Scots women’s basketball falls at Eureka 87-74
EUREKA, Illinois – The Lyon College Scots women’s basketball team had four players score in double-figures, but suffered 32 turnovers in an 87-74 loss at Eureka College on Thursday night.
The Scots (7-15, 4-11) were outscored 23-22 in the first quarter but led at halftime 40-38 after outscoring Eureka 18-15 in the second quarter. Eureka returned in the third period to take a 72-59 lead and held on for a 14-point, the seventh straight loss for Lyon College.
Natalya Kaza led the Scots with 18 points and had nine rebounds, Savanna Lopez had 14 points and 11 rebounds, Molly Mason added 11 points, and Dalye Hambelton had 10 points. Jewel Walley scored nine points, Haven Cooper and Emily Walley scored four points each, Savannah Stout scored two, and Alexis Shelton scored two. Olivia Jones played in the game but did not score.
Lyon College shot 42.4 percent from the field and made six of 15 three-pointers. The Scots went 18-of-21 at the free throw line, scored 32 points in the paint, had 18 points off of Eureka turnovers, scored 12 second-chance points, added 16 fast-break points, and got 17 points from the bench.
The game was tied four times, and there were seven lead changes.
The Scots started fast, with Mason hitting a three-pointer, and then Kaza put in two baskets in a row for a 7-2 lead early in the first quarter. Eureka came back to take a 10-9 lead, but a three-pointer from Jewel Walley tied the game at 12-12. With 2:14 to go in the first quarter, Emily Walley made a jumper to put Lyon College ahead 20-19, and Lopez scored on a fast-break to make it a three-point lead, but Eureka came back to tie the game and take the lead at the free throw line with 14 seconds left, 23-22.
Hambelton scored to put the Scots back in front to start the second quarter, Kaza made two free throws, and Jewel Walley scored on a layup. Lopez put in a jumper to give Lyon College its largest game lead, 30-23, with 7:33 to go before halftime. Eureka fought back and tied the game at 36-36 with 2:13 to go, but Hambelton added two free throws, and Cooper made two from the free throw line for a 40-36 lead at the 1:33 mark.
Eureka tied the game at 40-40 on the first basket of the third quarter. Lyon College didn’t score until Mason put in a layup in the paint to make it 48-42. The Scots got back to within four points on a three-pointer from Jewel Walley and a three-pointer from Hambelton, 55-51, with 6:02 left in the period, but Eureka managed to up its lead to as much as 13 points twice in the final minute to lead 72-59.
The Scots fell behind by as much as 20 points early in the fourth quarter, 81-61, but came back to cut the lead down to nine points when Hambelton hit a free throw with 2:11 to go in the game.
The Scots will be on the road again on Saturday afternoon at Blackburn College.

Scots defeat Eureka 88-63
EUREKA, Illinois – The Lyon College Scots had three players score in double-figures in an 88-63 win at Eureka College on Thursday night.
The Scots (15-7, 12-3) took control of the game early on and led 40-25 at halftime. Lyon College outscored Eureka 48-38 in the second half to claim a 25-point win on the road in the SLIAC.
Frank Toney led the Scots with 17 points, Trenton Bell added 11 points, and Kennedy Warren scored 10. Kylon McCullough, Colbie West, Malik Madison, and Jonzelle Bush all scored eight points each in the win. John Paul Morgan had five points, while Tucker Cunningham, Hudson Rogers, and Luke Bridges had four points each. Gavin Brunson added a free throw for his only point, while Isaiah Sweetwine and Jackson Midyett played in the game but did not score.
The Scots shot 55 percent from the field and made 9-of-15 three-pointers and hit 13 of 17 free throws. They scored 36 points in the paint, had 14 points off of Eureka turnovers, had 14 second-chance points, 18 fast-break points, and got 37 points from the bench. The game was tied once, and there was one lead change early in the first half.
The Scots led 3-0 on a shot by McCullough to open the game, and Warren scored before Eureka came back to take a 6-5 lead. A free throw from West tied the game at 8-8 at the 13:48 mark of the first half, then Lyon College caught fire. Bell made a three-pointer, Toney hit a jump shot, McCullough scored inside, and Toney made a three-pointer for an 18-8 lead. Bell is credited with another basket, and Toney scored again with a 22-8 lead. West, Madison, and Warren scored. Madison made a shot, West put in two free throws, and Madison scored. Morgan made a three-pointer to put Lyon up 38-21 with 50 seconds to go in the first half.
The Scots kept a double-digit lead early in the second half on scores from Toney, Kennedy, and McCullough to make it 46-31. Toney’s three-pointer at the 14:40 mark made it a 20-point Lyon College lead, 53-33. Morgan, Toney, and Bush scored to keep the lead at 22 points. Toney scored twice in a row, and Bush completed a three-point play. Cunningham made two free throws at 10:19 to make it a 68-43 lead for Lyon.
Bell made a three-pointer, Cunningham put in a basket, and Warren scored to give the Scots their largest lead of the night at 29 points, 83-54 with 4:16 to play.
Lyon College will play at Blackburn on Saturday at 3 p.m.
