Obituary: Harold Wayne Helms

Harold Wayne Helms, 71, of Newport, passed from this life on January 31, 2024. He was born in Newport on May 21, 1953, to Alfred Henry and Elizabeth Sara (Lance) Helms.

Harold was a hardworking man who dedicated his life to farming. He took great pride in his work and found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether he was out in the fields or fixing something with his hands, he always put in his best effort. He had a deep love for basketball and spent many years playing and enjoying the game. He also loved rabbit hunting, a pastime that brought him much joy and good memories.

Above all, Harold cherished his family, especially his grandchildren. He found his greatest happiness in spending time with them, sharing laughter, and creating lifelong memories.

A man of faith, he attended the Assembly of God Church in Newport, where he strengthened his relationship with the Lord. Harold will be remembered for his hard work, kind heart, and unwavering love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, love, and cherished memories. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by her parents; his wife, Juanita Helms; his stepson, Pete Vega; his stepdaughters, Paula Roblez, and Christie Corbit; his brother, Edward Helms, Bobby Helms, and A.L. Helms; his sister, Martha Pierce, and Evelyn Smith.

He is survived by his son, Dewayne Helms (Misty) of Beebe and Timothy Helms of Newport; his stepsons, Carlos Vega and Rodney Vega; his stepdaughter, Kathy Vega; his sisters, Elizabeth Staggs and Phyllis Manuel; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a lifetime of friends.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Garrett Easter, Justin Staggs, Robert Settlocker, Denny Brownfield, Derrick Cagle, and Eugene Pierce.

Service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 10, 2025, at Dillinger Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Dewayne Helms officiating. The interment will be at Walnut Grove Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 9, 2025.
