At last night’s Southside City Council meeting, James Blaxton with the U.S. Census Bureau made a presentation about the census count. He told the council each person in the United States with a physical mailing address will receive a postcard containing instructions on how to complete census information.
In order for the census to have an accurate count, it is necessary for enumerators to go door-to-door to count every person possible. Blaxton said only 69 percent of the population self-responded in the last census. The rest were counted door-to-door by enumerators. The hope for this census is for participation to increase to the 80th percentile.
This year, the census can be completed in multiple ways. Census submissions can be completed over the phone, online, or by mail. Then, Blaxton said the door-to-door count starts, probably in the summer of 2020.
Blaxton told the council said the census is not political. It is just for getting a headcount of the country’s population, adding that the census survey does not ask for personal information, such as social security numbers.
