Lyon College men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams compete at Bryan Phillips Invitational

SEARCY, Arkansas – The Lyon College men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams competed Sunday afternoon at the Bryan Phillips Invitational meet at Harding University.

The meeting was initially scheduled for Friday and Saturday, but severe weather and flooding rains caused the meeting to be delayed to Sunday afternoon.

Scots sweep SLIAC doubleheader from Eureka at ASU

JONESBORO, Arkansas – The Lyon College baseball Scots swept a SLIAC doubleheader against the visiting Eureka College Red Devils on Sunday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium on the campus of Arkansas State University.

The Scots (12-14, 3-5) won the first game 4-2 and took the second game 14-5.

In the first game, Eureka took a 2-0 lead, scoring runs on a balk and a triple. However, Lyon College returned to take a 4-2 advantage by the end of the first inning.

Eli Marcotte led off by beating out an infield single to second base. After two pick-off attempts failed to get Marcotte, Kooper McCoy blasted a 2-run homer over the left field fence to tie the game. Slade Inman followed with a single to left field, and Braden Bramlett walked. Ashton Compton put down a sacrifice bunt to move the two runners up a base, and with two outs, Braden Hendrix walked to load the diamond. Caleb Collings got a base hit to left field, bringing in Inman and Bramlett to make it 4-2.

Bramlett picked up another single in the bottom of the second with two outs and was left stranded on base. McCoy got a base hit to left field with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and went to second on a wild pitch but couldn’t advance anymore.

Bramlett led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to left, but an Eureka double-play stopped the Lyon College threat. In the bottom of the sixth, Hendrix led off with a single to center field and went to second on a ground out to second from Collins. Andrew James hit a deep fly ball to center field, and Hendrix moved to third base. McCoy drew a walk, but a ground out ended the inning.

Collins reached on a bunt single in the bottom of the eighth inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. James hit another deep fly to center field to move Collins to third base, and Marcotte drew a walk. Marcotte stole second, but a hard ground out to the shortstop ended the Scots’ threat.

Conrad Muir was the winning pitcher for Lyon College. He went seven complete innings and gave up seven hits and two runs. He walked one and struck out three of the 27 Eureka batters he faced.

Braden Anderson came for 1.1 innings, gave up two hits and no runs, walked two, and struck out one of the six batters he faced. Kenny Jennings got the save by pitching the final two outs of the game, which was a double-play turned by James and Compton.

In the second game, Eureka again took a 2-0 lead, and the Scots scored one run in the bottom half of the first. With one out, McCoy singled to center field, Inman was hit by a pitch, and McCoy stole second, but Inman was caught in a run-down for the second out. Bracelet singled to left field to bring in McCoy to make it 2-1. Compton singled up the middle, and he and Bramlett advanced up a base on a wild pitch, but a line out to shortstop ended the threat for more Lyon College runs.

The Red Devils added three more runs in the top half of the second inning to take a 5-1 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Collins walked but was the second out when James reached on a fielder’s choice. James went to second on a wild pitch, and Marcotte hit a 2-run homer over the left field wall to make it a 5-3 game.

The Scots tied the game in the bottom of the third inning. Inman led off with a single to third base, and with one out, Inman was caught in a run-down and tagged out. Compton singled to left side, then advanced to third when Landon Swallow doubled to left field. Hendrix singled to left field to bring in Compton and Swallow advanced to second on the throw to the plate, which missed Compton and tied the game 5-5.

Lyon College took a 4-run lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Marcotte and McCoy both walked. Inman beat out a bunt single to load the base, and Bramlett doubled down the left-field line to score all three runners. Bramlett advanced to third on the throw to the plate and scored on a balk. With two outs, Swallow was hit by a pitch and scored when Hendrix doubled to left-center field to make it 10-5.

Lyon College added another run in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Marcotte walked and advanced to third when McCoy doubled to left field. There was an overthrow to third base on the play, and Marcotte scored 11-5.

