A red Camaro was driven through the Pleasant Plains area last Saturday at very high speeds when Pleasant Plains Police Officer Chris Morris spotted it on radar at well above 76 mph in a 65 mph zone.
According to Independence County Circuit Court information, when Morris tried to initiate a traffic stop, the Camaro allegedly sped up and fled south on Highway 167.
In his report, Morris said he reached a speed of 120 mph in his pursuit of the Camaro. Morris said, on curves, the Camaro would cross into the turning lane, and sometimes into the oncoming traffic lane.
When the pursued vehicle entered Bald Knob, the police department there took the lead in the chase, got the vehicle stopped, and identified the Camaro driver as Alex Hernandez, 19.
The court information said that when asked why he ran from the police, he replied that he didn’t want to go to jail, and he didn’t have a driver’s license.
To make matters worse, Hernandez had a minor passenger in his vehicle who was later released to his father. The Camaro was towed, and Hernandez was taken to the Independence County Jail, where he was placed on a hold for felony fleeing.
Hernandez’s bond was set at $10,000.
