United Way of North Central Arkansas will officially close on Dec. 31, 2024, after more than four decades of supporting nonprofit organizations in the region.

According to a press release, changes in charitable giving trends and challenges in maintaining a working volunteer board prompted the decision.

“For 42 years, United Way of North Central Arkansas has proudly worked alongside our remarkable partner agencies to uplift individuals and families, provide critical resources, and foster hope,” said John Kunkel, president of the organization. “Unfortunately, today’s evolving philanthropic environment and the growing difficulty of managing a working board have made it unsustainable for us to continue operating.”

United Way has faced declining donations as many donors choose to contribute directly to causes they support. Economic pressures have also reduced the capacity of some donors to give. At the same time, the organization struggled to recruit and retain board members for its volunteer-driven leadership model.

While the organization highlighted recent successes, such as November’s “Night of Impact” event, leaders said those efforts were not enough to sustain operations.

The remaining funds will be distributed to partner agencies to ensure their work continues. Kunkel encouraged individuals and businesses to support these agencies directly, emphasizing that doing so would direct all contributions to specific programs and initiatives.

“To our nonprofit partners, your tireless dedication has inspired us every step of the way. Your work has transformed lives, and we encourage businesses and individuals to support your missions directly,” Kunkel said.

United Way thanked donors, volunteers, and community members for their contributions over the years.

“While this chapter is closing, the legacy of what we have built together will endure,” Kunkel said. “Your generosity and compassion have made an indelible mark on our community.”