The Scots tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Logan Lightner reached on a fielder’s choice. A pitcher hit Hendrix, and James beat an infield single to load the bases. Lightner scored on a passed ball while the other two runners moved up. Marcotte walked, and McCoy singled to bring in Hendrix. Inman walked with the bases loaded to score James to make it 14-5

Patrick Babcock started on the mound for the Scots but gave up five hits and five runs to go with three strikeouts and one walk from the 12 batters he faced. Connor Taylor came in and pitched the remaining 7.1 innings to get the win. Taylor gave up five hits, no runs, and two walks and had seven strikeouts of 29 Eureka batters he faced.

The Scots will be in action again on Tuesday when they travel to Fulton, Missouri, for a SLIAC doubleheader with the Westminster College Blue Jays.

Scots baseball splits doubleheader with University of the Ozarks

CLARKSVILLE, Arkansas – The Lyon College Scots split a doubleheader with the University of the Ozark Eagles last Tuesday afternoon at Lonnie Qualls Field.

The Scots (10-14, 1-5) won the first game 14-2 and dropped the second game 3-2.

In the top of the first inning, Eli Marcotte doubled down the left field line to start the game but was left stranded at first base.

Ozarks homered in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Then Braden Bramlett singled up the middle in the top of the second, Andrew James walked, and Caleb Collins walked to load the bases with two outs, but the Scots did not score.

Kooper McCoy led off with a single through the left side in the top of the third inning. Slade Inman singled up the middle, and Ashton Compton got a base hit on left field to score McCoy. Landon Swallow reached on a fielder’s choice, and Braden Hendrix reached on a fielder’s choice, with the bases loaded and Inman getting out at the plate. With two outs, James walked to bring in Compton, Collins beat out a bunt single and scored Swallow, Marcotte walked to bring in Hendrix, and then McCoy singled to center field to score James and Collins. Inman followed with a double to right center to score Marcotte and McCoy for an 8-1 Lyon College lead.

The Scots added another run in the top of the fifth inning when Marcotte doubled to left field, a pitch hit McCoy, and Inman reached on a fielder’s choice. Compton hit a long sacrifice fly to center field to score Marcotte to make it a 9-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Bramlett singled to center field, James to right center, and Garrett Graef, who came into run for Bramlett, advanced to third. Collins singled to left field,d, and Graef scored. James and Collins moved up on a wild pitch, and then Marcotte singled to left field to score James. McCoy followed with a three-run homer to left field to bring in Collins and Marcotte and make it a 14-1 game.

The Eagles scored their second run in the bottom of the seventh.

Aiden Connolly was the winning pitcher for Lyon College. He went 6.0 innings and gave up two hits and one run while striking out five of 24 batters he faced. Alex Marsh came in to pitch one inning, gave up two hits and one run, and struck out one.

Marcotte led off with a walk in the second game, then stole second with one out. Inman singled through the right side to score Marcotte before a double-play ended the top half of the first inning with Lyon College leading 1-0.

Ozarks came back in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead.

Bramlett got a single in the second, Collins and McCoy got singles in the third, but the Eagles took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning.

Finally, at the top of the seventh inning, Collins singled to the left field with one out. Marcotte singled through the right side,e and McCoy walked to load the base. Inman singled to left field, and Collins scored, but Compton hit into a fielder’s choice, which got Marcotte out on the plate. A strikeout ended the game with the Scots trailing 3-2.

Scots lose SLIAC doubleheader at Webster

ST. LOUIS, Missouri – The Lyon College Scots baseball team dropped a SLIAC doubleheader at Webster on March 21, 10-3 and 8-1.

The Scots (9-13, 1-5) trailed 6-0 until the top of the eighth inning of Game 1. Walker Smith led off with a walk, Braden Hendrix singled through the left side, and Landon Swallow singled to left field to load the bases. Andrew James drew a walk after Webster changed pitchers to bring in Smith, and then Braden Bramlett singled to left field to bring in Hendrix. With two outs, Kooper McCoy singled to right field,d and Swallow scored to make it 6-3.

