
Scots split SLIAC doubleheader at Westminster
FULTON, Mo. – The Lyon College baseball Scots split a doubleheader with the Westminster Blue Jays in SLIAC action last Tuesday afternoon.
The Scots (13-15, 4-6) won the first game 9-5 and lost the second 16-6.
With Westminster leading 2-0 in the first game, Lyon College scored when Slade Inman hit a sacrifice fly to score Caleb Collins. Braden Bramlett singled in Eli Marcotte, and Ashton Compton scored Kooper McCoy in the top of the third inning to put the Scots up 3-2.
Westminster came back to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third and took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth, McCoy grounded out to second base with the bases loaded to score Collins, then Inman singled in Andrew James to give Lyon College a 5-4 lead.
In the top of the seventh inning, with bases loaded, Marcotte walked to bring in Braden Hendrix to make it 6-4. In the eighth, Landon Swallow grounded out with the bases loaded to bring in Misael Santiago for a 7-4 lead.
Westminster picked up a run in the bottom of the eighth, but the Scots rallied for two more runs in the top of the ninth when McCoy walked with the bases loaded to bring Colling, and Logan Lightner hit a sacrifice fly to center field that brought in James to make it 9-5.
Aiden Connolly picked up the win for the Scots on the mound. He went 6.0 full innings and gave up three hits and four runs while striking out four of the 27 batters he faced. Braden Anderson pitched 1.1. innings and gave up two hits and one run from the seven batters he faced. Then Kenny Jennings came on for the save by pitching 1.2 innings. He gave up only one hit to the seven batters he faced.
In the second game, the Scots took a 2-0 lead when Andrew James walked in the top of the second inning with the bases loaded to bring in Hendrix. Afterward, James advanced to second on a wild pitch, allowing Collins to score.
Westminster came back to score five runs in the bottom of the second and added eight runs in the bottom of the third to lead 13-2.
Marcotte hit a two-run homer for the Scots in the top of the fourth inning, scoring Collins as well, and made it a 13-4 game.
Westminster added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 15-4.
In the top of the fifth, Hendrix singled to bring in Bramlett and Lightner, who walked with bases loaded to score Compton and cut the score to 15-6.
Westminster added another run in the bottom of the seventh inning to win by 10.
Blair Francis suffered the loss for Lyon College, giving up three hits and five runs, walking two, and striking out two of the 10 batters he faced. Jonah Wilkerson pitched 0.2 innings, gave up a hit and two runs, and walked two of the five batters he faced. Tyler Campbell came in to pitch, allowed a hit, three runs, and walked one of the three batters he faced. Swallow came in for 0.2 innings, gave up two hits and three runs, walked on, and struck out one batter of the five he faced. Joe Galay came in for 0.1 innings and gave up one hit and two runs. He walked two of the four batters he faced. Parker Paschal was the last pitcher for the Scots, and he went 3.2 innings, gave up five hits and one run, walked on,e and struck out two of the 17 batters he faced.
The Scots will be at home for a doubleheader against Fontbonne on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
Scots softball sweeps SLIAC doubleheader at Eureka College
EUREKA, Ill. – The Lyon College softball Scots swept a SLIAC doubleheader from Eureka College on a cold and blustery last Wednesday afternoon.
The Scots (6-18, 2-2) won the first game 6-1 and run-ruled Eureka 12-2 in a five-inning second game.
In the first game, Eureka held a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but in the top of the second, Ohnrie Bergman put down a sacrifice bunt to score Brianna Morquecho and tie the game at 1-1.
In the top of the third, Olivia Orf singled to right center to score Anna Voth to give the Scots a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth, MK Duffield singled through the right side to score Sophie Varela; then Orf hit a two-run homer to center field that scored pinch-runner Gabby Thomas. Skylar Foreman grounded out to second, but Ashley Able scored on the play to make it 6-1.
Sydney Lasher was the winning pitcher. She went seven full innings and gave up four hits and one unearned run. She walked two and struck out eight of 26 batters she faced.
In the second game, Lyon College started with six runs in the top of the first inning.
Varela walked to lead off and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Varela stole third base, and Anna Voth walked. Voth advanced on a wild pitch, and Varela scored on the play for a 1-0 lead. Duffield drew a walk, then Voth scored when Orf grounded out. Duffield went to third on a wild pitch, and Abel lined out second base for the second out. Morquecho walked and advanced to second on a passed ball, then Foreman walked. Morquecho and Foreman stole up a base, and Duffield stole home to make it 3-0. After that, Bergman singled to left field to score Morquecho, and Foreman and Bergman advanced to second on the throw to home plate. Fallon Lancaster singled to center field to bring in Bergman for a 6-0 Scots lead.
