The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra’s Quapaw Quartet will perform a selection of classical music in Lyon College’s annual West Endowed Concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, in the Bevens Music Room of the Brown Fine Arts Building on the Lyon College campus, 2300 Highland Rd., in Batesville.
Thanks to the generosity of former Lyon president Dan West and his wife, Sidney, who endowed an annual classical music performance, there is no charge to attend, the college noted in a release announcing the performance.
Founded in 1980 as the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra’s resident string quartet, the Quapaw Quartet provides musical and educational entertainment to thousands of music lovers each year. From school programs to full-length recitals, the Quapaw Quartet is considered an Arkansas treasure, the release said.
A highlight of the quartet’s performance will be “Five Folksongs in Counterpoint” by Arkansas-born composer Florence Price, the first African American woman to have her music performed by a major symphony orchestra.
The program also includes “String Quartet in D minor, Op. 56, ‘Voces Intimae’” by Jean Sibelius and “Attaboy” from Goat Rodeo Sessions, arranged by Charlotte Crosmer.
The recital will feature Tim MacDuff on violin, Meredith Maddox Hicks on violin, Charlotte Crosmer on violin, and Chava Appiah on cello.
The Dan C. and Sidney Childs West String Endowment was established by the Wests in May 1981 for the purpose of offering live musical performances or stringed instrument instruction at Lyon College. The West String Endowment has supported free concerts on campus by many fine ensembles. Dan West was president of Lyon College — then Arkansas College — from 1972 to 1988.
