
Scots men’s basketball falls to Villa Maria in USCAA semifinals
BUFFALO, New York — The Lyon College Scots men’s basketball team saw their season end on Thursday night in the USCAA Division I National Tournament semifinals with a 60-52 loss to Villa Maria at Villa Maria College Athletic Center.
The Scots (18-9) held a slim 26-25 halftime lead and were outscored in the second half by nine points.
Kylon McCullough led Lyon College with 12 points, Frank Toney finished with 11 points, and Warren Kennedy scored 10. Colbie West had eight points, Malik Madison scored five points, John Paul Morgan had four points and 12 rebounds to lead the team on the boards, Johnzelle Bush had two points, while Trenton Bell and Tucker Cunningham were both in the game, but did not score.
The Scots shot 37 percent from the field, made only 2-of-20 three-pointers, and hit 10-of-14 free throws. They scored 30 points in the paint, had nine points off of turnovers, six second-chance points, four fast-break points, and six points from the bench.
The game was tied four times, and the largest lead Lyon had was five points, 5-0, at the 18:03 mark of the first half.
Kennedy started the scoring with a three-pointer for the Scots, then West added two free throws, but Villa Maria came back to get within one point before Toney hit a jump shot. Villa Maria tied the game at 7-7 and went ahead by five points until McCullough put in a layup. McCullough scored two more times on layups, and Bush tied the game with a basket at the 9:28 mark of the first half.
Villa Maria led 19-15 when Toney made a layup for Lyon College, and Kennedy tied the game at 19-19 with a layup with 6:10 to go in the first half. Villa Maria again took the lead, but West put in a layup to tie it at 21-21 with 3:43 to go. Villa Maria led 25-21 when Kennedy hit another layup and completed the three-point play with a free throw. Madison finished the half with a fast-break dunk to put the Scots up 26-25 at halftime.
West scored inside to start the second half, but Villa Maria tied it at 28-28 and went on to lead by two points until McCullough scored for the Scots to tie the game at 30-30. After a Villa Maria basket, Madison put in a free throw, but Villa Maria went ahead 38-31 with 15:23 to go in the game. McCullough put in two layups in a row to cut the lead to three points, but Villa Maria went up by five points with 12:56 to play, 40-35, before Kennedy scored again for the Scots.
Villa Maria led by as much as eight points when Madison put in two free throws to cut the lead to 45-39 with 9:46 left. Toney made a three-pointer, and Morgan made two free throws to make it a one-point game at 45-44.
Villa Maria went up 49-44, but Morgan scored inside. Villa Maria answered with a six-point lead with 4:24 remaining, 52-46. Toney made a layup and hit a jumper to cut the lead to 54-50 with 2:14 left. West added two free throws for Lyon College with 51 seconds to go, but Villa Maria scored the final four points of the game.
On Tuesday: Scots beat B&S-Buffalo
BUFFALO, New York — Kylon McCullough scores 23, Malik Madison adds 20 points to lead Lyon College by the Bryant & Stratton-Buffalo Bobcats on Tuesday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the USCAA Division I National Small College Tournament at the Villa Maria Athletic Center in Buffalo, New York 84-63.
Along with McCullough and Madison, Frank Toney scored 14 points and 10 rebounds, Kennedy Warren added 11, and Colbie West scored eight. Johnzelle Bush scored four points, Trenton Bell had two points, Luke Bridges scored two points, John Paul Morgan did not score but had eight rebounds, and Tucker Cunningham did not score. Jackson Midyett, Hudson Rogers, Gavin Brunson, and Isaiah Sweetwine played in the final minutes of the game.
The Scots took control of the game early on and led 48-31 at halftime, then outscored the Bobcats 36-32 in the second half to win by 21 points. Lyon College scored 30 points in the paint, had 13 points off of Buffalo turnovers, scored 10 second second-chance points, two fast-break points, and eight points from the bench.
The score was tied one time, and there was one lead change.
The game started with West hitting one of two free throws, but Buffalo got the lead on a three-pointer. A short time later, Madison put in a layup for a 3-3 tie, then West scored to put the Scots in front. The Bobcats tied the game at 5-5, but Madison dunked and got Lyon College rolling.
