The Southside City Council took up the issue of zoning at their regular monthly meeting Tuesday night.
The city began discussing zoning over a year ago, and the council passed the zoning ordinance at Tuesday’s meeting. (The Official Zoning Map for Southside is shown below.)
Mayor Ray Bowman stated that the intent of the zoning is to “protect, not to intrude.”
The delineations include sections for agriculture, residential estate, low-density residential, medium-density residential, high-density residential, neighborhood commercial, and general commercial zones. The zoning laws will take effect 30 days after posting, which the mayor said will be in mid-July.
In other business, councilmen Jerry Byrd and Vince Gay announced their departure from the city council. Both men expressed pride in the work and progress made but cited age and health concerns as reasons for stepping down. The four-year terms for both councilmen would have ended at the end of 2024.
The council noted that the filing period for interested candidates opens on July 31.
