Lyon College held a Veterans Day ceremony on campus Monday, honoring veterans and active military members in a tribute attended by students, faculty, and local residents.
The observance began with an in-memoriam video honoring veterans from Independence County who died over the past year, followed by remarks from Larron McClure of Willis Funeral Service.
Military Science instructor Jerry Bowling spoke on the importance of recognizing veterans’ sacrifices, while James Bell, director of the Lyon College Pipe Band, played “Scotland the Brave” during the opening processional.

The Lyon College ROTC, led by Bowling, presented the colors, followed by a solo performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by senior Lillie Hall. Rev. Maggie Alsup, a 2011 alumna and college chaplain, gave the invocation.
Lyon College President Dr. Melissa P. Taverner welcomed attendees, expressing gratitude for veterans’ service. Retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Robert Carius delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the importance of peace.
The ceremony included a presentation on the POW/MIA table by Bowling and the ROTC, detailing its symbolism in honoring prisoners of war and those missing in action. Bowling offered closing remarks, and Chaplain Alsup concluded with a benediction.
The annual event at Lyon College is a tradition that honors the commitment of veterans and active military members.
