Scots defeat Hendrix College in Conway 77-60

CONWAY, Arkansas – Kylon McCullough scored 18 points and had nine rebounds, Colbie West had 16 points and eight boards, and Frank Toney scored 13 points with six rebounds to lead the Lyon College Scots past the Hendrix Warriors 77-60 on Dec. 19 at Grove Gymnasium in Conway.

The Scots (5-5) led 38-20 at halftime after a 25-2 run early in the first half put space between them and the Warriors, who jumped out to a 10-2 lead. Kennedy Warren had four points, Malik Madison scored two points and had five blocked shots, Tucker Cunningham came in off the bench for seven points, including two three-pointers. Luke Bridges added four points, Brody Tucker scored four points, Trenton Bell knocked down a three-pointer, Jackson Midyett had three points, Jonzelle Bush scored two and John Paul Morgan made a free throw in the contest.

Lyon College shot 47 percent from the field and hit 8-of-20 three-pointers in the game. The Scots were also 11-of-17 from the free throw line and scored 36 points in the paint. They had 12 points come off of 14 Hendrix turnovers, had 17 second-chance points and 17 fast-break points. The bench for Lyon College accounted for a season-high 24 points.

The lead changed hands one time in the game when the Scots took a 11-10 lead on a West three-pointer after the Warriors jumped out to a quick 10-point lead. Lyon College never trailed after that point.

The Scots will return home to Becknell Gymnasium on Jan. 4 for a SLIAC contest against Mississippi University for Women at 3 p.m.

Scots women’s basketball loses at Crowley’s Ridge 106-75

PARAGOULD, Ark. – The Crowley’s Ridge Pioneers defeated the Lyon College Scots women’s basketball team 106-75 on Dec. 10 at the Carter Activities Center in Paragould.

The Scots (4-6) trailed 27-15 after the first quarter and fell behind 48-30 at halftime. Crowley’s Ridge outscored Lyon College 29-24 in the third quarter and 29-21 in the fourth period.

The Scots were led by Samantha Taylor with 15 points and four steals. Natalya Kaza scored 13 points and Emily Walley scored 11 points. Others to score for Lyon College included seven points and seven rebounds for Savanna Lopez, Jewel Walley had eight points, Molly Mason scored four points and had 11 rebounds, Alexis Shelton scored two points, Olivia Jones had five points, Mia Winston and Izabel Soto both had three points each, while Savannah Stout and Chasity Taylor scored one point each.

Lyon College shot 29.2 percent from the field made 9-of-32 three-pointers for 28 percent and hit 10-of-15 free throws. The Scots were out rebounded 58 to 43, while Crowley’s Ridge shot 49 percent. and made 15-of-35 three-pointers.

The Scots trailed by as much as 35 points in the game.

Scots drop 99-94 overtime game to Huntingdon College at home

BATESVILLE, Arkansas – Frank Toney scored 34 points and Kylon McCullough added 22 points in a 99-94 overtime loss at Becknell Gymnasium against Huntingdon College on Monday afternoon.

The Scots (4-5) fought back from a 20-points down to tie the game at 86-86 on a shot that was dubbed a two-pointer from the three-point line. In overtime, Huntingdon College managed to hit free throws and outscore Lyon College 13-8 for the win.

Along with 34 points, Toney had 10 rebounds and seven assists for a double-double. Malik Madison had 12 points and three blocked shots and Colbie West scored 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Scots trailed at halftime 45-36 and fell behind 70-48 with 12 minutes remaining, but fought back behind two free throws from Frank Toney and who followed that with a three-pointer. Toney put in two straight layups and West added two free throws to complete a 10-0 run by Lyon College.

West made a three-pointer, Toney made two free throws and put in a layup, then McCullough hit a jumper on the fast-break to make it a 74-67 game with 6:10 to go.

Trent Bell made a three-pointer for the Scots and Toney put in another driving layup and Madison hit a short jumper inside to cut the Huntingdon lead to four points with 3:26 left in regulation.

Seconds later, McCullough added a layup and Madison put in a shot to make it a 2-point game with 1:34 to play.

Huntingdon went up 86-81 with 34 seconds left following a McCullough three-pointer, but West knocked down a three-pointer and Toney knocked down a corner shot with two seconds to play to tie the game at 86-86

Free throws for Huntingdon were the difference the game in overtime.

Milligan reaches championship bout; results from North Central Women’s Open

NAPERVILLE, Illinois — Lyon College women’s wrestling is heading back home from the 2024 North Central Women’s Open.

The Scots finished their day of positioned in 30th place out of 44 teams, scoring a 20 team points and finishing a collective 4-7 on the day.

Sidney Milligan competed in the 160 class in Group B, where she blazed her way into the championship bout, collecting two of her three victories via pin fall. Milligan opened her run with a victory against Maddie Hall of the University of Wisconson-Stevens Point in the opening round, advancing to the quarterfinals where she earned a 4-3 decision win over Fabiana Josa of New Jersey City University.

In the semifinals, Milligan defeated Katt Mossinghoff of Lindenwood University, securing her spot in the championship bout where she eventually fell to Ruby Rios of McKendree University via pin fall.

In total, Milligan placed second in her weight class, finishing 3-1 on the day and garnering 18 points.

Mikayla Wallace competed in the 138 class in Group A, where she fell in the opening round to Madeline Barton of Quincy University. Wallace later picked up a victory in the consolation bracket, winning via tech fall over Emma Donovan of Grand Valley State University. Wallace finished 1-2 overall on the day, picking up two points.

Rubi Gonzalez competed in the 110 class, where she finished 0-2 on the day, barely falling in her opening match via an 11-10 decision against Veronica Cosio of Elmhurst University.

D’Mysha James made her collegiate debut at the North Central Women’s open, competing in the 180 class where she finished 0-2 on the day in her matches against Ruby Joseph of Northern Michigan University and Madisyn Crawford of Quincy University.

The Scots will return to action on Jan. 11 when they host Texas Women’s University for a dual inside the Garner Recreation Center at Becknell Gymnasium in Batesville.
