Dorothy L. Smith, 93, of Newport, gracefully passed away on December 7, 2023. Born on February 8, 1930, to Victory L. and Lucynthia (Corter) Nelson, Dorothy’s life was a tapestry of community, creativity, and service. Dorothy was a member of the First Baptist Church in Newport. She was also a big part of the Business and Professional Women organization, dedicating her time to working events and planning parties for them. Dorothy’s artistic spirit flourished in her love for painting and ceramics, particularly Santa’s and nativity scenes. She had a love for flowers and loved working in her flower beds. Known for her generosity, she often baked cookies for the police and fire departments. Dorothy found joy in family reunions and served as the head cashier at Kroger for over 30 years, leaving an enduring legacy of faith, creativity, and unwavering dedication to her Kroger family and others.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, J.A. Smith; her brothers, Bill Nelson, Dean Nelson, Victory Nelson Jr.; her sisters, Rita Bullard and Virginia Moody.
She is survived by her daughter, Vickie Treadway (Robert) of Cottleville, Missouri; her grandchildren, Angela Decker (Jason) and Zachary Treadway (Mandy); her great-grandchildren, Katherine Decker, Natalie Decker, Eleanor Treadway, and Oliver Treadway; and special friends, Clara Nelson and Shirl Nelson.
Service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 11, 2023, at Dillinger Funeral Home Chapel.
