the Lyon College run with another dunk. West scored on a layup, Morgan made a three-pointer, then Bridges scored two times in a row for the Scots. Bridges added a free throw and hit another layup to make it 84-46 with 10:40 to go in the game.

Morgan scored in the paint, Brunson hit a three-pointer, Tucker made two free throws, Rogers hit a three-pointer, Sweetwine put in a layup and MIdyett made good on a three-pointer to make it 102-65 with 28 seconds left.

Kaza breaks 1,000 point mark; Lyon College drops game 110-90 to Westminster

BATESVILLE, Arkansas – Junior guard/forward Natalya Kaza only needed 23 points to break the 1,000 points mark for her basketball career at Lyon College and she scored 33 points.
The basket that put her over the top came with 2:53 to go in the third quarter of the Scots 110-90 loss to Westminster College on Saturday afternoon at Becknell Gymnasium.

The Scots (7-12, 4-8) fell behind 25-21 after the first quarter and trailed 55-38 at halftime. Westminster led 86-66 after the third period and both teams scored 24 points each in the final quarter.

Along with Kaza, Savanna Lopez had 28 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double, Molly Mason scored nine points, Dalye Hambelton had six points and eight assists, Emily Walley scored five points, Alexis Shelton had three points and six assists, Haven Cooper had two points, Savannah Stout scored two points and Olivia Jones had two points. Jewel Walley, Izabel Soto and Olivia Wallace played in the game, but did not score.

Westminster (14-5, 11-1) was led by Annette Ramirez with 36 points.

Lyon College shot 44 percent for the game and made 6-of-26 three-pointers and 10-of-15 free throws. The Scots scored 30 points in the paint, had 16 points off of turnovers, 19 second-chance points, 23 fast-break points and 11 bench points. The score was tied one time in the game at 17-17 and there were no lead changes.

Westminster jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but a basket by Cooper and two free throws from Shelton tied the game at 17-17 with 3:08 left in the first period. Westminster opened up a 25-17 lead until Lopez made two free throws and Mason scored on a layup to cut the lead to four points.

Kaza had a three-pointer in the first 10 minutes.

Westminster went on a 8-0 run early in the second period to go up by 12 points, 33-21 before Mason scored for Lyon College. Stout hit a jumper, Kaza scored inside, then Hambelton stopped another run by Westminster with a basket to make it 45-29 at the 3:49 mark. Kaza scored on a layup, Lopez hit a jumper, and made another jumper before Kaza scored to make it 53-37. Kaza completed a three-point play with a free throw.

Kaza had seven points in the second period and 10 for the first half.

In the third quarter, Kaza made a jump shot, Lopez scored, and Emily Walley hit a three-pointer. Kaza scored on a jumper, Lopez put in a layup and Kaza made a three-pointer. She made another three-pointer a few seconds later and hit a jump shot at the 2:53 mark to break the record. Lopez scored, Emily Walley had a jumper fall in and Shelton made a free throw to make it 86-66.

Kaza scored 14 points in the third quarter and had 24 points in the game by then and 1,001 points.

Mason made a three-pointer for Lyon in the fourth quarter, Jones scored inside and Kaza made a three-pointer. Kaza added a layup, Lopez scored, then Kaza made two free throws. Lopez made a jumper, and hit another jumper, then Hambelton scored to make it 105-86. Kaza scored on a layup and Lopez made a jumper to end the scoring.

Kaza added nine more points to finish with 33 and up her total 1,032 points for her career.

Lyon College men’s basketball gets important SLIAC win over Webster

BATESVILLE, Arkansas – Kylon McCullough scored 22 points, Frank Toney added 18 points and Malik Madison had 13 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the Lyon College Scots past the Webster Gorlocks 71-68 on Thursday night at Becknell Gymnasium.

The Scots (11-7, 8-3) outscored Webster 31-28 in the first half and both teams scored 40 points each in the second stanza.

