Authorities are investigating after human remains were discovered in a wooded area in southwest Sharp County, officials said.
According to the Sharp County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call on March 19 regarding the discovery of a skull and vertebrae in a wooded area near a residence on Cougar Road. The remains were found uphill from a stream near Caney Creek, the incident report said.
A follow-up search of the property on March 26, conducted by authorities and a K9 team from Jonesboro, led to the discovery of additional bones.
Deputies learned that a burn-off had taken place on the property earlier in the month, and a portion of the skull appeared to have been burned from the fire.
The identity and sex of the victim remain unknown, officials said.
Evidence collected at the scene has been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory for further analysis.
