Kris Sweet, the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the Lyon College football program in Batesville, was overwhelmed from the public’s response after his players performed an act of kindness and support for him.

Sweet is undergoing treatment for B-cell, Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and some treatment can result in the loss of hair.

Showing their support for Coach Sweet and his health struggle, several Lyon players shaved their heads Monday evening and posted it on social media. Once that became public through Twitter and other means, the response was overwhelming.

In a news conference at Lyon College on Wednesday afternoon, Coach Sweet (pictured above, with Lyon College’s Madeline Pyle) was asked if that act by the players has renewed or enhanced his faith in the younger generation.

“Yes. I have two kids of my own, and my two girls have probably taught me more than I’ll ever teach them,” Sweet said yesterday. “You learn from them. If nothing else, it gives people my age, (from) my generation, maybe a little more confidence and faith in the younger generation…There’s compassion. There’s humility. And there’s a care there. A lot of kids in this generation don’t see anything past themselves. For them to do that, it’s pretty impressive.”

Sweet, who joined the Scots in March, came to campus with an extensive background in coaching at both the collegiate and professional levels.
