Drowning victim identified as Jacksonville man

Authorities have released the identification of a man who drowned in the White River near Lock and Dam 1 Friday evening.

According to Independence County Sheriff Shawn Stephens, Eric Edwards, 47, of Jacksonville, died while attempting to rescue his son, who had fallen into the river from a boat. Another man was able to grab hold of the child and pull him to safety. Edwards never resurfaced. His body was found an hour later.

Vital Link EMS, the Batesville Police Department, the Independence County Sheriff’s Department, and Batesville Fire Department all responded in the search for Edwards.
