Scots men’s wrestling finishes 16th at Huntingdon College Hawk Classic
MONTGOMERY, Alabama — Lyon College men’s wrestling returned home from 2025 Huntingdon College Hawk Classic in early January.
The Scots sent three wrestlers Montgomery, as Ty Ferguson, Liam Selhorst, and Shmuel “Sam” Tabak all competed at the Hawk Classic.
Ferguson finished the day 3-2, dropping his opening match to Chase Ayers of Lindsey Wilson College via fall at the 2:26 mark. Ferguson then blazed through the consolation bracket, picking up three consecutive pin fall victories against Logan Gould of Wisconsin University-Stephens Point, Benjamin Dyer of Lindsey Wilson College, and finally against Austin Gray of Wisconsin University-Stephens Point. Ferguson’s bracket run came to an end in the quarterfinals against Daniel McEntire of Montevallo University via a 10-3 decision.
Selhorst finished the day 0-2 after receiving a first-round bye. His two losses were both via narrow decisions, as he fell to Dalton Wainwright of Montevallo University via a 4-0 decision and to Micah Wood of Huntingdon College via a 6-5 decision.
Tabak also finished the day 0-2. His opening match was against Chad Strickland of Montevallo University, where he lost via fall at the 2:56 mark. In the consolation bracket, Tabak received the first-round bye and eventually fell to Julian Anthony of Andrew College.
“We made a lot of improvements” said Lyon College Head Men’s Wrestling Coach Chris Wilmington, “Very proud of these guys for how they competed today.”
McCullough scores 31 to lead Scots past MUW, 69-67
BATESVILLE, Arkansas – Kylon McCullough scored 31 points, Colbie west added 11 and Frank Toney scored 10 points to lead the Lyon College Scots past the visiting MUW Owls in SLIAC action at Becknell Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 4.
The Scots (6-5, 3-1) got nine points and three blocked shots from Malik Madison, six points from Kennedy Warren and a basket from John Paul Morgan in the win over MUW.
Lyon College led by 11 points at halftime, 38-27 thanks to a late layup from McCullough, who hit four three-pointers for 16 points in the first half.
The Scots were up by as much as 18 points in the second stanza when Kennedy hit a shot with 17 minutes to play to make it 47-29. MUW came back to cut the game to one point with eight minutes left, 53-52 and took a brief lead until Toney made four free throws in a row to put Lyon College up 59-56 with 3:33 left.
McCullough hit another three-pointer and Madison put in a free throw, but MUW came back to cut the game to two points with 1:40 to go. Madison got free for a dunk and McCullough put in two more free throws to extend the Scots lead to six points. After a three-pointer by the Owls, Toney made two free throws nine seconds left and MUW hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to make it a two-point win for Lyon College.
Mason seals win for Scots with two free throws in final seconds against MUW
BATESVILLE, Arkansas – Molly Mason made two free throws with four seconds left to seal an 80-76 much needed SLIAC victory for the Lyon College Scots women’s basketball team on Saturday, Jan. 4, at Becknell Gymnasium.
The Scots (5-6, 2-2) led by as much as 16 points in the third quarter, 61-45 on a jumper from Natalya Kaza, but MUW came back to close the gap to one point, 69-68 with 7:39 to go in the game.
Emily Walley made a three-pointer for the Scots and Savanna Lopez scored with three minutes to play to make it 74-70. The Owls closed to within two points at the two and half minute mark, but Mason made two free throws to push the Lyon College advantage back to four points.
MUW scored twice to tie the game at 76-76 with 1:32 to go, then Kaza made was fouled and made two free throws with 1:14 left. The Owls missed two three-pointers in the final minute before Mason sealed the game with two more free throws.
MUW trailed Lyon College 23-22 after the first quarter and fell behind 49-38 by halftime. The Owls outscored the Scots 23-18 in the third quarter, but Lyon College held a 67-61 lead.
Kaza led all scorers with 30 points, five rebounds and five assists. Mason finished with 15 points and Emily Walley had 10 points and six rebounds. Lopez had nine points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots. Dayle Hambelton had seven points, 11 assists and eight rebounds, while Haven Cooper had six points and Alexis Shelton finished with three points.
Lopez, Kaza score 17 each to lead Scots past Fontbonne 91-65
BATESVILLE, Arkansas – Savanna Lopez and Natalya Kaza scored 17 points each to lead the Lyon College Scots women’s basketball team over the visiting Fontbonne Griffins 91-65 on Thursday, Jan. 9, at Becknell Gymnasium.
The Scots (6-6, 3-2) took a 30-15 lead after the first quarter and led 53-29 by halftime. Lyon College led the third quarter 22-15 and added 16 points in the fourth quarter.