McCullough, who was 6-of-6 on three-point shots, followed with a three-pointer. Toney completed a fast-break with a layup and came back to hit a jumper. Madison put in a layup to make it 16-5 with 15:23 to go in the first half before Buffalo scored a couple of baskets to get back to within seven points.
Madison added a free throw and hit a jumper, but the Bobcats managed to cut the Lyon College lead down to five points with 10:26 to go in the half. Bush answered with a three-pointer, and Bridges put in a layup to make it 28-18.
Buffalo made it a six-point game, but Toney hit a three-pointer, and McCullough made his second trey to up the Scots’ lead to 32-20 at the 6:49 mark. After two Buffalo free throws, Warren scored on an inside jumper, then put in a layup, and Madison added two free throws for a 38-22 lead two minutes later.
McCullough knocked down another three-pointer, and West added a free throw. Toney made two from the line, and Bush added a free throw to put Lyon College up 45-26 with 1:30 to go. McCullough made another three-pointer with 41 seconds left for the Scots, who led by 17 at the break.
After Buffalo started the second half with a basket, Toney put in a layup, and Warren scored inside to push the Scots lead back to 19 points. McCullough added two free throws and canned another three-pointer, and West put in two free throws to give Lyon College its largest lead of the game at 26 points, 59-33, with 14:21 left to play.
Over the next two minutes, the Bobcats brought the lead down to 18 points until Madison got a dunk off an alley-oop pass from Toney.
Three minutes later, the Bobcats clawed back to within 15 points, and Toney gave the Scots its only score with a free throw. Madison broke the short scoring-drought with a layup to make it 64-47 with 9:08 to play. McCullough added a free throw, Toney hit a jumper, and Madison scored inside for a 69-52 Lyon College lead with 5:59 remaining. Madson made a free throw, and Warren added a free throw before McCullough hit another three-pointer for a 74-58 lead.
Warren put in four straight free throws after diving for a loose basketball both times, then McCullough put in a layup with 2:24 to go for an 80-58 Lyon College lead. After Buffalo scored, Bell got free on the baseline for a two-handed slam that brought the Scots bench to its feet, then West added two free throws to push the lead back to 22 points at the 1:39 mark.
Scots women’s golf finishes first in dual with Hendrix
BATESVILLE, Arkansas — Jesi Odom led the Lyon College Scots women’s golf team to first place in dual action with the Hendrix Warriors independent golfers on Thursday.
Odom shot a 99 on the day, birdied hole number one, and even parred hole 15 on a windy Thursday at the Course at Eagle Mountain.
Madison Robb was second for the Scots with a 102 with even pars on holes number three and 15. Zoe Anderson shot even par on hole six and finished with a 104. Keylee Lyons ended her round with a 134.
The Scots ladies will play in the Central Baptist College Invitational next Monday and Tuesday at Cypress Creek in Cabot.
Scots men’s golfers defeat Hendrix in dual at Eagle Mountain
BATESVILLE, Arkansas — The Lyon College Men’s Golf team defeated the Hendrix Warriors in dual match-play action at the Course at Eagle Mountain on Thursday.
The Scots A team finished with 307, 14 strokes ahead of second-place Hendrix A with 321. Lyon B shot a team total of 347 for third place, and Hendrix B shot 355 for fourth place.
Individually, John Blake Turner, who led all scorers, had the low score of a three-over-par 75. He birdied holes number six, seven, nine, and 11 for a 37 on the front nine and a 38 on the back nine.
Ryan Kriz was second for the scores with a four-over 76. Kriz had birdies on one, 14, and 18. He shot a 39 on the front nine and trimmed two strokes off on the back nine with a 37.
Michael Winne and Manav Perfecto both shot six over for the dual. Winne birdied nine and 18 to finish with a 78, while Perfecto had a birdie on hole number 13 and finished with a 78 with consistent 39s on the front and back nines.
Brooks Vangilder had a birdie on hole seven and finished the day with an 83.
Lyon’s B team was led by Robert Hopper with an 82. Wes Lange was second with an 84. Ace Sibley shot an 89, and Alex Gleason had a 92 on the day.
The Scots will be playing next Monday and Tuesday at Cypress Creek Golf Course in Cabot for the Central Baptist College Invitational.
