Southside Southerner volleyball outside hitter Lilly Swanson (pictured) is a force to be reckoned with on the volleyball court.
As she and the Southerners approached postseason play in her senior season, she was approaching a benchmark few attain: 1,000 career kills.
The simple definition of a kill is an offensive attack that is un-returnable by the opponent and scores a point or side out for that offensive team.
Swanson began her high school career at Diller-Odell High School in Odell, Neb. While there, she collected 107 kills and a state title in her freshman season. Swanson then racked up another 257 kills in her sophomore season.
Prior to junior season, Swanson moved to Arkansas, where she attends Southside Charter High School. In her junior year at Southside, the Southerners finished a highly successful season, and Swanson amassed another 303 kills.
During her senior season, Swanson reached her 1000th kill during the first round of the 4A state tournament at Shiloh Christian Academy, where the Southerners fell to No. 1 seed Mena.
Swanson was recognized for reaching 1,000 kills on Monday, Oct. 30, 2023, at the Southside Blue and Gold basketball game.