Molly Mason had 11 points and Jewel Walley scored 10 to complete the double-digit scoring for the Scots. Haven Cooper scored nine points, Chasity Taylor had seven points, Alexis Shelton scored six points, Savannah Stout scored five, while Emily Walley, Izabel Soto and Olivia Wallace had three points each. Dalye Hambelton led the team in assists with six, while Mason had nine rebounds and Olivia Jones had two rebounds, one assist and one steal.
The Scots started the game shooting 58 percent from the field and finished the game with a 44.2 percent average. They hit 12 of 35 three-pointers and made three of three free throws. Lyon College got 44 points in the paint, scored 21 points off of 13 Fontbonne turnovers, got 18 second chance points, scored 31 points off the fast-break and got 40 points from the bench.
Two free throws from Kaza with 4:25 left in the third quarter, put the Scots up by 40 points, their largest lead in the game 71-31. Lyon College never trailed in the game.
West scores 19, McCullough adds 17 to lead Scots past Fontbonne 93-76
BATESVILLE, Arkansas – Colbie West scored 19 points and Kylon McCullough added 17 points to lead the Lyon College Scots past the Fontbonne Griffins 93-76 on Thursday, Jan. 9, at Becknell Gymnasium.
The Scots (7-5, 4-1) led 43-31 at halftime and outscored the Griffins 50-45 in the second half. Other double-figure scorers included Jonzelle Bush with 12 points and five rebounds, Frank Toney added 11 points and had six assists, and Kennedy Warren scored 10 points on five-of-five shooting from the field. Luke Bridges added eight points, Malik Madison had six points, Jackson Midyett added six points, while Brody Tucker and Isaiah Sweetwine had two points each. John Paul Morgan had six rebounds, while Tucker Cunningham, Trent Bell, Hudson Rogers and Gavin Brunson also contributed to the victory.
Lyon College shot 51.4 percent from the field, made 8-of-21 three-pointers and was 11-for-11 at the free throw line against Fontbonne.
The Scots had 52 points in the paint, scored 14 points off of 10 Griffins turnovers, had nine second chance points, scored 17 points off of the fast-break and got 10 points from the bench.
The game was tied three times and there were two lead changes early in the first half.
A three-point play from Bush with 8:34 left in the game gave the Scots their largest lead at 31 points, 79-48.
Turnovers haunt Lyon College women in 75-69 home loss to Principia
BATESVILLE, Arkansas – Natalya Kaza scored 20 points, Molly Mason added 19 points and 16 rebounds, and Savanna Lopez scored 16 points and had 14 rebounds, but 30 uncharacteristic turnovers cost the Lyon College Scots in a 75-69 home loss to Principia in SLIAC play at Becknell Gymnasium on Jan. 11.
The Scots (6-7, 3-3) also got scoring from Alexis Shelton with seven points, Dalye Hambelton had four points and 10 assists and Haven Cooper had three points and five rebounds. Also playing was Savannah Stout, Jewell Walley and Emily Walley in the contest.
The Scots trailed 25-14 after the first quarter, but battled back to outscore Principia 21-18 in the second period and trailed 43-35 at halftime. Lyon College came back in the third quarter to tie the game at 47-47 at the 5:09 mark on a layup from Kaza. It the scoring of Kaza, Lopez and Mason that put Lyon College on a 10-2 run to tie the game at that time. Principia edged out to another six point lead, but with 2:16 left in the third quarter, Kaza put in another layup to tie the game at 53-53, but the Panthers led 58-53 by the end of the period.
The Scots were down by as much as 11 points in the fourth quarter and fought back on two three-pointers from Mason to close the gap to two points, 71-69 with 2:09 to play. Turnovers and missed shots in the final two minutes forced the Scots to foul and Principia made four straight free throws.
Lyon College shot 36 percent from the field and made 6-of-19 three-pointers and 11-of-17 free throws in the game.
Toney, McCullough score 17 points each to lead Scots over Principia 82-62
BATESVILLE, Arkansas – Frank Toney and Kylon McCullough scored 17 points each to lead Lyon College over visiting Principia 82-62 on Saturday, Jan. 11, at Becknell Gymnasium.
The Scots (8-5, 5-1) opened up a 43-29 halftime lead and led by as much as 32 points, 77-45 in the second half.
Toney also had eight assists, Jonzelle Bush scored 11 points and Luke Bridges added 10 points in the win. Colbie West scored nine points and led Lyon in rebounds with eight. Trent Bell scored eight points, Malik Madison put in six points and four blocked shots, while Kennedy Warren and Jackson Midyett scored two points each. John Paul Morgan had four rebounds, Tucker Cunningham had five assists, Gavin Brunson played seven minutes, Hudson Rogers added a rebound and had a blocked shot, while Brody Tucker and Isaiah Sweetwine played four minutes each in the .