Webster scored four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead 10-3.

Patrick Babcock got the loss from the mound for the Scots. He pitched six innings and gave up eight hits and six runs, three unearned. He walked five of the 31 batters he faced. Connor Taylor came in to pitch one inning, gave up a run, and walked one. Parker Paschal pitched against one batter and gave up a run, then Braden Anderson pitched one inning and gave up two hits and two runs.

Webster led 3-0 in the second game until the top of the fifth inning. A pitch hit Swallow, then with one out, Garrett Graef reached first on an error. Eli Marcotte singled through the right side to score Swallow and advance Graef to second. Ashton Compton walked with two outs to load the bases, but a ground out ended the scoring threat for the Scots.

Webster scored five more runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 8-1.

Kenny Jennings suffered the loss for Lyon College. He pitched 0.1 innings and gave up three hits and three runs. Conrad Muir pitched 5.2 innings and gave up six hits and three runs while striking out two batters. Jonah Wilkerson came in for a 0.2 innings of work and gave up two hits and two runs. Tyler Campbell was the last Scots pitcher,r and he went 1.1 innings and did not give up a hit or a run.

Scots baseball splits doubleheader with Greenville

BATESVILLE, Arkansas – The Lyon College baseball Scots split a doubleheader with the Greenville Panthers in SLIAC action at Fred Wann Field last Tuesday.

The Scots (9-11, 1-3) lost the first game 13-3 but returned in the second game to win 5-1.

In the first game, Greenville held an 8-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning against Lyon College. A pitch hit Braden Bramlett, and then, with one out, Andrew James walked. Braden Hendrix hit a grounder too short to advance Bramlett and James. A pitch hit Kooper McCoy, and Eli Marcotte singled to left field to bring in Bramlett and James to make it 8-2.

After Greenville scored five more runs in the top of the seventh inning, the Scots tacked on another run when Walker Smith and Logan Lightner were both hit by pitches. James singled to left field with two outs to score Smith before the last out was recorded.

Blair Francis suffered the loss. He went 2.2 innings and gave up seven hits and five runs from the 15 batters he faced. Braden Anderson came in for 3.1 innings of work and gave up four hits and five runs, with one strikeout of the 17 batters he faced. James pitched for an inning and gave up three hits and three runs. He walked two of the eight batters he faced.

In the second game, Marcotte led off the bottom of the first inning with a double to left-center field and advanced to third on an errant throw. McCoy grounded out first, and Marcotte came in to score. With two outs, Slade Inman singled, stole second, and advanced to third on an overthrow. Inman scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 Scots.

Lyon College added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning when James led off with a double to left field and went to third base on a sacrifice grounder by Garrett Graef. With one out, James scored on a balk by the Greenville pitcher to make it 3-0.

Greenville scored a single run in the top of the sixth inning to make it a 3-1 game, but the Scots added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Hendrix beat out an infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Landon Swallow walked, and he and Hendrix moved up when Hendrix stole second. Hendrix scored on an overthrow to third base, and Swallow stole second base in the play.

With the score 4-1, James walked, Graef reached on a fielder’s choice that got Swallow out at third. James was thrown out trying to steal them,d and Graef stole second.

Marcotte followed with a single to score Graef to make it 5-1.

Aiden Connolly was the winning pitcher. He went 5.0 innings and gave up four hits and one run while striking out one of the 23 batters he faced. Conrad Muir pitched four innings and gave up one hit while striking out three of the 13 batters he faced.

Scots women’s golf places 10th at the Eagles Bluff tournament

BULLARD, Texas – The Lyon College women’s golf finished 10th in the Eagles Bluff Intercollegiate tournament at Eagles Bluff Golf Course last Tuesday.

The Scots finished the tournament with an overall score of 425.

