Scots volleyball falls to Shaw 3-0 to open pool play at the USCAA Tournament

UNIONTOWN, Penn. — Lyon College volleyball fell to Shaw University to open pool play at the USCAA Division I Volleyball Championships on Thursday, Nov. 7.

The Scots (18-8) lost the match against the Bears (24-4) in straight sets, with final scores of 14-25, 14-25, and 22-25.

The Scots’ statistical leaders included Keeley Beary, who led the team in kills (8), Madeline Hopson, who led in assists (13), and Kylee Sabella, who led the team in digs (8). Beary, Mikhayla Wright, and Cristen Cleveland each had one block, and both Hopson and Sabella had an ace.

Scots volleyball mounts 2-1 comeback against #1 FNU to march into USCAA National Championship Match

UNIONTOWN, Penn. — Lyon College volleyball knocked off the #1-seed Florida National University to advance to the USCAA National Championship Match on Friday. Nov. 8.

Lyon College (20-8) fell 2-1 in the first three sets, scoring 25-23, 16-25, and 19-25. The Scots stormed back to win the last two sets,with an emphatic 25-15 victory in set four to force the match into the fifth set. They had full control of the final set from the jump, winning 15-11 and claiming their second consecutive berth into the USCAA Championship Match by a final score of 3-2.

It was a full team effort for Lyon College, as three players reached double-digit kills, including the USCAA Player of the Year in Kylee Sabella who led the Scots with 16. It was also a remarkable performance from the setters, including freshman Camryn Dawley who set a new single-game high with 28 assists. The junior setter Madeline Hopson wasn’t too far behind, as she garnered 26 assists of her own. Freshman defensive specialist Kinley Vanmeter led the way with 20 digs for the Scots and Cristen Cleveland led with three aces.

Scots volleyball ends 2024 season as USCAA National runner-ups

UNIONTOWN, Penn. — Lyon College volleyball ended the 2024 season on Saturday, Nov. 9, with a second consecutive USCAA National runner-up finish.

The Scots took on Shaw University in the USCAA National Championship match, and fell 3-0 to finish their tournament with a record of 2-2, with both losses coming from Shaw.

Statistical leaders for the Scots in the National Championship match included Kylee Sabella with eight kills, Madeline Hopson with 13 assists, and Cristen Cleveland with eight digs. Sabella tied with Mikhayla Wright in total blocks with three each, and Cleveland tied with Camryn Dawley with each garnering one ace.

The 2024 Lyon College volleyball team finished their season with a 20-9 record, including a 10-6 record in SLIAC conference play. The Scots reached the 20-win mark for the first time in the Coach Kortney Cunningham era, and is the first time Scots volleyball has reached that mark since the 2019 season.

Scots drop 28-0 decision to McMurry on rainy Saturday

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The McMurry War Eagles scored 21 points in the first quarter and went on to defeat the Lyon College Scots 28-0 in SCAC play at Pioneer Stadium on a rainy Saturday, Nov. 9.

The first series of the game saw Lyon’s Quatavious Gatewood intercept a McMurry pass in the endzone. McMurry came back later in the quarter to take a 7-0 lead at the 4:12 mark.
Then a muffed punt that was recovered by the War Hawks led to a 14-0 lead with 1:03 to play in the first quarter. The Scots forced McMurry to turn the ball over one downs midway through the second quarter, but a punt ended the drive four plays later. McMurry scored with 1:50 left on the first half clock to go up by three touchdowns.
An interception by the War Hawks was returned 36 yards for a touchdown with 11:14 left in the game.

Individually, the Scots used three quarterbacks, Joe Galay, Bryton Usrey and Bryan Gonzalez. Usrey led the group with 4-for-11 passing for 26 yards. On the ground, Jaylin Babers led the rushing attack for Lyon College with 21 runs for 149 yards. Cedric Allen led the receivers with one catch for 11 yards. Xavier Long had two catches for 10 yards and Reggie Brown caught one pass for eight yards.

Defensively, Mason Davis had 12 tackles and one sack, Keidrick Wooten had eight tackles, 3.5 TFLs and a half of a sack with Nate Sarver. Slayton Wheeler had a sack as well to go with six tackles.

On special teams, Jesus Romero-Castillo had six punts for 283 yards, which was a 47.2 average.

The Scots (1-8, 0-7) end their regular season and their first year in the SCAC at Austin College Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

McCullough, Toney lead Scots past University of Dallas Crusaders 82-76

BATESVILLE, Ark. – Kylon McCullough scored 29 points, Frank Toney added 28 points and Trenton Bells scored 11 points to lead the Lyon College Scots to an 82-76 win in the season-opener against the University of Dallas Crusaders at Becknell gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 9.

The Scots (1-0) trailed 38-33 at halftime and fell behind 60-49 in the second half, but mounted a comeback with scoring from McCullough and Toney. Kennedy Warren made a three-pointer with 2:33 left in the game to give Lyon College a 74-72 lead. From there, Jarron Harriott put in a layup, McCullough scored and McCullough closed out the game with four straight free throws.

Toney also had eight assist, Malik Madison pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, Colbie West added six boards and Harriott had five rebounds.

McCullough was 9-of-10 from the free throw line and had six steals. Toney had five steals and Madison had six blocked shots in the contest.

The Scots (1-0) will host Hendrix College tomorrow.

