Breadcrumbs, an exhibition by Little Rock artist SLUGKNIVES, is currently at the BAAC Gallery on Main, 226 E. Main St. The event is presented by the Batesville Area Arts Council (BAAC) and sponsored by First Community Bank.
According to a release from BAAC, SLUGKNIVES (Jenna Jones) portrays insects, slugs, worms, and other crawling creatures interacting with their surroundings in vibrant colors. Using a jigsaw and scroll saw to shape wood into slugs and worms, she grants them their own personalities. Her inspiration for this project comes from children’s books, field guides, and her love for Halloween.
In the release, SLIUGKNIVES describes the show: “The darkening woods entice you to enter. Bring a flashlight, a jacket, and a solid pair of shoes. You approach the lush forest, knowing you must keep an eye out for the smallest beings along the path. You’ll stumble upon insects, skittering on 6 legs beneath your feet. A few are gastropods, iridescent slime trailing their movements. Others are venomous, their bite inducing a hallucinogenic state. And some are unlike any beast you’ve read about in books. As you wander, you’ll need to leave a trail of breadcrumbs behind you so you can find your way back to the start. But know that once you encounter these strange nocturnal creatures, they may not let you leave- at least not as the person you were.”
The zine, “Breadcrumbs” will also be available as a companion to the exhibit.
There will be an artist reception at the gallery on Friday, Nov. 15, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. For more information on the exhibit, visit batesvilleareaartscouncil.org.