Voth led off with a double to left field in the top of the second. Duffield followed with a single up the middle to bring Voth home for a 7-0 lead.
Eureka scored a run in the bottom of the third, but the Scots answered in the top of the fourth inning. Varela led off with a single up the middle. Voth put down a sacrifice bunt, and Duffield doubled to left center field to score Varela. Orf flew out to center field, and Duffield advanced to third base, then Abel singled through the left side to score Duffield to make it 9-1.
At the top of the fifth, Kennedy Cox singled to left field, Reece Montgomery to left field, and Emily Martinez to left field to load the bases. Rebecca Rodriguez doubled to left field to bring in Cox and Montgomery. Duffield hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Martinez and advance Rodriguez to third base, then Orf hit a fielder’s choice that got Rodriguez out at the plate, but the Scots led 12-1.
Eureka got one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the game ended with the run-rule on the last out.
Georgia Holzer was the winning pitcher for Lyon College. She went five innings, gave up five hits and two runs, walked one, and struck out three of the 21 batters she faced.
Scots softball drops two games at Greenville
GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Lyon College softball Scots lost a doubleheader at Greenville on Thursday afternoon.
The Scots (6-20, 2-4) lost the first game 6-0 and led most of the second game, but lost 4-3.
In the first game, MK Duffield had a single to left field in the top of the fourth inning. Greenville scored three runs in the bottom of the first to lead 3-0.
In the top of the second, Rebecca Rodriguez singled to center field, and Brianna Morquecho singled to left field, but a ground and a double play just got Rodriguez at the plate, even though her hand was on the bag at the time of the call.
Greenville scored three more runs in the bottom of the second to lead 6-0.
Anna Voth had a single for the Scots at the top of the third inning but was left stranded on base. Voth doubled to the right field at the top of the sixth but was stranded on base again.
Rodriguez singled to center field at the top of the seventh, and Skylar Foreman drew a walk, but a pop-out and two strike-outs ended the game.
Georgia Holzer started the game in the circle for Lyon College and suffered the loss. She pitched 1.1 innings, gave up five hits six runs, and walked two batters of the 11 she faced.
Sydney Lasher came in to pitch 4.2 innings and gave up two hits, no runs, two walks, and two strikeouts in the 18 batters she faced.
In Game 2, Sophie Varela led off the top of the first inning with a single to right-center field. Voth put down a sacrifice bunt, and Duffield singled. Olivia Orf singled to right field to bring in Varela, and Morquecho put down a sacrifice bunt to move Duffield to third base. Rodriguez singled to right field,d and Duffield scored. Foreman singled to right field, and Orf scored to make it 3-0 Scots.
At the top of the second, Varela singled to center field, Voth to right field, and Duffield singled down the right field line to load the bases with one out. Two strikeouts ended the Lyon College threat.
In the top of the third, Foreman doubled to right-center field but was left stranded.
Greenville scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game.
In the top of the fifth, Orf led off with a walk, and with one out, Rodriguez singled to right field to advance pinch-runner Gabby Thomas to third base. However, a double play ended the Scots threat there.
Greenville scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead 4-3.
In the top of the sixth, with one out, Fallon Lancaster walked, and Varela singled to right field, but a flyout and a strikeout ended the Scots half of the sixth.
Lyon College went down in order in the top of the seventh to end the game.
Madison DeRoussel suffered the loss from the circle. She pitched six complete innings and gave up nine hits and four runs, three of which were earned runs.
Scots split doubleheader with Webster at Howard and Mary House Field
The Lyon College Scots softball split a SLIAC doubleheader with Webster on Saturday afternoon at Howard & Mary House Field in Batesville.
The Scots (7-21 and 3-5) won the first game 6-2 and lost the second game 9-1 against Webster.
Lyon College fell behind 1-0 after the top of the first inning but rebounded in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Soni Beene walked to lead off, and then Sophie Varela put down a sacrifice bunt to advance Beene to second. Anna Vothe put down a sacrifice bunt to move Beene to third base, then MK Duffield drew a walk and stole second base. Olivia Orf tripled in Beene and Duffield and scored on an error by the Webster left fielder. Brianna Morquecho followed with a single and stole second, but a ground out ended the inning with the Scots up 3-1.
Ohnrie Bergman led off with a walk in the bottom of the fourth, and Georgia Holzer laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Bergman to second, but Bergman was stranded at second base.
Voth walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning and advanced to second on a ground out but was left on base.
