Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has called state lawmakers into a special session to cut income taxes for the second time in nine months.
The session, which began Monday, is also needed to pass the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s budget after a previous failure over salary disputes.
Senate Bill 1 aims to lower the top corporate tax rate from 4.8% to 4.3% and the top individual rate from 4.4% to 3.9%, reducing state revenue by over $480 million in fiscal year 2025.
Democrats, led by House Minority Leader Rep. Andrew Collins, oppose the bill, arguing it favors the wealthy over addressing urgent state needs.
Lawmakers expect the special session to be “fairly quick” since tax cuts and the Game and Fish Commission appropriation are the only issues at hand.
