Vela Genell West, 91, of Jamestown, departed this life on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at her home. She was born in Batesville, Arkansas, on February 17, 1934, to Joseph Austin Wallis and Sarah Pitts Wallis.
Vela married Melvin Eugene West in June of 1953 and they celebrated over fifty-four years of marriage until his death in 2007.
Most of her family and friends lovingly called her “Genell” except for the grandchildren who called her “grandma”. During her working years she cared for many families as a caregiver. She was also an Avon lady for over twenty years.
Left to cherish her memory is her sons, Russell and Dennis West, of the home; her sisters, Jo Ann (Rob) West, of Ward, Arkansas, and Thelma (Barry) Blackwell, of Batesville; her grandchildren, Joshua James, Teiona, Dennis, Jr., Jared, Kalob, and Corey; great grandchildren, Madison, Kaliegh, Nevaeh, and Brianna; great grandchild, Dakota; nieces, nephews, and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her late husband, Melvin West; her daughter, Melba Eugenia West; her son, Alan Lee West; and her brothers, Carl, Doil, and David Wallis.
Funeral Service will be Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Doty Southside Funeral Service. Burial will follow in the Barnes Cemetery.
