No. 22 East Texas Baptist University sweeps Lyon College baseball

BATESVILLE, Ark. — The Lyon College Scots fell to No. 22 East Texas Baptist University, dropping both games of Saturday’s doubleheader 15-2 and 8-0 at Fred Wann Field.

In the opener, the Scots briefly tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first when Kooper McCoy doubled and later scored on Ashton Compton’s groundout. The Tigers responded with single runs in the second and third innings before adding three in the fourth and blowing the game open with an eight-run seventh that included two home runs.

Tyler Mohr singled and scored on Braden Bramlett’s groundout for Lyon’s second run. The Scots managed just four hits — singles by Landon Swallow, Mohr and Braden Hendrix, plus McCoy’s double.

Blair Francis (4.1 innings, six runs, four earned) took the loss. Tyler Campbell allowed five runs in two innings, and Carter Sprague surrendered four runs while recording just one out before Will Colton finished the seventh.

ETBU jumped to a 5-0 lead after two innings in the nightcap and added three more runs to complete the sweep. Swallow’s two singles accounted for Lyon’s only hits as Scots batters struck out 13 times.

Aiden Connolly started and allowed three runs on one hit with two walks. Alex Marsh pitched 4.2 innings, giving up four runs, followed by Taylor Connor (2.2 innings, one run) and Nick Dennington (1.2 scoreless innings).

Scots drop 9-5 decision to ETBU in series finale

No. 22 East Texas Baptist escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning and pulled away for a 9-5 victory over Lyon College in Sunday’s series finale at Fred Wann Field.

The Scots (8-8) threatened to complete a comeback when trailing 6-5 in the eighth with the bases loaded, but ETBU’s shortstop made a diving stop on Kooper McCoy’s hard grounder and forced the runner at second to end the threat.

The Tigers then added three insurance runs in the ninth to secure the win.

Lyon opened the scoring in the second inning when Walker Smith’s sacrifice fly brought home Eli Marcotte. ETBU responded with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before erupting for four runs in the sixth to build a 6-1 lead.

Marcotte tripled down the right field line in the sixth to score McCoy, cutting the deficit to 6-2. The Scots rallied for three more runs in the seventh on Ashton Compton’s bases-loaded walk and Slade Inman’s two-run single to left field.

In the pivotal eighth, Braden Hendrix led off with an infield single and Smith was hit by a pitch. After Andrew James struck out on a passed ball that allowed both runners to advance, Misael Santiago popped up a bunt attempt. Logan Swallow was then hit by a pitch to load the bases before McCoy’s sharp grounder was snared for the inning-ending force play.