The Scots shot 59 percent from the field and hit 9-of-24 three pointers and made 9-of-11 free throws. Lyon College got 46 points in the paint, scored 24 points off of 12 Principia turnovers, got eight second chance points, scored 35 points off of the fast-break and had 31 bench points.
The game was tied once and the lead changed only one time.
Lyon College trailed by as much as seven points early in the first half, but weathered the Principia storm to fight back and take the lead 18-17 on a three-pointer from Bell. Bush’s three-pointer at the 7:21 mark of the first half made it a 25-19 Scots’ lead. Bridges scored three straight times in the paint and McCullough’s layup with 3:58 to go made it a 33-23 Lyon College lead. McCullough scored a layup, a dunk and a driving shot, the West hit inside twice for a 48-28 lead just before halftime.
Warren started the second half for the Scots with two free throws, then Toney hit a layup off the fast-break, then made a three-pointer. McCullough put in a three-pointer and Madison made two free throws. McCullough completed a three-point play and West scored again inside to make it 60-35 with 15:29 left in the game.
Bush made a layup, Toney hit another three-pointer and put in a layup, then McCullough made a three-pointer and Bridges hit inside for a 30-point Scots’ lead with 11:17 to go, 72-42.
Bell’s three-pointer at the 8:39 mark made for a 32-point lead, 77-45.
Scots women’s basketball loses to Eureka 91-67
BATESVILLE, Arkansas – The Eureka Red Devils took advantage of 36 Lyon College Scots turnovers to win at Becknell Gymnasium 91-67 on Thursday night in SLIAC women’s basketball action.
The Scots (6-8, 3-4) started the game with seven straight turnovers and fell behind 13-0 to Eureka. The Scots came back to trail 24-18 by the end of the first period and managed to come back and take a 29-28 lead on a free throw from Dalye Hambleton with 6:22 to go before halftime. Eureka scored eight straight points and led 49-35 by halftime.
The Scots were outscored 22-21 in the third quarter and 20-11 in the fourth period.
Savanna Lopez led Lyon College with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Natalya Kaza added 16 points. Dalye Hambelton and Emily Wallace had six points each. Molly Mason, Chasity Taylor, and Olivia Jones had four points each, Alexis SHelton had three points, while Haven Cooper and Savannah South added two points each. Jewel Walley, Izabel Soto and Olivia Wallace also played in the game, but did not score.
Lyon College had 17 first half turnovers and doubled it to 34 for the game. The Scots shot 41.7 percent from the field, made 3 of 11 three-pointers and 14 of 16 free throws.
Lyon College hosts Blackburn on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
McCullough, Toney lead Scots past Eureka 80-69
BATESVILLE, Arkansas – Kylon McCullough scored 25 points to go with 11 rebounds and Frank Toney added 23 to lead the Lyon College Scots past the Eureka Red Devils 80-69 on Thursday night at Becknell Gymnasium.
The Scots (9-5, 4-1) trailed 35-32 at halftime, but outscored Eureka 48-34 in the second half to take the win by 11 points. Colbie West added 10 points, Jonzelle Bush added eight points, John Paul Morgan had six points and eight rebounds, Malik Madison had four points and four blocked shots and Kennedy Warren added four points. Trent Bell, Tucker Cunningham and Luke Bridges also played key minutes in the game, but did not score.
Lyon shot 41.3 percent from the field, hit 6 of 20 three-pointers and made 12 of 14 free throws in the SLIAC victory. The Scots got 38 points in the paint, scored 21 points off of 11 Eureka turnovers, had 13 second-chance points, 30 fast-break points, got 14 points from the bench and the score was tied twice, with four lead changes.
The Scots trailed early in the first half and got as close as one point five different times with the last being 29-28 with 3:11 to go in the first half on two free throws by Toney.
McCullough hit a shot to start the second half and West made a three-pointer to tie the game at 37-37 with 18:49 to play. McCullough made a layup to put Lyon College in front and added another. Toney scored on a layup to make it 43-37. The Scots never trailed after that point.
A three-pointer from McCullough made it a 12 point Lyon College lead, 57-45 with 11:45 to go. A few seconds later, Morgan scored inside and Toney hit a jumper for a 61-48 advantage. Scores from Morgan, Toney and a three-pointer from McCullough made for a 19-point Scots’ lead with 4:16 to go.
Lyon College play at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Becknell Gymnasium against the Blackburn Beavers.