Scots wrestling results from Day One of NCWA Nationals
BOSSIER CITY, Louisiana — Lyon College men’s and women’s wrestling began their competition at the 2025 NCWA Nationals at Brookshire Grocery Arena on Thursday.
On the men’s side of the competition for the Scots, they finished a collective 7-5 on opening day, securing 19.0 team points.
Through day one of the tournament, the Scots sit in 25th out of 89 teams in the men’s standings.
Junior Eli Lupton finished 2-1 on the day, competing in the 197-pound weight class.
Lupton defeated Gregory Mullinax of Ohio State University within the first minute, coming away with a pin fall victory at the 0:45 mark.
In his second bout, Lupton fell via 19-3 technical fall to Isaiah Hernandez of Vanguard University.
Lupton snagged his second victory in the consolation bracket opener, securing an 8-3 fall victory at the 4:03 mark against JeRon Rayam of West Chester University (PA).
Junior Ty Ferguson finished 1-1 on the day, competing in the 125-pound weight class.
Ferguson took on Rayyan Rashid of the University of Connecticut to begin his tournament run, earning the victory via fall over Rashid at the 1:50 mark of the opening period.
In the second round of the championship bracket, Ferguson fell to Wayshaun Hicks of Liberty University via 6-0 fall at the 3:41 mark.
Ferguson earns a first-round bye in the consolation bracket and will take on the winner of Cruz Kaye of Ottawa University (AZ) versus Anthony Nguyen of the University of Washington on Friday.
Junior Clay Queen Jr. finished 2-1 on the day, competing in the 149-pound weight class.
Queen Jr. opened his tournament run against Jack Dean of the University of Connecticut, winning against Dean in the first period via fall at the 2:02 mark.
In the second round of the championship bracket, Queen Jr. fell via 11-4 decision to Camron Crump of Life University.
Queen Jr. earned a forfeit victory in the opening round of the consolation bracket, sending him to the bracket’s round-of-16 bout against Adam Deeney of Montana State University.
Sophomore Shmuel “Sam” Tabak finished 1-1 on the day, competing in the 133-pound weight class.
Tabak began his run against Michael Slass of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (NY), earning his second collegiate victory via 20-11 major decision after three periods.
In the next round of the championship bracket, Tabak fell at the 0:53 mark to Chase Arnestad of Liberty University.
Tabak earns a first-round bye in the consolation bracket and will face the winner of Liam Campbell of the University of Massachusetts versus William Caprenter of the University of Florida on Friday.
Junior Robert Lee finished 1-1 on the day, competing in the 285-pound weight class.
Lee started his tournament run against Dzevat Kolenovic of Springfield Technical Community College (MA), dropping a hard-fought bout against Kolenovic via 12-6 fall at the 5:23 mark.
In the consolation bracket opening round, Lee picked up a 6-3 fall victory at the 3:49 mark against Spencer Green of The Apprentice School.
On Friday afternoon, Lee will continue his run in the consolation bracket in a round-of-16 bout against Josh Hermann of Liberty University.
Senior Liam Selhorst had to medically forfeit his matches on the day.
On the women’s side of the competition for the Scots, they finished a collective 1-1 on opening day, securing 3.0 team points.
Through day one of the tournament, the Scots sit in 27th place out of 52 teams in the women’s standings.
Sophomore Rubi Gonzalez finished 1-0 on the day, competing in the 110-pound weight class.
Gonzalez defeated Carlita Cardona-Arce of Washington State University at the 2:00 mark via fall.
The victory sends Gonzalez into the quarterfinal round of the championship bracket, where she will take on top-seeded Krystal Carona of the University of Nevada at Las Vegas on Friday.
Freshman Kaylei Parish finished 0-1 on the day, competing in the 103-weight class.
Parish fell in the opening round of the championship bracket to Kaelynn Seidl of the University of Nevada at Las Vegas via fall at the 2:34 mark.
The loss sends Parish to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket, where she will compete against Zalanna Garcia of the University of Houston on Friday.
Senior Mikayla Wallace and sophomore Sidney Milligan had to forfeit their matches on the day.

Scots softball drops doubleheader at Williams Baptist
WALNUT RIDGE, Arkansas – The Lyon College Scots softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon, 8-1 and 6-3 to the host Williams Baptist Eagles.
