A regulating ordinance affecting log-hauling trucks is on the Independence County Quorum Court agenda for its Sept. 9 meeting.
The ordinance says since log trucks use county roads in a random manner compared to other heavy hauling trucks — such as those hauling farm crops, chicken house feed, and live haul loads — that there is then a need to determine the best routes for logging activities using county roads.
The ordinance says log trucks shall obtain a permit from the county road department before logging activities commence. The permit will spell out each property logged and contain the name and legal description of the property. The permit shall also have the logging route noted upon it.
The permit will cost $5, and a copy shall be present in any and all trucks hauling logs.
The ordinance goes on to say that any hauler found to be in violation of the ordinance shall be subject to a $1,000 fine upon the first violation. Subsequent violations shall be doubled.
The ordinance also states it contains nothing to prohibit or limit the right of the county judge to require a road bond for such activities in addition to the terms of the ordinance.
The ordinance will be presented to the full quorum court by Brent Henderson, the chairman of the road committee.
The court meets in Batesville at the Jess B. Carpenter Building Monday at 6 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.