The Scots scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, Holzer doubled up the middle, and Beene singled through the right side to score Holzer for a 4-1 lead. Then Varela doubled, and Beene advanced to third base. Voth doubled down the right field line to bring in Beene and Varela to make it 6-1.
Webster added a run in the top of the seventh and ended the game on a pop-up to center field.
Holzer was the winning pitcher for the Scots. She went the entire seven innings and allowed nine hits, two runs, and one walk while striking out seven of the 30 batters she faced.
In the second game, the Scots only got four hits and scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Fallon Lancaster had a hit in the bottom of the second inning but was left on base. Duffield singled in the bottom of the sixth but was thrown out trying to get to second.
In the bottom of the seventh, Skylar Foreman reached first on an error and stole second base. Bergman singled, and Foreman went to third base. Lancaster hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Foreman, and then Ashley Abel singled.
Varela walked to load the bases, but a pop-out to the center fielder ended the game.
Sydney Lasher suffered the loss for the Scots. She went 4.2 innings, allowed five hits and four runs, walked three, and struck out one of the 21 batters she faced.
Madison DeRoussel pitched for 2.1 innings and allowed five hits and five runs of the 12 batters she faced.
Scots split doubleheader with Westminster College
The Lyon College softball Scots split a SLIAC doubleheader with the Westminster Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon at Howard and Mary House Field in Batesville.
The Scots (8-22, 4-6) lost the first game 4-0, but a grand slam home run from MK Duffield highlighted a 15-6 win for Lyon College in Game 2.
In the first game, the Scots only got five hits and were shut out by Westminster pitching. Ohnrie Bergman had two hits, while Sophie Varela, Skylar Foreman, and Georgia Holzer had one in each loss.
Holzer was the losing pitcher. She went seven innings and gave up seven hits and four runs while striking out six batters.
In the second game, the Scots scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Varela led off by reaching first on an error. Anna Voth beat out an infield single and advanced Varela to second. Varela was caught stealing third, and Duffield drew a walk. Foreman reached on a fielder’s choice that got Voth out at third base, but Holzer singled to left field and loaded up the bases.
Rebecca Rodriguez walked to bring in Duffield, Olivia Orf walked to score Foreman, and Bergman doubled to center field to bring in Holzer and Rodriguez for a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Varela led off with a double to left field. With one out, Duffield singled to center, and Foreman followed with a double off the fence in center field to score Varela. With two outs, Rodriguez walked again, and Orf doubled to center field to score Duffield and Foreman.
Bergman singled to center field to score Rodriguez and Orf to make it a 9-0 lead for Lyon College.
In the bottom of the third, Varela led off with a single to left field. Voth advanced her with a sacrifice bunt, and Varela stole third base. Foreman singled to left field to score Varela and make it a 10-0 Scots lead.
Westminster scored four times in the top of the fourth inning.
But Lyon College added five more runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 15-4.
With two outs, Bergman doubled to left center field, Ashley Abel singled to left center field, and Varela walked. Reece Montgomery drew a bases-loaded walk to score Bergman, and that set up a grand slam home run over the right field fence by Duffield that scored 15-4.
Foreman followed with a single to right center, and Holzer got a base hit.
A pitch hit Rodriguez to re-load the bases, but a pop-out ended the inning.
Westminster added two runs in the top of the fifth inning, but the run rule ended the game for the Scots.
Sydney Lasher was the winning pitcher for Lyon College. She went five innings and gave up five hits and six runs while striking out one.
The Scots will be on the road next week to Fontbonne on Friday, April 18, to Blackburn College on Saturday, April 19, and to Hendrix College on April 21.
Lyon College returns home to Howard and Mary House field on April 26 for a doubleheader with Principia College.
Scots defeat Fontbonne in doubleheader at Fred Wann Field
The Lyon College Scots baseball team swept a SLIAC doubleheader against the Fontbonne Griffins on Saturday afternoon at Fred Wann Field.
The Scots (15-15, 6-6) won the first game 8-7 and defeated the Griffins in seven innings in the second game 12-2.
In Game 1, Fontbonne took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but the Scots tied the score in the bottom half of the second. With two outs, Landon Swallon reached first on an error, and Ashton Compton singled up the middle. Swallow advanced to third on the hit, but a throwing error by the Griffins allowed him to score.
Fontbonne scored three times in the top of the fourth inning to go up 4-1, but the Scots answered with four runs in the bottom half of the fourth.
Braden Bramlett led off with a single to center field, Braden Hendrix beat out an infield hit, and Caleb Collins reached on an error that allowed Bramlett and Hendrix to score. Swallow doubled to left center field to bring in Collins to tie the game at 4-4. Compton put down a sacrifice bunt to move Swallow to third. Andrew James reached on a fielder’s choice that got Swallow out at the plate. James advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Eli Marcotte doubled to center field to bring in James for a 5-4 lead.
