Scots run past Blackburn 84-53

Kylon McCullough scored 16 points, Frank Toney had 13 points, and Mailk Madison added 12 to lead the Lyon College Scots past the Blackburn Beavers 84-53 on Saturday afternoon in SLIAC men’s basketball action at Becknell Gymnasium.

The Scots (10-5, 7-1) also got seven points from Colbie West, five points each from Jonzelle Bush and Trent Bell, four points from Kennedy Warren, Tucker Cunningham, and Gavin Brunson, while Jackson Midyett and Brody Tucker had three points each. John Paul Morgan had two points and six rebounds, Luke Bridges had two points, Hudson Rogers scored his first two points as a Lyon College Scot, and Isaiah Sweetwine scored a basket in the win.

Lyon College scored 38 points in the paint, had 17 points off of 14 Blackburn turnovers, had 10 second chance points, got nine points off of fast-breaks, and had 32 points come from the bench players. The Scots shot 58.2 percent from the field in the game and hit 10-of-20 three-pointers.

Lyon led 42-20 after the first half and outscored the Beavers 42-33 in the second stanza to take the victory.

Toney started off the scoring in the game with two jumpers and assisted West on a three-pointer. Warren drove the lane for a layup, McCullough hit a three-pointer, and West put in a layup for a quick 10-point Scots’ lead. McCullough added a basket, Toney hit a three-pointer, and Madison slammed in a dunk. Madison made another short hook shot, and Bush put in a layup for a 25-9 Lyon College lead with 11:47 to go in the first half.

Madison scored again in the paint, then Cunningham knocked down a three-pointer. Bush came back to make two free throws, and Bridges put in a swirling layup for a 34-14 Lyon College lead with 6:48 to go in the first half.

Toney made a free throw, then hit a three-pointer and a layup in succession before West scored to end the first half with Lyon College ahead by 22 points.

Madison started off the second half scoring with a dunk on an alley-oop assist from Toney. McCullough hit a three-pointer and made a jump shot before Madison scored again inside and had another dunk to make it 53-29 Lyon College with 16:17 left in the game.

McCullough scored on a layup and hit a three-pointer and made a free throw for a 28-point lead for the Scots at the 12:48 mark. Bell made a three-pointer, Morgan made two free throws, Bell had a dunk and Bush made a free throw. Cunningham added a free throw, Brunson made two at the free throw line and Rogers put in a layup with 3:50 to go to make it 72-46. Warren scored on a jump shot, Tucker made a three-pointer, Sweetwine hit a shot in the lane and Midyett made a three-pointer with 1:25 to go to put the Scots up 82-50. Brunson finished out the scoring with a field goal with 17 seconds left.

The Scots will be on the road Thursday and Saturday at Spalding and Greenville in SLIAC men’s basketball action. Currently, Lyon College is tied for the conference lead with only one loss.
