Authorities say a 63-year-old man was caught south of the power plant near Newark Tuesday with marijuana, meth, and narcotics.
According to court information filed in Independence County Circuit Court, the arrest affidavit reports Arkansas State Police Cpl. Jeremy Hughes was on patrol when the front radar in his patrol unit pegged a northbound Chevrolet Uplander traveling at 67 mph in a 55 mph zone on Highway 69.
After stopping the vehicle, Hughes said he noticed an odor of marijuana coming from inside the Uplander. A probable cause search found marijuana, meth, as well as Schedule IV narcotics, the affidavit said.
The driver and only occupant of the vehicle, identified in the affidavit as Thomas E. Layton, Jr., 63, was taken to the Independence County Jail where a search of Layton found one additional clear plastic baggie of a green vegetable material that tested positive as marijuana.
Layton, Jr., has been charged with furnishing, possessing or using prohibited articles; possession of methamphetamine; possession of drug paraphernalia to ingest meth; possession of drug paraphernalia to conceal meth; possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance, such as Xanax and Klonopin; and possession of marijuana, a Schedule VI controlled substance.
He was placed in jail on a $50,000 bond.
