Southside Middle School (SMS) was recently designated to become a Heart Safe School through Project Adam.
Project Adam is an organization that assists schools and communities in establishing a practiced plan to respond to a sudden cardiac arrest.
Through the leadership of the SMS school nurse, Brooklyn Hatfield, a response team was formed. The team and other building members went through extensive training, including CPR training. Once training was completed, the school practiced its response to a medical emergency using the protocols in place.
In a release, the district said the designation “…is very important so that we are proactive should a medical emergency arise on our campus. Being prepared is our best tool in keeping our students safe.”
