A tractor-trailer snagged the wires on a utility pole in Batesville late Tuesday afternoon, knocking out power in the area of Lawrence and River streets. Images from the scene provided by Independence County Judge Kevin Jeffery show the utility pole at the intersection tilted toward the road, with power wires stretched and tangled around the semi.
As of 6:30 p.m., a White River Now reader reported traffic around the accident remained blocked.
Jeffery told White River Now that authorities are on the scene, and crews will set a new pole once the gas lines are marked. No one was injured in the incident, and the truck was marked clear of any hazard.
According to Entergy Arkansas, around 39 customers were still without power in the area at 6:45 p.m. The accident, which was reported around 5:30 p.m., occurred in front of the Whistle Stop Cafe, where power was immediately cut. The restaurant noted on its Facebook page it hoped to be back open by Wednesday morning. Nearby businesses He Delivers and Earthly Treasures at the Broad and East Boswell intersection also announced an early closing on Tuesday due to the accident.
