The White River Literacy Council (WRLC) recently recognized outstanding achievements in literacy at its annual Celebrate Literacy event.
Students who participated in the council’s writing competition were honored for their essays, each reflecting on a favorite song and describing its personal impact. In addition to student winners, WRLC also recognized several community members for their contributions to literacy efforts.

Becky Wood (pictured above, right, with WRLC’s Kerri Grace) was named Community Person of the Year, while White River Now and Chad Whiteaker (pictured below, left, with David Ward) received the Business of the Year award.

Tammy Gilmore (pictured above, right, with WRLC’s Kathy Walter) was honored as Educator of the Year, and Sonya Gaither and Tina Baker were both recognized as Administrators of the Year.
Four WRLC student winners advanced to the state level and earned additional honors in their respective categories. Student writers Hanna and Aria will be recognized by the Arkansas Literacy Association (ALA) on May 3.
Additionally, Gilmore and Baker will be honored by ALA as Educator and Administrator of the Year, respectively, during a luncheon on July 14 at Harding University.
WRLC officials expressed their gratitude to all attendees and supporters who continue to promote literacy across Independence County.