Scots women break the century mark in season-opener 104-78 over Dallas University

BATESVILLE, Ark. – Natayla Kaza scored 21 points, Savanna Lopez hit for 18 points, Samantha Taylor added 14 points, while Dalye Hambelton and Molly Mason both had 11 points in a 104-78 win over the Dallas Crusaders on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Becknell Gymansium.

Kaza had eight rebounds and four assist to go with her team-high 21 points. Lopez had seven rebounds and Four assists, Hambelton had seven assists, Mason had eight rebounds and Taylor had 10 assists to hit for a double-double.
Savannah Stout had nine points, Alexis Shelton scored five points, Emily Wally had five points, Haven Cooper scored two baskets, Mia Winston scored four points and Olivia Jones added two points.

The Scots (1-0) were 41-of-80 on field goals and made nine of 27 three pointers.
Lyon College led 28-19 after the first quarter and increased it a 58-38 lead by halftime. In the third quarter, Dallas outscored the Scots 21-19, but the Scots had a 30-point fourth quarter to make it over the century mark in scoring.

Lopez had seven blocked shots and six steals, Hambelton had seven assists and six steals.

Women’s cross country finishes fourth; Men place fifth at USCAA National Championships

LEMONT FURNACE, Penn. — Lyon College men’s and women’s cross country competed at the USCAA National Championships on Sunday morning.

The Scots women’s team started up at 9:00 AM CT in the 6K Run. All six runners for the Scots finished the run, with two finishing in the top 25 in a pool of 69 runners. The women finished fourth out of seven teams.

Madison DeRoussel finished 19th overall, the highest finish for the Scots, with a time of 26:59.60. Olivia Letkey also had a top-25 finish (23rd overall) with a time of 27:26.70. Joanna Wilson finished 33rd with a time of 29:00:00, Alora Huver finished 37th with a time of 29:34.80, Novalee Lackey finished 41st with a time of 30:18.70, and Brianna Krantz finished 48th with a time of 32:19.40.

The Scots men’s team started up at 10:00 AM CT in the 8K Run. The Scots had also had six finishers, with four finishing in the top 50 in a pool of 82 runners. The men finished fifth out of eight teams.

James McNew finished 15th overall, the highest finish for the Scots, with a time of 30:10.60. Daniel Thomas finished 39th overall with a time of 33:24.40, Noah Cordes finished 40th with a time of 33:25.10, Gavin Bush finished 42nd with a time of 33:32.60, Timothy Brady finished 51st with a time of 34:51.80, and Collin Orvin finished 66th overall with a time of 36:37.20.

Lyon College men’s and women’s wrestling return from Carl Albert State Viking Open

POTEAU, Okla. — Lyon College men’s and women’s wrestling competed at their season opener meets at the Carl Albert State College Viking Open.

Both the men’s and women’s teams competed against a vast array of opponents from NJCAA all the way up to NCAA Division I programs.

The Scots men’s team began their competition on Saturday, Nov. 9, during an action-packed day in Lyon Athletics.
Ty Ferguson had a great showing, finishing the day 3-2 and with 21 total match points. Liam Selhorst finished 1-2 with 23 total match points, Eli Lupton finished 1-2 with six total match points, Clay Queen Jr. finished 1-2 with four total match points, and Shmuel “Sam” Tabak finished 0-2 with five total match points.

The Scots women’s team began their competition on Sunday, Nov. 10 in Poteau.

Rubi Gonzalez was the lone competitor for the women at the meet, finishing 0-2 on the day with three total match points.

Taylor scores 31 points; Kaza hits game-winning three-point play to lead Scots past Hendrix 79-76

CONWAY – Samantha Taylor scored 31 points in just 32 minutes of play to lead the Lyon College Scots past the Hendrix College Warriors 79-76 on Tuesday night in Conway.

Taylor put in a short jumper with 1:08 to go in the game to put the Scots (2-0) up 76-74, but after Hendrix tied the game, Natayla Kaza, who had 20 points for Lyon College, made a game-winning three-point play with 32 seconds left to seal the win.

The Scots led 20-15 after the first quarter and held on to a slim 35-34 lead by halftime despite being in foul trouble. Dayle Hambleton, Haven Cooper, Alexis Shelton and Savanna Lopez combined to lead Lyon College to a 57-56 lead before Taylor was fouled in the final second and sank three free throws to push the lead to four points with no time on the clock.

Taylor made 11-of-20 field goals, hit 2-of-4 three-pointers and was 7-of-8 from the free throw line to go with six rebounds, five assists and five steals. She played the entire fourth quarter with four personal fouls.

Kaza was 7-of-16 from the field, made 3-of-7 three-pointers and was perfect from the free throw line on three attempts.

Hambleton scored eight points and led the Scots with eight rebounds. Shelton scored eight points and was 2-of-4 on three-pointers to go with three assists. Lopez added seven points and hauled down six rebounds, while Cooper put in five points, including a momentum-shifting basket in the fourth quarter, and had five rebounds.

There were 17 lead changes in the game and it was tied 10 times.
The Scots scored 26 points in the paint, had 27 points off of 27 Hendrix turnovers, scored 13 second-chance points, had 26 fast-break points and got 36 points from non-starters.

The Lyon College women will be in action again on Saturday afternoon against Austin College in the annual Furry Frenzy Toy Toss game beginning at 1 p.m. at Becknell Gymnasium.
