Scots volleyball mounts 2-0 comeback to defeat Mississippi Women’s
COLUMBUS, Miss. — Lyon College volleyball wins three straight sets after trailing 2-0 to complete a dramatic comeback victory against Mississippi University for Women (MUW) on Friday, Oct. 25.
The Scots (15-7, 8-6) fell early in Columbus, dropping the first two sets against an MUW Owls (4-15, 0-11) team that is still seeking their first conference win of the season.
Coach Kortney Cunningham’s squad responded with two emphatic victories in sets three and four, with final scores of 25-19 and 25-11, to the force the match into the fifth set. The Scots rode that momentum into the final set and completed the 2-0 comeback with a final score of 15-10.
Scots defeat Principia 3-1 in men’s soccer
BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College men’s soccer Scots kept their hopes alive for a SLIAC regular season championship by defeating Principia 3-1 on Saturday, Oct. 26, at Huser Field in Batesville.
The Scots (7-5-4, 5-1-2) handed the Panthers (7-4-3, 5-1-2) their first conference loss of the season.
Lyon College scored first when Tomas Biasi headed in a goal in the 20th minute on an assist by Guesavo Giesbrecht. Principia came back in the 46th minute to tie the game, but in the 73rd minute, Erik Oliveira put in a penalty kick to put the Scots up 2-1. Later in the 82nd minute, Tiago Donadon scored on a point-blank shot off an assist from Oliveira for a 3-1 Lyon College lead.
The Scots had eight shots, and seven of those were on-goal. Lucas Crivilatti had an on-goal kick, Oliveira had two shots and scored his on-goal PK, Matheus Nunes had two on-goal kicks and Biasi scored on his only on-goal header, then Donadon had his only on-goal kick score as well.
Lyon College goalkeeper Gabriel Rangel had four saves in the match.
Scots women’s soccer drops 1-0 decision to Principia
BATESVILLE, Arkansas – The Lyon College women’s soccer Scots fell to Principia 1-0 on Saturday, Oct. 26, at Huser Field in Batesville in a SLIAC match.
The Scots (3-9-2, 2-4-1) gave up the only goal of the match in the 54th minute of the second half.
Lyon College had two shots on goal and four shots total in the match. Emily Betzold had a shot on goal and of the three shots that Allison Byars took, one was on-goal.
Principia had 11 shots and six on-goal kicks.
Jessie Stauffer, the goalie for the Scots, had five saves on the day.
Scots men’s golf takes fifth place, Lyon women’s golf finishes seventh at Crusader’s Cup
WESTWORTH VILLAGE, Texas – The Lyon College men’s golf team finished fifth in the Crusader’s Cup hosted by the University of Dallas at Hawks Creek Golf Course in Westworth Village, Texas on Tuesday.
The Scots finished with a two-day total of 614 (301 – 313). Brooks Vangilder led Lyon College with a 77 on Day two of the tournament and had two birdies (holes eight and 18) and parred holes two, three, four, five, 11, 12, 13, 16 and 17.
John Blake Turner finished the second day with a 78. He had birdies on holes four and six, and parred holes five, seven, eight, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17 and 18.
Ryan Kriz shot a 79 in round two and had birdies on holes one and 13. He parred four, five, six, eight, 11, 12, 14, 16 and 18.
Manav Perfecto also shot a 79 on the second day of the tournament. He had a birdie on hole five, and parred holes one, two, three, four, eight, nine, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18.
Michael Winne finished with an 89 on the second day. He had a birdie on hole 12 and parred holes five, seven and eight.

The Lyon College women’s golf team finished seventh with a two day total of 784 (394 and 390).
Emma Johnson shot a 91 on the second day with pars on holes one, 13 and 16. Madison Robb shot a 95, with pars on holes eight, 13 and 15. Jesi Odom shot a 95 as well. She had birdies on holes 12 and 15 and parred holes two and 10. Zoe Anderson shot a 109 and had par on hole 17. Keylee Lyons shot a 129 for the second round.

Scots women’s soccer defeats MUW 1-0
COLUMBUS, Miss. – Hanna Birgisdottir scored the match’s only goal in the 83rd minute to lift the Lyon College women’s soccer Scots over host Mississippi University for Women 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Roger Short Soccer Complex in Columbus, Miss.
The Scots (4-9-2, 3-4-1) had seven on-goal shots and 12 shots in all. Birgisdottir goal came on an assist from Zoe Papazoglou with 83:37 showing on the clock.
Jessica Steele had two shots and one on-goal, Papazoglou had three shots and one on-goal, Allison Byars had five shots and three on-goal kicks and Nataly Furne had one on-goal shot.
Lyon goalie Sydney Wolf had two saves in the match.
With the win, the end comes to the SLIAC regular season for the Scots. Now they await a possible bid to go to the USCAA National Championship tournament next Wednesday.
Scots win share of SLIAC regular season championship with 8-0 win at MUW
COLUMBUS, Miss. – Matheus Nunes and Ryan Jenkins both had two goals each to lead the Lyon College men’s soccer Scots over Mississippi University for Women 8-0 on Wednesday night as they claimed a share of the regular season SLIAC championship.
The Scots (8-5-4, 6-1-2) won their second straight regular season title, this one is shared with Greenville, who they tied 1-1 last week in Batesville.
Lyon College got on the board in the 11th minute of the match when Nunes kicked in his first goal. Jenkins added a goal that was assisted by Nunes in the 23rd minute to lead the Scots to a 2-0 halftime lead.
Jenkins scored again in the 56th minute on an assist by Erik Oliveira and two minutes later, Gustavo Giesbrecht scored a goal on an assist from Luca Cirigliano. Ariel Reyes scored on an another assist by Oliveira in the 77th minute and Nunes added his second goal of the night in the 81st minute on an assist by Reyes. Oliveira scored a goal on an another assist by Nunes and Frederico Riberio put in the Scots final goal just before time elapsed to make it 8-0.
Lyon College had 14 on-goal shots and 23 shots total.
Jenkins had two on-goal shots, Oliveria had three shots and two of those were on-goal. Nunes had six total shots and four were on-goal. Giesbrecht had three shots and two on-goal. Tiago Donadon had one shot, Cirigliano had two shots on-goal. Micah Rangel had one shot, Traviss Ragan took one shot, Reyes had two shots and one was on-goal, Jake McMurdo had a shot and Ribeiro had one shot on-goal.
Scots’ goalies Adryan Ledezma and Henrique Megale had one save combined on the night.
With the regular-season co-championship, Lyon College will await a possible bid to the USCAA National Championship next Wednesday.
