The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra’s Quapaw Quartet (pictured above) will perform a selection of classical music at Lyon College’s annual West Endowed Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 13, in the Bevens Music Room of the Brown Fine Arts Building, 2300 Highland Road.
Thanks to the generosity of former Lyon president Dan West and his wife, Sidney, who endowed the annual concert series, the event is free and open to the public.
The program will include Joseph Haydn’s “String Quartet Op. 20, No. 4 in D major,” featuring the movements “Allegro di molto,” “Un poco adagio affettuoso,” “Allegretto alla zingarese” and “Presto scherzando.”
The quartet will also perform Philip Glass’ “String Quartet No. 3 ‘Mishima,’” with selections including “1957 Award Montage,” “November 25 – Ichigaya,” “1934 – Grandmother and Kimitake,” “1962 – Body Building,” “Blood Oath” and “Mishima/Closing.”
The program will conclude with Darius Milhaud’s “String Quartet No. 1, Op. 5,” with movements “Rythmique,” “Intime contenu” and “Vif très rythmé.”
The Quapaw Quartet features Charlotte Crosmer and Meredith Maddox Hicks on violin, Timothy MacDuff on viola, and Travis Scharer on cello.
About the musicians
Hicks, a Nashville, Tennessee, native, joined the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra in 2002. She holds a master’s degree in music performance and completed doctoral work at Florida State University. Hicks has performed with the Memphis, Jacksonville, Naples and New World symphonies and currently teaches violin and viola at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She is also a member of Meshugga, Arkansas’ only Klezmer band.
Crosmer, an Arkansas native, began playing violin at age 4. She earned a Bachelor of Music in violin performance from the University of Central Arkansas and two master’s degrees—from the University of Michigan—in chamber music and violin performance. She has been a member of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra since 2009.
MacDuff discovered his passion for chamber music at the New England Music Camp in Maine and has played with ensembles such as the Anacostia String Quartet and Loon Lake Live. He joined the Quapaw Quartet in 2019 and has performed with the National Repertory Orchestra, the National Orchestral Institute Philharmonic and the Texas Festival Orchestra at Round Top. He is also an experienced music educator.
Scharer, originally from Salem, Oregon, studied at Indiana University and the New England Conservatory. He has participated in festivals including the Marrowstone Music Festival and the Meadowmount School of Music. He joined the Arkansas Symphony and the Quapaw Quartet for the 2023–24 season.
Formed in 1980, the Quapaw Quartet is the resident string quartet of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and provides musical outreach and performances across the state. From educational programs to public recitals, the group is recognized as a cultural treasure in Arkansas.
The Dan C. and Sidney Childs West String Endowment was established in May 1981 to promote live string music performances and instruction at Lyon College. Since its founding, the endowment has supported free concerts by numerous distinguished ensembles. Dan West served as president of Lyon College—then Arkansas College—from 1972 to 1988.