Madison Robb led Lyon College with a 93 in round 2. She parred holes one, 12, 14 and 15.

Jesi Odom shot a 103 in round 2, Zoe Anderson shot a 10,4, and Keylee Lyons shot a 125.

Lyon College women’s golf 11th after round one at Eagles Bluff Intercollegiate tournament

BULLARD, Texas – The Lyon College women’s golf team is in 11th place at the Eagles Bluff Intercollegiate tournament at the Eagles Bluff Country Club in Bullard, Texas, hosted by LeTourneau University.

After round one, the Scots have a team total of 432.
Madison Robb led Lyon College with a 91 on the par 71 course. She parred holes one, five, 12, 1, 3, and 15 in round one.
Jesi Odom shot a 95 for the day. She parred hole numbers five and eight.

Keylee Lyons was third with a 117 and parred holes seven and 15.

Zoe Anderson shot a 129 for the Scots.

Scots finish 5th at the Eagles Bluff tournament

BULLARD, Texas – The Lyon College men’s golf team wrapped up the Eagles Bluff Intercollegiate Tournament at Eagles Bluff Country Club last Tuesday afternoon with a 303 in round three to finish in fifth place with a total score of 920.

Brooks Vangilder and John Blake Turner led the Scots in Round 3. Both shot a 75, Manav Perfecto shot a 76, Michael Winne shot a 77, Robert Hopper scored an 80, and Ryan Kriz shot an 81.

Turner shot even par for most of the front nine, parring holes 1 through 8. he parred 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, and 18 to finish with a 75.

Vangilder had a birdie on nine and 15 to help his cause. He parred one, four, six, seven, eight, 10, 12, 16, 17 and 18 to take a 75 on the day.

Perfecto birdied holes two and eight. He parred one, three, five, six, seven, 11, 12, 15, 16 and 18 to stay at 76.

Winne had a birdie on 12 and parred holes one, seven, eight, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18 to take a 77.

Hopper birdied hole four and parred one, two,o three, five, eight, 11, 12, 15, 16, and 17 to finish with an 80.

Kriz had a birdie on hole one. He parred five, six, nine, 10, 12, 13, 15 and 16. He finished with an 81.

Scots men’s golf in 6th place at Eagles Bluff Intercollegiate tournament

BULLARD, Texas – The Lyon College men’s golf team is in sixth place at the Eagles Bluff Intercollegiate Tournament at the Eagles Bluff Country Club in Bullard, Texas, last Monday.

The Scots shot a 312 in the first round and a 305 in round two to total 617, one stroke behind East Texas Baptist.

John Blake Turner led the first round for Lyon College with a 75 on the par 71 course.

Blake had a birdie on hole seven and parred holes two, three, four, five, six, eight, 11, 12, 13, 15, 17 and 18.

Ryan Kriz shot a 78. He had a birdie on hole eight t and parred holes two, four, six, 11 through 16 and 18.

Michael Winne also shot a 78 in the first round. He birdied six and seven while parring holes one, four, five, nine, 10 through 13, 15, 17 and 18.

Brooks Vangilder shot an 81. He birdied seven while parring holes one, two, three, five, six, eight, 11 through 16 and 18.

Robert Hopper shot an 84. He a birdie on four and a birdie on 12. He parred holes one, five, 11, 14 and 16.

Manav Perfecto finished round one with an 85. He parred seven, 11 through 14, and 17.

In round two, Perfecto led the Scots with a 74. He birdied six and 18. He parred holes one, two, three, four, and five, then parred eight and nine, 10, 11, 12, and 15.

Kriz was second with a 75. He birdied three and 12. He parred two, four through eight, 10, 13, 14 and 18.

Winne shot a 7,6, and he birdied hole two while parring one, three, four, five, six, eight, nine, 11, 12, 13, and 15.

Hopper shot an 80 and had three birdies. He birdied one, six and 15. He parred nine, 10, 11, 12 and 14.

