The Alzheimer’s Association has announced a new support group for caregivers of those living with dementia is now available in Independence County.

The Arkansas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association has formed a Batesville Caregiver Support Group, which will meet on the second Thursday of each month at White River Health — Conference Room A in Batesville. The meetings for family, friends, and caregivers who care for someone living with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia will be at 5 p.m. and led by local facilitator Deanna Green.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, there are currently 60,400 people 65 and older living with the disease and 155,000 family and friends serving as caregivers in Arkansas.

In Independence County, there is an estimated 11% Alzheimer’s disease prevalence rate in those over 65. This equates to an estimated 700 individuals in the county.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the demands of being an Alzheimer’s caregiver are all-encompassing and increase over time as the disease progresses. The support group can help caregivers, friends, and family members impacted by dementia.

Alzheimer’s Association support groups are conducted by trained facilitators. They aim to allow participants to develop a support system and exchange practical information on challenges and possible solutions. The groups also allow an opportunity to talk through issues, discuss ways of coping, and share feelings of needs and concerns. Group members also learn about community resources that can help them in their caregiving role.