The Scots (3-10) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning of the first game, but Williams Baptist answered with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth and went on to win 8-1.
Lyon College got its only run on a solo homer to center field from Ashley Abel.
Able had one of only three hits for the Scots. Olivia Orf went 2-for-3 on the day, which included a double. Lyon College turned two double-plays in the first game.
Sydney Lasher (3-2) suffered the loss for the Scots, going 3.2 innings and giving up eight hits and eight runs with two walks to the 21 batters she faced. Georgia Holzer came in to pitch 2.1 innings, gave up only one hit, and had one strike out.
In the second game, Lyon College held a 2-0 lead after the top of the third inning, but Williams Baptist got a run in the bottom half of the third, then added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the fifth to lead 6-2. The Scots got a single run in the top of the sixth to account for a 6-3 loss.
In the first inning, Orf doubled to right field to bring in Brianna Morquecho. In the top of the third inning, Rebecca Rodriguez reached first on an error that allowed Anna Voth to score to make it 2-0 Scots.
After Williams Baptist returned to take a 6-2 lead, Voth singled to center field to bring in Fallon Lancaster to make it 6-3 in the top of the sixth inning.
The Scots return to action with a home doubleheader against Rhodes College on March 22.
Scots defeat Hendrix 9-5 in 12 innings
CONWAY, Arkansas — Walker Smith singled in two runs in the top of the 12th inning to secure a 4-run, 9-5 win over the Hendrix College Warriors in Conway on Tuesday night.
Ironically, the Scots (8-5) are riding a 4-game winning streak after the heroics at the top of the 12th inning. Landon Swallow led off with a single to left field, then Eli Marcotte reached on a fielder’s choice. Kooper McCoy was hit by a pitch, and Marcotte advanced to second. Slade Inman laid down a small-ball, bunt-single and advanced to second on the over throw by the Warriors. On the play, McCoy went to third while Marcotte scored on the play to put Lyon College up 6-5. Misal Santiago came in to run for McCoy and scored when Ashton Compton reached on a fielder’s choice to make it 7-5. Braden Hendrix was tagged out between first and second, and Compton advanced to second. With two outs, Smith singled to right field to bring in Inman and Compton to give the Scots a more comfortable 9-5 lead.
Lyon pitcher Kenny Jennings, who picked up the win, got the Warriors in order in the bottom of the 12th to secure the road victory.
The Scots scored first in the top of the first when McCoy tripled to right field to bring in Swallow.
After Hendrix came back to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first, Lyon College starting pitcher Patrick Babcock struck out five batters and went six innings before being relieved.
Lyon took the lead again in the top of the sixth when McCoy hit his second triple to right field and scored Swallow again, then Inman tripled to right field to score McCoy. Compton struck out but reached first on a passed ball, and Inman scored 4-1.
The Warriors returned to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth with three more runs to make it 4-4.
Marcotte got on and advanced to second on a wild pitch that scored Garrett Graef and gave the Scots a 5-4 lead. Hendrix, though, came back in the bottom half of the seventh to tie the game 5-5.
There were no more scoring plays until the top of the 12th.
Swallow was 2-for-6 with two runs scored and one walk, Marcotte was 0-for-5 with a run scored and two walks, McCoy was 2-for-5 with a run scored and two runs batted in to go with one walk, Inman was 3-for-7 with two runs scored and an RBI, Compton was 2-for-6 with one run scored, one RBI and one walk, Hendrix was 2-for-7, Logan Lightner went 1-for-4, Smith was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, and Andrew James went 2-for-6.
Hendrix and James each had doubles in the game, while McCoy had two triples, Swallow had a triple, and Inman had a triple. McCoy was also hit by a pitch.
Babcock started the game on the mound for the Scots and went six innings, gave up seven hits and four runs, walked three, and struck out five of the 28 batters he faced. Braden Anderson came in to pitch two innings and gave up two hits and one run and walked one. Conrad Muir relieved Anderson and went two innings, walked two, and struck out two batters. Then Jennings came in for the final two innings and allowed only one hit from the seven batters he faced.
The Scots had nine runs on 17 hits, while Hendrix got five on 10 hits and made two errors.