Kennedy Warren added nine points, Colbie West scored six points and John Paul Morgan had three points in the win. Johnzelle Bush, Luke Bridges, Tucker Cunningham and Trent Bell played in the game, but did not score.

The Scots shot 44.8 percent from the field, hit 5-of-19 three-pointers and made 14-of-19 free throws. Lyon had 40 points from the paint, scored 14 points off of turnovers, had 15 second-chance points, 19 fast-break points and got three points from the bench.

The score was tied six times and the lead changed 11 times in the game. McCullough led the way for the Scots to an 18-13 lead with 10:03 to go in the first half. Webster tied the game, but McCullough scored to put Lyon College up by two points. Toney made a three-pointer, but Webster came back to take a one point lead, 24-23.

Warren got the lead back for the Scots with a driving jumper, then Madison put down a dunk on an alley-oop pass from Toney. West made two free throws and McCullough closed out the first half with a jumper to make it 31-28.

Webster tied the game at 33-33 early in the second half and took the lead, but Warren tied the game at 35-35. At the 15:41 mark, Madison put down another dunk to give the Scots a 39-38 lead and a minute later, McCullough scored to make it 41-40.

As the game went back and forth, Warren hit a shot in the paint for a 43-42 Lyon College lead with 13:29 left to play. Webster tied the game, but McCullough hit a jumper, then Madison scored on a dunk and hit a layup in the paint to make it 49-45.

Morgan made a wide-open three-pointer to give the Scots their largest lead of seven points with 11:17 left, 52-45. McCullough made three points in a row and Toney hit a three-pointer to make it 57-51. Tony scored on a layup and then hit a step-back three-pointer for a 62-56 lead with 6:15 left in the game.

Toney made two free throws, but Webster came back to take a 65-64 lead with 3:42 to play. Madison tied the game on a free throw and Warren added a free throw, but McCullough’s jumper with 35 seconds remaining put the Scots up 68-67.

Free throws from Toney and McCullough in the waning moments and a key turnover and a missed three-pointer at the buzzer by Webster led to the win.

Lyon College women’s basketball drops game to Webster

BATESVILLE, Arkansas – There were some milestones made by the Lyon College Scots women’s basketball team as Savanna Lopez eclipsed the 500 rebounds mark in her career and Natalya Kaza inched closer to 1,000 points with 31 points, but the visiting Webster won the SLIAC contest at Becknell Gymnasium on Thursday night 104-80.

The Scots (7-11 and 4-7) fell behind Webster 40-21 in the first quarter, but outscored the Gorlocks 23-10 in the second period to make it a 50-44 game. Webster came out in the second half to outscore Lyon College 27-10 in the third quarter and 27-26 in the fourth period.

Kaza led the way with 31 points, Lopez had 14 points and eight rebounds, Alexis Shelton scored 10 points, Jewel Walley, Molly Mason and Olivia Jones scored five points each, Savannah Stout added four points, Emily Walley had three points and Izabel Soto hit a three-pointer. Dalye Hambelton didn’t score in the game, but dished out 10 assists. Haven Cooper had five rebounds, but did not score and Olivia Wallace had two rebounds in the loss.

The Scots shot 40.9 percent from the field, made 5-of-15 three-pointers and 21-of-30 free throws. They got 30 points in the paint, scored 24 points off of turnovers, had 14 second-chance points, 25 fast-break points and 20 bench points. The game was tied one time at 2-2.

Lyon College had 43 turnovers in the game and Webster had 24.

Even though the Scots trailed by 19 points entering the second period, Kaza made two layups in a row, Lopez made a jumper, Jones made two free throws, Shelton hit a layup on the fast-break, Kaza added a free throw and Lopez scored on another jump shot.

Kaza drove the lane for a layup, Stout made a three-pointer and Kaza made two free throws to cut the Webster lead down to 48-41 with 1:30 to go in the first half. Mason stepped out for a three-pointer just before the buzzer to make it 50-44.