Turner shot an 83 and parred one, eight, nine, 10, 13, 14, 16 and 18.

Vangilder shot an 84 and had three birdies. He birdied 11, 12 and 18. He parred one, five, 14 and 15.

Scots softball drops 12-1 five-inning game to Williams Baptist

BATESVILLE, Arkansas – The Lyon College Scots softball team fell behind early and never recovered in a 12-1 loss to the Williams Baptist University Eagles at Howard and Mary House Field last Tuesday afternoon.

The Scots (4-18, 0-2) trailed 3-0 after a controversial call on the game’s first hit. With a runner on first base, the second Eagles batter lined out to Brianna Morquecho at shortstop and doubled up the runner at first, but the field umpire over-ruled the play and said that Morquecho had trapped the ball and allowed both runners to stay on base. That set up a Williams Baptist three-run homer.

In the bottom of the first inning, Sophie Varela walked, and Anna Voth moved her to second on a sacrifice bunt. Varela stole second, and MK Duffield drew a walk. Skylar Foreman singled to left center to bring in Varela to make it 3-1. Both runners moved up on a passed ball, then Olivia Orf drew a walk to load the bases, but a fielder’s choice ended the scoring threat for Lyon College.

The Eagles scored two more runs in the top of the second and added four in the top of the fourth to lead 9-1.

Duffield doubled to center field with one out in the bottom of the third for the Scots, but she was left stranded at second after two strikeouts ended the inning.

Williams Baptist scored two more runs in the top of the fourth to go up 11-1.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Orf walked to lead off, but a 6-4-3 double-play cleared the bases. Onrie Bergman singled to center field and was left stranded on base after a pop-up to the second baseman.

The Eagles put up another run in the top of the fifth to lead 12-1.

Varela reached on an error in the bottom half of the fifth, but two strikeouts and a ground out ended the game.

The Scots return to SLIAC play on Friday with a double-header scheduled at Eureka College.

Lyon softball drops two games at MUW

COLUMBUS, Mississippi – The Lyon College softball Scots dropped a SLIAC doubleheader at Mississippi University for Women in Columbus on March 21, 4-2 and 7-0.

The Scots (4-17, 0-2) trailed 2-0 in the first game until the top of the fourth inning. Brianna Morquecho singled to center field and stole second base. Anna Voth singled through the left side to bring Morquecho to third. Voth stole second, and a pitch hit MK Duffield to load the bases with no outs. After a strike-out, Skylar Foreman hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Morquecho and make it a 2-1 lead.

MUW scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 4-1.

Morquecho singled at the top of the sixth and advanced to second on a throwing error. Voth hit a sacrifice grounder that moved Morquecho to third base. Duffield singled up the middle to score Morquecho, then a fielder’s choice, a walk by Foreman, and a strikeout ended the inning with the Scots trailing 4-2.

Georgia Holzer was the losing pitcher for Lyon College. She pitched 6.0 innings, allowed six hits and four runs (three of which were earned), and struck out one of the 26 batters she faced.

In the second game, Lyon College got only three hits and did not score.

Morquecho doubled down the right-field line in the top of the first inning.

Sophie Varela and Morquecho walked atop the third inning,g with Lyon trailing 1-0.

Foreman walked in the top of the fourth inning, and Duffield singled to right field in the top of the sixth inning with Lyon trailing 4-0.

By the top of the seventh inning, the Scots were trailing 7-0. Rebecca Rodriguez singled to the right field with one out, and Soni Beene walked.

Scots drop doubleheader at Mission University

OZARK, Missouri – The Lyon College softball Scots traveled to Mission University and played a doubleheader with the Patriots at the Ozark Mountain Sports Complex in Ozark on Wednesday, March 26.

The Scots (4-15) lost the first game 6-2 and the second game 7-5.