Lyon College added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Kooper McCoy led off with a solo homer to make it 6-4.
Fontbonne scored in the top of the sixth to close the Scots lead to one run, but in the bottom of the sixth, Marcotte homered to left-center field to make it 7-5.
The Griffins tied the game in the top of the ninth inning with two runs.
In the bottom of the ninth, McCoy singled up the middle, Logan Lightner walked, Hendrix reached on an error to load the bases, and then Collins hit a walk-off single to left field to score McCoy and end the game.
Kenny Jennings picked up the win for the Scots by pitching the final out of the top of the ninth inning.
Conrad Muier started the game in 3.2 innings and allowed three hits and four runs.
Connor Taylor came in to pitch four innings and allowed two hits and one run while striking out seven. Braden Anderson pitched an inning and gave up two runs.
In the second game, Fontbonne took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Scots came back with Marcotte taking a lead-off walk. Hendrix put down a sacrifice bunt, and McCoy doubled to right-center. Bramlett walked to load the bases, setting up Compton’s triple to right-center field that scored Marcotte, McCoy, and Bramlett for a 3-2 lead. Slade Inman reached on an error, and Compton scored. Inman stole second, and Swallow hit a homer run to bring in two more runs to make it 6-2.
Lyon College added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a three-run homer by McCoy.
In the bottom of the fifth, Hendrix singled to left field with two outs, then stole second base. McCoy singled to left field, and Hendrix scored on the play. Bramlett doubled down the left field line to bring in McCoy, and Bramlett advanced to third on a wild pitch. Compton singled to right field to score Bramlett for a 12-2 Scots lead.
A double-play in the top of the seventh ended the game for the Scots.
Patrick Babcock picked up the win for Lyon College. He pitched 3.2 innings and gave up four hits and two runs while striking out four. Tyler Davis came in to pitch 3.1 innings and struck out three batters while not allowing a single run or hit.
Lyon College will be in action on Tuesday, April 15, at Fred Wann Field in a double-header with Champion Christian beginning at 2 p.m.
Scots men’s and women’s track and field teams compete at UALR
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Lyon College Scots men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams competed in Day 2 of the UALR Invitational at Coleman Field in Little Rock.

Lyon College men’s golf places seventh out of 10 at SU Preview
EDINBURGH, Ind. – The Lyon College men’s golf team placed seventh after the first day of the Spalding University Preview at Timberlake Golf Course after Saturday’s first-round
Lyon shot a 305 as a team on Saturday.
John Blake Turner shot a 78. He birdied hole 7 and hole 13. He had pars on 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15 and 16 on the day.
Michael Winner shot a 78. He birdied holes 7 and 11. He parred 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 13, 14, 15 and 17.
Ryan Kriz shot a 75. He birdied holes 6, 7 and 17. He parred holes 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, and 16.
Brooks Vangilder shot a 74. He birdied holes 4 and 10. He parred holes 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18.
Manav Perfecto shot a 78. He birdied holes 1 and 7. He parred holes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 16.
The Lyon College men’s golf team placed seventh out of 10 teams at the Spalding University Preview at Timberlake Golf Course tournament on Sunday afternoon.
The Scots shot a 2-day total of 603 after coming in with 301 as a team in round 2.
John Blake Turner shot a 78 in round 2 and parred holes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16 and 18.
Michael Winne birdied hole one and finished with a 78 on the day. He parred holes 2, 3, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 17 and 18.
Ryan Kritz shot an 80 in round 2. He had a birdie on hole 16 and parred holes 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12, 13, and 18.
Brooks Vangilder shot a one-under 71 to lead the Scots in round 2. Vangilder birdied holes 2, 6, and 17. He parred 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16 and 18.
Manav Perfecto shot an 84 on the second day. He birdied holes 2 and 13 while parring holes 1, 6, 9, 10, and 14.
Lyon College women’s golf finishes 6th at SU Preview at Timberlake
EDINBURGH, Ind. – The Lyon College women’s golf team is ranked sixth after the first round of the Spalding University Preview at Timberlake Golf Course on Saturday.
The Scots shot a 410 as a team in Round 1.
Madison Robb shot a 91 on the first day and parred holes 2, 4, 11, 14 and 18.
Jesi Odom shot a 91 and parred holes 2, 5, 7, 10 and 11.
Zoe Anderson shot a 107 for the day.
Keylee Lyon shot a 121 and parred hole number 14.
