Scots men’s soccer falls to Spalding

LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The Lyon College Scots men’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at Spalding University on Thursday night in Louisville, Ky.

The Scots (3-5-2,1-1-0) fell behind 2-0 in the second half after Spalding scored goals in the 60th and 80th minutes, but Erik Oliveira connected on a kick into the net at the 86:14 mark with an assist by Traviss Ragan, but Lyon College ran out of time.

Lyon had 12 shots and three on-goal kicks. Oliveira had two shots and one on goal that he scored. Matheus Nunes had four shots and one on-goal. Ragan had one shot, as did Lucca Torres Gustavo Giesbrecht, and Luca Cirigliano. Tiago Donadon had two shots at the goal and one on-goal kick.

The Scots goalie, Gabriel Rangel, had three saves.

Scots tie Spalding in SLIAC women’s soccer action in Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Lyon College women’s soccer Scots got a second-half goal from Allison Byars to tie the Golden Eagles of Spalding 1-1 on Thursday afternoon in SLIAC action in Kentucky.

Byars’s goal came in the 67th minute on an assist by Emma Rumore. Byars headed in Rumore’s corner kick to make it a 1-1 game. But that was just half of the story. Cave City’s Jessie Stauffer had 11 saves as the Scots goalie on 12 on-goal kicks by Spalding.

Defensively, Lyon College (2-4-2, 1-0-1) stopped 29 shots at the goal from the Golden Eagles with a solid line led by Emily Betzold, Nataly Furne, and Byars. Katelyn Balderas, Lauren Couture, Mikayla Neveloff, Rumore, Jessica Steele, Millie Beller, and Zoe Papazoglou kept Spalding off balance and took away shot attempts at key times during the match.

It was a breakaway from Neveloff and Rumore that set up a corner kick for the Scots that Byars netted for the tie.

Furne and Byars had the only two shots for Lyon College.
Bethanny Moore came in to play defense, Angela Penaflor was in the midfield, Maggie McCollum played defense, while Hanna Kara Birgisdottir, Natalie Wyatt and Emilee Simpson came in to relieve midfielders.

Third set comeback completes sweep for Scots volleyball against MUW

BATESVILLE, Ark. — In the lone home event for Lyon College athletics this week, Scots volleyball sweeps Mississippi University for Women at Becknell Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

The Scots (11-3, 5-2) dominated the Owls (2-9, 0-5) in the first two sets by final scores of 25-17 and 25-18, respectively. The Owls started the third set strong, leading the Scots by as much as seven points at one time. However, a late comeback by the Scots propelled them into a 3-0 victory as they finished the final set by a score of 25-22.

Senior outside hitter Kylee Sabella had yet another phenomenal performance for the Scots, leading the team in kills (9), aces (4), and tying with senior middle blocker Mikhayla Wright in total blocks (2). Junior setter Madeline Hopson led the Scots in assists with 15 in total. Sophomore defensive specialist Olivia Locke also had a stellar performance, leading the Scots with 19 digs while also putting up six assists and an ace.

The Scots will return to action tonight at 7 p.m. when they continue SLIAC play at Greenville University. The Scots will not return to Becknell Gymnasium until Friday, Oct. 18, when they host Fontbonne University and Westminster College for a SLIAC conference tri-match.