Mission led 3-0 in the first game by the bottom of the third inning. However, Anna Voth reached on an error in the top of the fourth inning, then MK Duffield singled to right field. With runners at first and second, Olivia Orf singled to right field to bring in Voth and make it a 3-1 game.

The Scots got another run in the top of the fifth inning when Soni Beene reached first on an error and advanced to second on the overthrow to first. Sophie Varela doubled to right field, and Beene scored to make it 3-2. Voth had a single, and later, Rebecca Rodrigues got on base with a hit.

Mission scored three more times in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead 6-2.

In the top of the seventh, Lyon College put together a threat. With two outs, Voth singled to left field, Duffield walked, and Orf reached on an error to load the bases, but a strike-out ended the game.

Georgia Holzer was the losing pitcher in the contest. She threw 6.0 innings and gave up 13 hits and six runs. She walked two and struck out one of the 30 batters she faced.

In the second game, Varela led off with a single to left field, and Voth sacrificed her to second. Varela went to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. Duffield doubled to left field, but she was left stranded at third base after a ground out and a fly out.

Mission came back to score three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Then, the Patriots added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning to lead 6-1.

Lyon College came back to cut the lead in half when Voth was hit by a pitch with one out, and that set up a 2-run homer from Duffield over the left-center field fence.

Skylar Foreman followed with a single to center field, and with two outs, Holzer reached first on an error. Both Foreman and Holzer moved up on a passed ball, and Rodriguez walked to load the bases. A fly ball caught in right field ended the top of the third with Mission leading 6-3.

The Scots closed the gap even more at the top of the fourth inning when Emily Martinez singled to the left field to lead off. Varela reached on an error, and Voth walked to load the bases. Duffield singled to left field to bring in Martinez, and Foreman hit a deep sacrifice fly ball to left field that scored Varela 6-5, but a ground out and a strikeout ended the threat.

Mission added another run in the bottom of the fifth to lead by two runs.

Madison DeRoussel suffered the loss for Lyon College. She pitched 1.2 innings and gave up eight hits and six runs of the 12 batters she faced. Sydney Lasher came in to pitch the remaining 4.1 innings and gave up only three hits and one run while striking out two of the 18 batters she faced.

Scots softball splits doubleheader with the University of the Ozarks

BATESVILLE, Arkansas – The Lyon College softball Scots split a non-conference doubleheader at Howard and Mary House Field against the University of the Ozarks Eagles last Tuesday afternoon, March 25.

The Scots (4-13) lost the first game 3-2 and won the second game 4-0.

In the first game, Rebecca Rodriguez hit a solo homer to left-center field to give Lyon College a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
Ozarks came back to score two runs in the top of the fourth inning and take the lead 2-1. The Eagles added another run in the top of the fifth inning to lead 3-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Brianna Morquecho led off by being hit by a pitch. Skylar Foreman hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Morquecho to second, then with two outs, Morquecho stole third base to set up a run-scoring single to left field by Rodriguez to make it 3-2.

The Scots threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning when Foreman singled with one out, and Soni Beene ran for her at first base. With two outs, Rodriguez reached first on an error, and Beene advanced to second. Beene stole third, but a strikeout ended the inning.

Georgia Holzer pitched the entire seven innings and gave up only five hits and three runs, one of which was earned. She had six strikeouts of the 32 batters she faced.

In the second game, Sophie Varela led off with a home run to right field to put the Scots up 1-0.

Lyon College added another run in the bottom of the third inning when Varela reached on an error and stole second base. Anna Voth advanced her to third base with a ground out to second, and MK Duffield doubled to the right-center field wall to score Varela and make it a 2-1 Scots lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Foreman reached on an error, Rodriguez singled to center field, and with one o, ut Beene singled to left field to load the bases. Varela hit an infield single to second, and Foreman scored. Voth hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Rodriguez to make it 4-0.

Reece Montgomery singled to left field after Beene had gotten on base with a base hit to left field in the bottom of the sixth, but neither scored.
